Focus on Dust Vote + Hive Reward Pool + Advices For New Users

dividerHive2.png

The main topic of my post today is the Dust Votes but you will also find some information about the Hive Reward Pool and some advices that I hope will be useful to new users .

I chose Dust Votes as my main topic for two reasons:

  • because many Hivers and especially new Hivers don't know what Dust Votes are.
  • because the post announcement of Hard Fork 26 (Oct. 10, 2022) has created some confusion about understanding how dust votes work.

image.png
Screenshot from: https://peakd.com/hive/@hiveio/the-evolution-of-hive-hardfork-26

I, when I had read the part of the announcement about dust votes, had thought about the elimination of Dust Votes and I also published a post in which I wrote that dust votes no longer produced an effect (I later edited my post by deleting the part about dust votes).

image.pngPost Link: https://peakd.com/hive-146620/@libertycrypto27/hive-hard-fork-26-user-side-changes-explained-le-modifiche-lato-user-spiegate-engita

HF26 did not eliminate Dust Votes because Dust votes are considered the same as regular votes only in relation to the inability to delete a post or comment that has received an upvote (either regular vote or dust vote) but Dust votes exist and have different effects on the Reward Pool than regular votes.

HF 26 added useful and important changes to Hive but the changes related to dust votes were explained in a way that was unclear and not simple even if not intentional.

Having closed this small parenthesis that I used to explain the motivation behind writing this post of mine, I will explain to you how the Hive Reward Pool works in brief and what Dust Votes are and why it is important to know what they are and what effects they produce.
I also hope that new users who read will find the part of the advice I wrote for them useful.

Hive Reward Pool

dividerHive2.png

On the Hive blockchain there is a Reward Pool that is filled daily by a fixed amount of HIVE tokens that are created daily.

image.png
Screenshot from: https://hive.blog/faq.html

The distribution of HIVE of the Reward Pool is done according to the percentages shown in the screenshot below.

image.png
Screenshot from: https://hive.blog/faq.html

Any Hive user can participate in the distribution of the Reward Pool through the tools they have at their disposal:

  • upvotes on posts and comments
  • dowvotes on posts and comments
  • votes to support DHF proposals
  • choice votes for 1 up to 30 witnesses

The weight of upvotes and downvotes depends on the amount of HIVE staked = Hive Power (HP) that each Hiver has.

The division of the reward of a post/comment between author and curator (whoever upvotes the post/comment) is = 50%/50%

When a post or comment on Hive receives an upvote the reward of that post increases but the reward is not owned by either the author of the post or the curator because the payout occurs only after 7 days after the post is published and in the interval of 7 days the value of the reward may fluctuate positively or negatively.

image.png
Screenshot from: https://hive.blog/faq.html

dividerHive1.png

What is a Dust Vote?

dividerHive2.png

A Dust Vote is an upvote given on a post or comment published on the Hive blockchain that has both of the following characteristics:

  • has a value in $ (HTU) < $0.02
    image.png

  • is the only upvote present on the post or comment or there are other upvotes but the post/comment does not reach the threshold = $0.02 .
    image.png

When a post or comment has received only 1 dust vote or multiple dust votes and has not reached a $0.02 reward at the time of payout, it does not receive any rewards and therefore both the author and the curator of the post/comment do not receive Hive Power (HP) or HBD and HP at the end of the 7 days from the publication of that post/comment.

image.png

dividerHive1.png

What should a Hiver who has an upvote < $0.02 do?

Advises and Possible Solutions

dividerHive2.png

If you have an upvote < $0.02 I will now give you some tips that are from my experience on Hive.
On Hive you have total freedom and so some of my advices are opinable and so feel free to follow them or not.

dividerHive1.png

If you like Hive put your efforts to increase your Hive Power!

dividerHive2.png

If you are a new Hiver, you have little HP, you like Hive and you are an active Hiver in posting content and interacting and if you want to grow fast on Hive you should focus completely on increasing your Hive Power (HP) and Dust Votes will only be an initial and short-term problem for you.

If you are very active on Hive (you post and interact) but you do continuous total Power Downs or delegate all HP to other accounts/projects in my opinion you are making a mistake because you are looking at the short term, you will get little from Hive, you will grow slowly and you will do very little progress on Hive.

When I was a new user on Hive, my first posts didn't exceed a dust vote even though I had put a lot of effort into writing.

image.png

At that time I did not understand the importance of interaction!

Then thanks to the valuable advice of more experienced and kind users, I started interacting more and more and focused totally on increasing my Hive Power and my growth has been continuous and the support for my content has also gradually increased.

image.png

The two elements I consider most important for growing on Hive are in order of importance:

  • interaction
  • consistency in publication.

These two elements are strongly interrelated but interaction is in my opinion the most important element.

Why should a Hive user read, comment and support a post of yours if you don't read, comment and support other authors' posts?

Quality/utility of content is obviously important on Hive but alone and without interaction will not get you good results

If you are a new Hive user, I recommend that you always put a lot of emphasis on interaction and try to maintain a comments/posts ratio of at least 10/1.

