There is one old street in Vranje that contains more history than entire countries have…

It is the Street of Grandma Zlata, which is named after grandmother of Bora Stanković, on his father’s side, who lived there. At the very entrance to the street, there is the restaurant ‘Čaršija’, on the wall of which there is a mural in honor of Grandma Zlata.

Here, at number nine, lived and worked her most famous grandson, the great Serbian writer Bora Stanković. He lost his parents early, so Baba Zlata raised him instead of them.

The first part of the story about this house referred to his life and work, to the most famous works in which he extraordinarily well preserved the spirit of the past with great psychological descriptions of personalities and moral dilemmas arising from social relations in Serbia just liberated from Ottoman occupation. The second part of the story about his house-museum, refers to the architecture and life of that time. The house was characteristic of this area, a roof on four waters with a porch and a doxat (a kind of of protruding balcony), surrounded by a wall with a well inside, summer kitchen, and trees were planted to give freshness on hot summer days.

The third element of the Museum House is the ethno element – in the house you can see personal belongings of Bora Stanković and his grandmother Zlata, his manuscripts, but also furniture and clothing characteristic of the period:

It is a rule for all time that it is a blessing to have a good neighbor. Bora’s neighbor had a doxat ideal for serenades for young beauties on summer evenings… and for posing in front of the camera!

But that is not all that Street of Baba Zlata contains. Just twenty meters away, another important part of Serbian history awaits us…
