Yesterday I had a very special day: it was my birthday!
Honestly, I didn't think I'd enjoy it so much. Ever since my son left for Spain, I've been mindful of our shared celebrations. He's on July 2nd, and I'm on the 8th, so for many years we made that week a tradition. Walks, excursions, outings... there was always something that united us from the 2nd to the 8th like a mother-son ritual.

Sinceramente, no pensé que lo disfrutaría tanto. Desde que mi hijo se fue a España, he tenido presentes nuestras celebraciones compartidas. Él es el 2 de julio y yo el 8, así que durante muchos años hicimos de esa semana una tradición. Paseos, excursiones, salidas... siempre había algo que nos unía del 2 al 8, como un ritual madre-hijo.
I confess I imagined these days would be sad. The shadow of his absence weighs heavily, but surprisingly, it wasn't a gray week. Rather, it was a carousel of emotions.
We stayed connected almost the entire time. I adored every gesture and every expression during our video calls. We sang "happy birthday" to each other, shared gossip, made jokes, and put together a collage of photos of him to feel closer to him. Fortunately, it was quiet at work, and we were able to talk and laugh a lot, despite the time difference that sometimes works against us.

Estuvimos conectados casi todo el tiempo. Adoré cada gesto y cada expresión durante nuestras videollamadas. Por suerte en el trabajo estábamos tranquilos y pudimos hablar y reír mucho, a pesar de la diferencia horaria que a veces juega en nuestra contra.
But that wasn't all. My nephew (who has been living with me since my son left) and a friend of his teamed up with my husband and my mother to surprise me. Since they know I love ice cream, they organized a trip to Sabor Cid ice cream shop.
This magnificent place is located on the corner of H Street and 23rd Avenue in the center of town. It's clean, beautiful, and offers first-class service. The staff, always friendly and helpful, made us feel right at home.
Pero eso no fue todo. Mi sobrino (que vive conmigo desde que mi hijo se fue) y un amigo suyo se unieron a mi esposo y mi madre para darme una sorpresa. Como saben que me encanta el helado, organizaron una visita a la heladería Sabor Cid.
Este magnífico lugar se encuentra en la esquina de la calle H y la avenida 23, en el centro de la ciudad. Es limpio, bonito y ofrece un servicio de primera. El personal, siempre amable y atento, nos hizo sentir como en casa.
The decor is a blend of modern and colonial style. The columns feature mosaic-covered bases, the ceiling is covered by a large awning, and in one corner, a decorative bicycle sits beneath a fluorescent sign that reads: "It's not crunch, it's Cid... but it still melts." A playful phrase that plays on the name of the ice cream shop and its products.
The entrance is surrounded by artificial grass in various shades of green that, although not natural, looked beautiful. That intense green lent a fresh and cheerful feel to the place.
La decoración es una mezcla de estilo moderno y colonial. Las columnas tienen bases cubiertas de mosaico, el techo está cubierto por un gran toldo y, en una esquina, una bicicleta decorativa reposa bajo un letrero fluorescente que dice: «No es crujiente, es Cid... pero se derrite». Una frase divertida que juega con el nombre de la heladería y sus productos.
La entrada está rodeada de césped artificial en varios tonos de verde que, aunque no es natural, se veía precioso. Ese verde intenso le daba un aire fresco y alegre al lugar.
I ordered a large cup called Piacere Cid: five scoops of ice cream in the flavors of lemon cookie (a first for me!) and chocolate. It came with jelly beans, biscuits, and a popsicle in the center. A visual and gustatory delight!
My mom and nephew chose the Fiamo di Amores, a creation consisting of a chocolate coulant accompanied by two scoops of the same flavor, covered in a layer of molten chocolate. Spectacular.
My husband, faithful to his traditional preferences, ordered three scoops of chocolate ice cream.
Pedí un vaso grande llamado Piacere Cid: cinco bolas de helado de galleta de limón (¡una novedad para mí!) y chocolate. Venía con gominolas, galletas y una paleta en el centro. ¡Una delicia visual y gustativa!
Mi madre y mi sobrino eligieron el Fiamo di Amores, una creación que consiste en un coulant de chocolate acompañado de dos bolas del mismo sabor, cubiertas con una capa de chocolate fundido. Espectacular.
Mi marido, fiel a sus gustos tradicionales, pidió tres bolas de helado de chocolate.
Upon leaving, we discovered a quaint kiosk selling ice cream cones and fast food. Everything at Sabor Cid tasted great, in more ways than one.
Al salir, descubrimos un pintoresco quiosco que vendía helados y comida rápida. Todo en Sabor Cid estaba buenísimo, en más de un sentido.
At the end of the day, I felt deeply happy. Surrounded by my family, friends, and my son… although at a distance, always close.

One thing that I like now a days in social media is the fact that we can connect to our love ones through videocalls and make celebrations memorable through it. It was a big help that we can share special moments with our families and love ones through it.
