The last today’s destination of our journey in the footsteps of the Serbian royal lineage of Nemanjić was the miraculous monastery built in the 13th century at the source of the Raška river…

Monastery of Sopoćani without a doubt belongs to the very top of Serbian medieval art and architecture. As such, it has been under the protection of UNESCO since 1979, as well as other monasteries of Stari Ras that we have previously visited. It is the endowment of the Serbian king Stefan Uroš I (ruled from 1243 to 1276), who built it as a royal tomb.

In the Middle Ages, bandit attacks on monasteries were not uncommon. That is why the Sopoćani monastery is surrounded by a thick stone wall.

Манастир Сопоћани без дилеме спада у сам врх српске средњовековне уметности и архитектуре. Као такав, под заштитом је УНЕСКО-а од 1979. као и остали манастири Старог Раса које смо претходно посетили. Он је задужбина српског краља Стефана Уроша I (владао од 1243. до 1276. године), који га је изградио као краљевску гробницу.

У средњем веку разбојнички напади на манастире нису били никаква реткост. Зато је манастир Сопоћани опасан дебелим каменим зидом.

It is not known who the builders of the monastery were, but it can be assumed with great certainty that they came from the Serbian coast, Diocleia and Dalmatia, which can be concluded from the impeccable masonry, precise stone carving and knowledge of Romanesque architecture.

The church within the monastery walls is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and is a representative monument of the Raska school. It is characterized by an elongated single-nave space, a semicircular apse with a low transept, above whose intersection with the main nave rises a high dome.

Није познато ко су били градитељи манастира, али се са великом сигурношћу може претпоставити да су потицали из српског приморја, Диоклетије и Далмације, што се може закључити по беспрекорном зидању, прецизном клесању камена и познавању романичке архитектуре.

Црква унутар манастирских зидина посвећена је Светој Тројици и репрезентативни је споменик Рашке школе. Карактеришу је издужени једнобродни простор, полукружна апсида са ниским трансептом над чијим се пресеком са главним бродом уздиже висока купола.

An open narthex, with a high bell tower in front of it, the so-called exonarthex, was built by the other great founder of Sopoćani, Stefan Dušan, while he still was King (1331–1346). Before 1346, the exonarthex was decorated with frescoes imbued with new ideas. The remaining faded frescoes on it have preserved portraits of King Dušan, his wife Queen Jelena and their son, the young King Uroš.

Отворену припрату, са високим звоником испред ње, тзв. егзонартекс, саградио је други велики ктитор Сопоћана, Стефан Душан, док је још био краљ (1331–1346). Егзонартекс је до 1346. године украшен фрескама прожетим новим схватањима. Преостале избледеле фреске на њему сачувале су портрете краља Душана, његове жене краљице Јелене и њиховог сина, младог краља Уроша.

Sopoćani was celebrated all over the world by an extremely beautiful and sublime fresco-painting which decorated the inner walls of the central nave (altar and nave) and in the entrance part (narthex). In other parts of the church, the frescoes are of unequal quality and lag far behind the frescoes by which the Monastery of Sopoćani are so clearly recognizable in the overall preserved Byzantine painting.

I have to apologize for the poor quality of the photos in this place, caused by a combination of restrictions on the use of cameras and poor lighting inside the Church of the Holy Trinity. The photographs cannot conjure up and explain why this fresco painting is so spectacular. To understand that, you have to come to this place in person.

Сопоћане је широм света прославило изузетно лепо и узвишено фреско-сликарство којим су украшени унутрашњи зидови централног брода (олтар и наос) и у улазном делу (припрати). У другим деловима цркве фреске су неједнаког квалитета и знатно заостају за живописом по коме се Сопоћани тако уочљиво распознају у свеукупном сачуваном византијском сликарству.

Морам да се извиним због слабијег квалитета фотографија на овом месту, узрокованих комбинацијом ограничења употребе камера и слабим осветљењем унутар цркве Свете Тројице. Фотографије не могу дочарају и објасне због чега је ово фрескосликарство тако спектакуларно. Да бисте то разумели, морате лично доћи на ово место.

At the end of the 17th century (1689), the Ottomans inflicted the most severe destruction on the monastery. It was abandoned for two and a half centuries, and the beautiful frescoes were exposed to the whims of nature and the ravages of time. All that time, the frescoes of Sopoćani endured thanks to the unusually high quality workmanship. Unfortunately, they did not withstand the robbery: the black space you see on the frescoes is a testimony to that, because there was gilding on that place, which the Turks scratched from the frescoes.