Even today that I have 50K HP my main focus is on increasing my Hive Power because it's the Hive Power that measures the weight and influence on the Hive blockchain but my main focus is also combined on increasing my level of interaction because that's the only way I will have more growth margins on Hive.

image.pngPost Link: 50K Hive Power Surpassed, Hive and My Road From Dolphin to Orca + My 2023 Hive Recap + My 2024 Hive Goals!

I like to support the projects I follow such as the Hive games and I have delegations in HP on some projects but I always set a maximum threshold = max 30%-35% of my Hive Power to be given in delegation because I like to interact with other Hive authors and I like to support my favorite authors and those who interact a lot on Hive.

I so far in almost 5 years on Hive have never done a power down because I have medium to long term goals on Hive and everyone on Hive is free to do power downs whenever we want.
But in your opinion:

  • If I had done a total Power Down of my HPs or if I had delegated all my HPs.
  • If I had posted content without commenting and interacting with other authors.

Would I have ever achieved a Hive Power = 50K HP?

Absolutely not!

So although I risk being repetitive, if you are a new hiver and have growth goals on Hive my advice is:

  • try to quickly increase your Hive Power by posting quality/useful and interesting content.
  • interact a lot with other Hivers who post useful content and/or who post content you like. Interacting and making connections is very important on Hive!

I have been educated and learned in life that it is important not only to receive but also to give to those who do something useful for me.
Doing Power Downs is absolutely a possible and legitimate action on Hive but if you have been on Hive for so long and you have received so much from Hive and you do continuous and total Power Downs and you interact very little in my opinion you show that you don't care about Hive and you only like to receive.

If you belong to this category you can always change course! ;)
Otherwise there is no problem but I think it is logical that you should not expect much and you should not expect much support from those who have a lot of Hive Power!

If, on the other hand, you are not interested in posting or interacting on Hive, the discussion changes and you can choose one of the many passive investment and earning options that Hive offers (HBD) or that some Hive based projects offer through HP delegation or the purchase of second level Hive tokens.

Dust Votes: Tips and Services anti-dust votes

dividerHive2.png

Returning to the topic of Dust Votes.

If you have an upvote of less than $0.02:.

  • you should preferably vote for other authors' posts instead of their comments if you don't want to waste your vote on both you and the author you want to support who receives your upvote.
The probability of a post receiving a reward greater than $0.02 in a 7-day interval is much higher than a comment.

Consider also that if your upvote generates a curator reward < $0.001 you will not receive a curator reward.

  • you can use two services that function to solve the dust votes problem.

These are services that vote on comments that have received dust votes in order to exceed the $0.02 threshold

The two services are:

I have tried and used these services and they both work even though their update and publication activity on Hive is 4 years old.

To use the dustbunny service you must delegate HP to the @dustbunny account
To use dustsweeper service you must send HIVE or HBD to the @dustsweeper account

Important note: I have not delved into and studied the working mechanism of these two services so before using them do your own evaluation and ask for information on their discord channels.

dividerHive1.png

Two useful tools to view Voting Power and monitor activity as author and curator

dividerHive2.png

You can use several tools to see the current value of your upvote and monitor your author and curator rewards such as the useful tool developed by @penguinpablo: https://hive-now.com/

To use this tool you need to:

  • go to https://hive-now.com/
  • enter your Hive username in the first field of the third box in the upper right and click on Save
  • in the first box in the upper left-hand corner you can see how much your upvote is worth based on different percentages of your vote.

image.png

To visualize the efficiency of your curation activity you can also use https://hivestats.io/

image.png

I hope you liked my post and I hope I gave you useful information and I thank you for taking the time to read this post of mine.

dividerHive1.png

Are you not a Hive user?

dividerHive2.png

If you are not a Hive user and don't know the world of blockchains you have two options:

You can continue to be a simple number, a simple source of data and wealth for centralized projects like Facebook & Co. without receiving anything or almost anything in return.

You can choose to be free, you can choose to have full ownership of your data and content and you can start your adventure on Hive.

The Hive blockchain is more Unique than Rare!

What makes Hive's blockchain more unique than rare are its peculiarities:

  • Hive is a Delegate Proof of Stake (DPOS) blockchain on which a large ecosystem of sites, projects and communities "lives".
  • Hive is completely decentralized
  • Hive is very fast: 3 second block speeds.
  • Hive has no transaction costs
  • Hive has many utilities and features
  • Hive has a big and beautiful community

If you don't have a Hive account you can easily create one in just a few steps.
I wrote a short tutorial where I show how to do it using the free service offered by Hive On Board:

HIVE: Registration and First Login with PeakD

image.png

Alternatively, you can create a Hive account using one of the free services offered by Inleo and Ecency or use one of the registration options at https://signup.hive.io/.

