Old Silk Road and The Place Where Three Mightiest Mountain Ranges of the World Meet
The Karakoram Highway one of the best scenic and beautiful highway of the world joins Pakistan and China. This newly constructed highway is truly a wonder of the world and many people have sacrificed their lives during its construction and you can see many memorial boards and places where a tribute is given to these martyrs.
On Karakoram highway you can see many breathtaking viewpoints in which the most spectacular point is where three mightiest mountain ranges of the world meet Karakoram,Hindukush and Himalaya. The Himalayan range is about 2400 Km long and runs through India, Pakistan, China, Bhutan and Nepal. The Karakoram mountain range is 500 Km long and mostly lies in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. The Hindukush range is 966 Km long and lies in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
This point is also very unique as on this point two big rivers of Pakistan Indus river and Gilgit river meet. The Indus river also called Lion river is 3200 Km long and is the 3rd longest river in Asia and 21st longest river in the world. Indus river is running through the entire length of Pakistan and then culminates in Arabian Sea.
Another very interesting and important view point on Karakoram Highway is a view of Old silk road. In local language they call it "Kinu-Kutto" the history mentioned on board is that firstly it was a foot path, then pony track and later they widened this old silk road into one jeep road and this path has been used till 1960. Now old silk road has been obsolete by Karakoram highway. But to preserve the historic importance of this route it has been restored and preserved.
This old silk road is also a good view point of Rakaposhi. Rakaposhi peak is 7788 Meter or 25551 Feet high and 27th highest peak in the world.
You can also the see the place where Indian and Eurasian plates collided 55 million years ago and as a result these high towering karakoram mountains formed. This process is still going on and these mountains rise seven millimeters annually.
The karakoram highway is full of history and beauty. I am in love with this place as you witness different environment after few kilometers.
