Market Friday - Have you been in the Public Market? What do you expect to see?

Happy Friday and Happy Holiday!, Yes, today is a holiday also in my country in observance of Eid al-Fitr. We have Muslim countrymen in some parts of the Philippines, specifically in the Mindanao area; thus, it was declared a regular Holiday. That means, even though we don't work today, employers are required to pay 100%; if we work, then it is doubled, 200%. However, our company didn't require us to work today, so I was on Holiday! A long weekend for me 😁.

With that, I've been slacking around the whole day and enough time to write ✍️✍️.

Let me share my recent market experience, not in the malls but in a literal public market.

I had been thinking of visiting the market as the prices in [Talipapa] near our dorm was quite expensive. Though I understand that prices would vary as it was not the primary market, still there are times I felt like it was overpricing. Could I be just wrong or I am no longer visiting public markets, so might the price in my head was no longer updated?

It was the weekend and a little late already, so I was expecting a crowd.
Before entering the market, you can find some sidewalk vendors selling merchandise.

Due to the crowd, this is what I captured. Remember those days buying face masks was a challenge? Now it was sold for $0.27 for two packs. Each pack contains ten pcs.

I wanted to buy some fruits and to check if we have some raspberries sold.

Summer is already here, and so the season of watermelons. Among all fruits, this is one that I love to eat, but I refrain from purchasing. Why? It is heavy 🤣. My back aches if I carry too much weight.

This is what our public market looks like; some merchandise is stored on the floor. Ahmm, don't worry, there was usually a cartoon or anything placed beneath the fruits. It doesn't directly touch the floor.

The fruit section was vast, and there were several stalls. At first, I was eyeing to buy an avocado, but when I asked, per kilo cost $4.80; expensive! Well, it was not yet the season, but if it is? The price will drop to $2.68.

I bought grapes, a piece of apple, and pears for a while. See @tengolotodo ? No raspberries! So I really have yet to taste one!

From there I went to check some vegetables! Bought only some saluyot, spinach and a slice of papaya. Veggies couldn't be stored for long, so I got only good for a day or two.

I forgot the prices of my purchases, but from what I remember, I paid around $2.

Time passed, and it was almost noon, a number of buyers somehow lessened, but the temperature rose. It became uncomfortable and humid, so instead of going to the next building to buy fish and meats, I opted to walk straight to the exit. However, I saw a lot of Filipino delicacies displayed! Plus, the seller was convincing to the point that you would end up buying one!

Kutsinta, biko, pichi-pichi, cassava cake, steam rice cakes, bibingka! Name what you are craving, and they had it. Even suman!

I missed eating the bibingka; it was almost the same as a rice cake. The difference was the main ingredient was glutinous rice instead of flour. Also, it was cooked using fire and not steam. It's been years since the last time I tasted one in our province. Without a doubt, I bought one pack for $.0.36!

After, I headed back to go out but remembered again I needed some curtains. Public markets here most of the time the second floor is for dry goods. That includes a lot of RTWs and some home essentials. Some stalls sew and make curtains, depending on your liking, with a touch of personalization. The fabric was almost the same in the malls but cheaper.

If you noticed, the 3rd floor was empty. It's open every scheduled Market day, which is Friday. This is the time; you can buy RTWs in bulk at the lowest price. Ideal for those who are in the buy and sell.

While I was on the stairs, I looked down and couldn't help but appreciate the effort of the local government. That was the beautification. As you can see, they was even a fountain at the center.

Around the fountain, you can find canteens or what we called karinderya in our language. That explains why there were a lot of tables. Most of the workers here opted to eat, and even some buyers. Others may say they don't like it because it's dirty. Yet I don't think so; I'd been eating in this place during my teenage years but didn't experience any problems. (that was in the countryside) Still, have your assessment. Though I would agree that the surroundings aren't (comfortable.)
That is one of the reasons why others opt to buy in the supermarket in different malls. You won't feel stunk after as it was fully air-conditioned.

It's up to you to choose. Comfort and convenience? - Supermarkets but if you want to save with a limited budget and fresh merchandise? Then go to public markets.

Hello, fellow Hivers! TGIF (Thank God it's Friday). As for this week, this is my contribution to #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle.

Thanks for dropping by, and this is Lhes wishing you a wonderful weekend.

I too will not buy that watermelon even if I want to eat hahaha 🤣 we might break our backs. They have in Savemore the sliced ones but it's Hella expensive, my gosh!

Biko! My favorite Filipino dessert! 😊

The fountain is a nice effort of the local officials, also to decrease the heat. The weather is evaporating us. 🤣😩🔥

Interesting I would also say supermarkets are bland and food gets protected to last longer and loses tast in my opinion.
Hehe the quest to have a raspberry in your mouth continues...

I have to agree with you. I believe everyone has a certain budget and so much time, so we have to choose what is best for ourselves.

However, if it was unsanitary or there was disease being spread, I think that everyone deserves a decent place to buy food. This doesn't appear to be the case, so I believe each should pick what works for them. I usually like the traditional markets to the supermarkets, the food is fresher and you are helping to boost the local economy.

Did you find your prices higher this week?

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world. Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday

unsanitary oh yes, though we have a budget we also need to consider the health reasons. Need to assess as it would be if health was compromised.

Yes, prices in the public market is really cheaper compared in the supermarket! Yet, I don't like buying 🤣, it was so 🥵🥵.

Maybe because I am in the city, unlike in the province.