Focus on Dust Vote + Consigli per i nuovi utenti di Hive

dividerHive2.png

image.png
Screenshot from: https://peakd.com/hive/@hiveio/the-evolution-of-hive-hardfork-26

image.pngPost Link: https://peakd.com/hive-146620/@libertycrypto27/hive-hard-fork-26-user-side-changes-explained-le-modifiche-lato-user-spiegate-engita

image.png
Screenshot from: https://hive.blog/faq.html

image.png
Screenshot from: https://hive.blog/faq.html

image.png
Screenshot from: https://hive.blog/faq.html

dividerHive1.png

Cos'è un Dust Vote

dividerHive2.png

    image.png

image.pngPost Link: 50K Hive Power Surpassed, Hive and My Road From Dolphin to Orca + My 2023 Hive Recap + My 2024 Hive Goals!

Assolutamente no!

dividerHive1.png

Dust Votes: Consigli e Servizi anti-dust votes

dividerHive2.png

  • Hive è molto veloce: 3 second block speeds

This is an awesome post. The information is very valuable to use our resources valuable (since I delegate all my HP and don't curate manual a lot, I have not being paying much attention to this details).

It's great information for the new people we are bringing. Maybe too deep-? but one more reason to explain that when you are new comments are way better than likes.

Hi @tsunica and thank you so much for reading and appreciating my post

but one more reason to explain that when you are new comments are way better than likes.

Exactly this. A new user has only one important tool at the beginning of his adventure on Hive and on Hive's most important communities like Inleo: comments!

Have a nice day and Happy new year :)

Great post. I didn't know that there were a few changes happening to the dust vote but it was one of the biggest reason on why I increased my HP outside of RCs. It sucks to have some of your voting power go to waste because it didn't past that threshold and it's why I have never really delegated out my HP either.

There are many things of Hive I still dont know and some times get confuse but at least now I know what Dust Votes are, why cant delete some times and I was only using Hivestats, I plan on trying to get ppl into Hive when I can but still feel like there are details like this Im missing, thx ✌️

image.png

è l'unico upvote presente sul post o sul commento
image.png

Poi hai scritto:

A lot of people usually see dust votes as nothing but on the long run, it is good in one way or the other.
I’ve always learnt to appreciate dust votes

But sure, I agree, a dust vote even if it doesn't generate rewards is always a gesture of appreciation and so even if it doesn't generate rewards it's always a gesture to be appreciated and I've always appreciated them too

What an informative post especially to Newbies. I always consider myself a newbie although I have been staying in Hive for more than a year. Honestly, I love reading posts giving tips on how to grow on Hive and how to navigate. Since day one, I am always thankful for the many people like you who have guided beginners. And my salute to you for still keeping on engaging and doing things you do even when you have now the 50k HP. Well, I am too far from it, but my goal for this year is to reach 10k HP. Grateful for your amazing thoughts and ideas my friend.

Another very informative post man. 1 year ago my votes were powder votes but I managed to overcome that because I care about my stake in Hive. Now I'm improving my stake to be better at comments.

I am sure many people reading this post will be enlightened. That's why I will reblog this.

i have a question, if i'm the only one to vote on a comment even if i have more than 2 cents can it become dust? i already knew about the 0.02 rule but i didn't know that if it was a single vote it would be dust too...

Yes my friend all Hive go through dust votes before you have a stake that allows you to disregard them anymore and in my opinion you made the right choice to focus more on HP and it was always my choice too :)

thanks a lot for appreciating my post and for reblog :)
Have a nice day

What function do the @dustbunny and @dustweeper accounts do ?

0

To use the dustbunny service you must delegate HP to the @dustsweeper account
To use dustsweeper service you must send HIVE or HBD to the @dustsweeper account

The way it works is this: when there is one of your dust votes on a comment on Day 6, the two services vote the comment to pass the 0.02 threshold.
Consider, though, that I have tried them but have not evaluated whether it is worth using them. I honestly tried them because I wanted to write this post but I don't think I will use them for long

Excellent discussion and explanation about dust votes. I used to upvote comments 100%, but as my vp drained and I delegated my HP elsewhere, even at 100% I couldn't cross that 0.02 HTU thresh-hold. I do use dustsweeper (both delegate and contribute) but it doesn't catch everything. Since then, I've focused my upvotes exclusively on posts and use tipping tokens to reward comments.

One thing to mention is that even if a dust vote doesn't pay out HIVE or HBD, it may pay out tribe tokens. I get comment upvotes from various lolz token accounts that rarely if ever cross over 0.02, but do reward nice second layer tokens, like HH or PIMP or LEO or ALIVE. Even these can be considered "dust" since they are valued much lower than HIVE or HBD, but everything adds up and you can count on them actually paying out! Some of the tokens even offer dividends and other benefits and can also be sold for swap.hive, exchanged for HIVE and powered up.

Thank you for clarifying the "dust vote" issue. New users with little HP can gain favor with hivians with good content, engagement and interaction, but also by investing in tipping tokens and carefully distributing them daily.

I did know that dustvotes existed but didn't know how they exactly work.
For instance, I didn't know a post/comment pay-out has to reach the $0,02 threshhold to receive anything. This explains why my $0,015 upvotes on comments aren't giving me 'decent' rewards. Will focus on upping my HivePower and in the meantime only upvote articles.
Ty!
