Good friends of Architecture + Design, today I bring you a place in Havana that has been a National Monument since 1987, although it is a place of farewells and therefore contains a lot of sadness, it is still a place of relevant beauty due to the large number of works sculptures, in addition to an extraordinary architectural design, the Necropolis of Christopher Columbus.

The main entrance is located in one of the most central and modern places in Havana, in the Vedado neighborhood of the Plaza de la Revolución municipality, on the corner of Calzada Zapata and the end of Calle 12, it covers 57 hectares, as seen on the map, it has a more or less rectangular and inside it has streets and avenues, it is a city between walls, very well structured, with numbers or letters that mark the streets. Its construction began in 1871 and ended in 1886, 15 years later, making it more than 135 years old. The architectural style is romantic - Byzantine.

I love the main entrance, it is a work of art, every time I pass by I am amazed by its beauty, there are three arches, two small ones and a large arch in the center and above it there is a large marble sculpture, according to what I was able to search in the bibliography that I will state at the end, this sculpture represents the three theological virtues; Faith, Hope and Charity, really give an important relevance to that entry, also when I was able to enlarge it in the photo and observe, it is moving to see the three nuns and the one in the center with the child in her arms and the other two at her feet, a very nice and clear scene, the entire cover was designed by Calixto de Loira, a Spanish architect, however the reliefs and sculptures were made by the Cuban artist José Vilalta de Saavedra. The arch itself is spectacular due to the amount of details that it contains in its structure, a series of points, circles, squares and triangles all very well aligned, its perfect symmetry draws my attention, every time I look at it I notice a new detail, like the reliefs are beautiful. The entrance has a large iron gate that opens every day at 8 am and closes at 5 pm. Currently they are doing maintenance work on that entrance which made me very happy because it shows that it needs it.

It has three other entrances, one on Calle Colón, a street that borders the entire south side of the cemetery and hence the name, this one is less showy because it lacks sculptures, but it is an arch similar to the one at the main entrance. , smaller On Calle Protestantes, which is the one that runs along the back of the Cemetery, there is another entrance, which is almost always closed, it is for service, and on Calzada de Zapata there is another but it is only for car exits , these last two, without special attraction, are simple railings. All entrances and exits from the cemetery lead directly to the Central Chapel

Passing the arch of the main entrance we are located on Avenida Cristóbal Colón, it is the main one and leads to the Central Chapel as we have already explained. The chapel, a place where everyone who wants, before taking their missing relatives to the grave, passes and offers a ceremony for the last goodbye, it is a very nice church, but it was closed, I went after 2 in the late, but I was able to photograph it from outside, it is in the center of the Cemetery, its yellow color and its domes are very striking, I particularly like it a lot and in its surroundings there are small well-kept gardens, like its streets.

Both in the main avenues and in the intermediate streets there are countless pantheons and sculptures, there is one in particular that is not on the main avenue but on the parallel street, but all Cubans know how to get there, it is known as La Milagrosa, it is a sculpture located in the tomb of Amelia Goiry de la Hoz, a legend has been created around that monument and everyone who has a hospitalized relative or a sick child in the family turns to her, she is always surrounded by flowers, all visitors they take him, there is a myth that when you pray for someone's health you cannot turn your back on the statue and you have to walk with your eyes fixed on it, until you leave the place.

Imagen13.png

Along its streets and avenues there are domes, striking monuments, sphinxes, sculptures, stained glass windows, many achievements in marble, granite, stones, but all of them are of great beauty, that is why this sacred field is highly visited by both Cubans and foreigners.

The pantheon where the remains of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, Cuban independence leader, who started the 10-year war, rest. In the photos you can see the hardware, also very remarkable.

The wall that borders the cemetery is made of masonry painted yellow with white crosses, it also contains blacksmith work, along the entire edge of the cemetery the same composition is maintained, three crosses and three bars, and so on throughout the 54 hectares.

I am going to leave it here because it is very extensive to talk about all the architectural and monumental beauty that the Colon Necropolis contains, it is only a sketch. In another opportunity I will specify many more details and monuments that contain great stories and beauties.
I hope you have been interested in giving this little tour of a place that, although sad, contains great heritage value, I wish you all a nice day and I am sure that we will continue to see each other

Yes, my sister @taniagonzalez , I know you don't like what makes us go to that place, but you have to look at everything with the prism that it carries, this sacred field contains so much art that unless it's there for some bad moment I can't stop admiring it, it also keeps so much history behind its walls, that later I look at it from that point🤗❤️

Dear @lileisabel, your post is full of remarkable architectural pieces. First the Neo-byzantine main gate, then the amazing octagonal Central Chapel and finally, the monuments in a variety of architectural styles. Each subsequent object seems more beautiful and impressive than the previous one. But in fact, I can't say which is more beautiful and which is more impressive.❤️
It is a strange feeling when one walks between mausoleums and tombstones and these graves are not just graves but also cultural heritage, a tourist site full of cultural monuments with such beautiful architecture - two incompatible things, isn't it?
I look forward to your next wonderful posts about this place! 😊