Крајем XVII века (1689) Османлије манастиру наносе најтеже разарање. Два и по века био је напуштен а прелепе фреске биле изложене ћудима природе и зубу времена. Све то време сопоћанске фреске издржале су захваљујући необично квалитетној изради. Нажалост, пљачку нису издржале: црни простор који видите на фрескама сведочанство је томе, јер је на том месту била позлата коју су Турци са фресака састругали.

The names of the painters from Sopoćani have not been recorded, but it is certain that they were unrivaled in their time. Apparently, they were educated on the Holy Mountain in the Monastery of Hilandar, or in important monastic centers of medieval Serbia, and they were obviously familiar with other art centers in the East and West. These were mostly the sons of feudal lords, imbued with the spirit of Orthodoxy, and they preferred to go to Constantinople, the metropolis of Orthodox painting at the time.

Имена сопоћанских сликара нису остала забележена, али је извесно да им у оно доба није било равних. По свему судећи, образовани су на Светој Гори у манастиру Хиландару, или у значајним манастирским средиштима средњевековне Србије, а сасвим очигледно су им били познати и други ликовни центри на истоку и западу. То су углавном били синови господара-феудалаца, задојени духом православља, и најрадије су одлазили у Цариград, тадашњу метрополу православног сликарства.

This spectacular mastery of color and composition half a century before Giotto practically heralds the emergence of the Renaissance in Europe:

“The grandiose composition of the Assumption of the Virgin, on the west wall of the main part of the temple, with an area of over 30 m², was conceived as a magnificent scene of the Virgin's death. By the scaffold of the Mother of Christ, placed in the middle of the composition, stand Christ, angels, apostles and archbishops, as strong and beautiful, sad heroes, bowed heads, in restrained pain. Their figures, given in a wide, epic, strong and monumental line of lines, are reminiscent of statues of clever ancient Greek philosophers from the most beautiful ancient works, as if hinting at Dante's poetry and the paintings of Giotto, the herald of Renaissance.”

Ово спектакуларно владање бојом и композицијом пола века пре Ђота практично најављује појаву ренесансе у Европи:

„Грандиозна композиција Богородичиног Успења, на западном зиду главног дела храма, површине преко 30 м², замишљена је као величанствена сцена Богородичине смрти. Крај одра Христове мајке, смештеног у средини композиције, стоје Христос, анђели, апостоли и архијереји, као снажни и лепи, тужни јунаци, погнутих глава, у суздржаном болу. Њихове фигуре, дате у широком, епском, снажном и монументалном току линија, што подсећају на статуе умних старогрчких филозофа са најлепших античких дела, као да наговештавају поезију Дантеа и сликарство Ђота, весника ренесансе.“

“All the frescoes in the main part of the Sopoćani temple are inspired by the perfect harmony of drawings and colors. They perhaps best confirm that only a few colors are enough for a true genius, so that he can most impressively communicate the immense wealth of his feelings and his imaginations. Ocher, light green, violet, a little azure (they say that azure was more expensive than gold), in alternating flow, merges and overflows in all possible tones, from the darkest to the lightest, through many figures of giant growth, at the festival in the most meaningful silence.”

Оне можда најбоље потврђују како је истинском генију довољно само мало боја, па да најпотресније саопшти неизмерно богатство својих осећања и својих имагинација. Окер, светлозелено, виолет, мало азура (кажу да је азур био скупљи од злата), у наизменичном току, слива се и прелива у свим могућим тоновима, од најтамнијег до најсветлијег, преко мноштва фигура дивовског раста, на светковини у најсадржајнијој тишини.“

In the most important places, the background of the frescoes was gold with imitation mosaics, and today, under the influence of the weather, it has remained dark brown or black.

На најважнијим местима позадина фресака била је златна са имитацијом мозаика, а данас је под утицајем времена остала загасито смеђа или црна.

King Uroš I intended Sopoćani for his tomb church. Apart from the fact that a tomb was prepared for the founder in a traditional place, in the southwestern part of the nave, marked with a sarcophagus made of reddish marble…

Краљ Урош I наменио је Сопоћане себи за гробну цркву. Осим што је за ктитора припремљен гроб на традиционалном месту, у југозападном делу наоса, обележен саркофагом од црвенкастог мермера…

…in the northwestern part of the narthex is lying his mother, Queen Ana Dandolo (granddaughter of the famous Venetian lord Enrico Dandolo), who died at the time when the church was completed. A picture of her death is representatively displayed on the north wall of the narthex.

…у северозападном делу припрате сахрањена је његова мајка, краљица Ана Дандоло (унука славног млетачког дужда Енрика Дандола), која је умрла у време кад је црква завршавана. Слика њене смрти репрезентативно је приказана на северном зиду припрате.
