Greetings to all the friends of Architecture + Design, I hope you had a nice weekend. I decided to go on Saturday to the Palacio del Segundo Cabo where there is an interactive museum on Cuba-Europe cultural relations and my son had told me about it, I really liked the idea that such a modern type of museum could be found precisely in one of the oldest buildings in Havana and towards we headed.

I want to tell you that I did not stop delighting myself with the architecture of the place, it always transports me, I like it a lot, but I had the setback that the museum was not open at full capacity because I could not appreciate all its modernity and of course my expectations were higher than reality, but in any case it was still a very beautiful place with its history. Therefore, I show you up to what I managed to see.

The entire exterior of the museum retains its originality, although it has been restored, always preserving its structure. This Palace was built between the years 1770 and 1791, or sea, at the end of the 18th century, more than 200 years ago. It is located on the corner before reaching the Castillo de la Real Fuerza and crossing diagonally to the right is the Museo de los Capitanes Generales, just in front are the gardens of the great Plaza de Armas, its exact address is O´ Reilly between Tacón and Avenida del Puerto. It was created by the Spaniard Antonio Fernández de Trebejos y Zaldívar.

Initially it was built to be the Post Office Administration House and over the years and decades dissimilar functions and remodeling were attributed to it, being for several years the Cuban Institute of the Book, currently it is the Interpretation Center of cultural relations Cuba - Europe, where modern technology allows us to intertwine aspects of the history, art and literature of both places.

The style used is moderate baroque, common in Havana constructions of the time, characterized by sober lines, the use of stonework, with rows of semicircular columns forming arches. In the upper part of the front you can see the long balconies with seven windows, three in the center and two on both sides, they are made of wood painted blue and white with stained glass windows in the upper part.

Like the Museum of the General Captains, it has a large portal carved in stone with the coat of arms of the Royal Crown, on both sides of the entrance there are two lanterns, the same as those of the colonial era. On the right hand side, standing in front of the main entrance, there are two rows of windows, with three windows each, a total of six, with cast iron balusters, because in that wing of the building there is an intermediate floor. On the left side there is only a single row of four larger windows. It has huge, highly polished wooden doors with bronze inlays.

Upon entering there is a hall with a square vintage lamp suspended above and a large cast iron grille which is embedded in the carved stone frame with very beautiful shapes and the grille has the same structure as the frame, a very curious and beautiful work. the decorations it has. The door remains closed. The central courtyard cannot be accessed through that entrance. You must first enter the corridors on the right side.

In the first room it can be seen that in order to have all the technology and air-condition the place, it was necessary to line the walls with plasterboard and the windows with glass, so the entire exterior is made of stone, but all that remains of its architecture prior to the view is the roofs and windows. In this area you can access the entire history of the discovery of the new world by Christopher Columbus, it is an area purely of History, where through a control you access the part of it that you want to hear.

Imagen33.png

The area that follows has a large tunnel through which you advance and is a chronology of great figures in history and the different artistic manifestations of Cuba and Europe, you can see how they are intertwined from the 17th to the 20th century.

Imagen26.png

The next room is the travelers room, where there are some towers with screens and anyone can search and select the traveler's chronicle of their choice, activate it and listen to the story, very nice experience.

There is another area that is like simulating one of the cabins of Christopher Columbus's ships, where the sound of the sea is heard and there is one of the windows that these ships had where the sea is reflected as if you were on board a ship, here I apologize for the photo that did not come out very well because the place was very dark.

Imagen30.png

After the ship's cabin you can go out to the central patio, a beauty for me, I have to say that it was one of the things that I liked the most, it is the only place inside that preserves its original state thanks to the restoration carried out, a beauty , filled with a variety of plants and surrounded by beautiful columns that ended in arches. In addition, the balcony of the middle floor of the right wing can be seen and a carved stone doorway with marble steps leading to the top.

Imagen31.png

What I didn't like about this beautiful courtyard were the small wooden frames placed on top of the tall old frames ending in the shape of arches, I didn't understand what they meant and as much as I asked the local workers they couldn't tell me, I was disappointed a little, in addition to knowing in advance that I could not go up, they told us when we entered, because they were doing maintenance work, I tried to convince them that I only wanted to observe the place, but in vain, I settled for photographing the stairs and the windows of the floor above from the central patio.

Well friends, I leave you with this little tour where we could appreciate the history, art and architecture, greetings to all and have a nice day.

It is very important to preserve the original state of the building in restorations. Otherwise, there is no difference between demolishing and rebuilding that structure and non-original restoration. Thank you for this beautiful trip and architectural review.

Every time I see your posts, I can see many wonderful places that I had missed in Havana, and this building is a jewel of architecture that mixes the classic with its large columns and doors with modernity. Greetings!

A museum becomes more enjoyable when it provides interactive features for its guests and visitors. And the Palacio del Segundo Cabo seems like it has fulfilled this crucial criteria. Not only do people savor its modernity but also get connected to remnants from its past as shown in your favorite spot, its interior courtyard. 😊

Aside from that, which particular exhibit of that museum caught your attention plus interest and why @lileisabel?

Hello @storiesoferne , I really found it very curious to go to an interactive museum, I had never been and I didn't know that there was so much modernity in Havana, from the museum itself what caught my attention the most was the chronological tunnel, very beautiful, when one enters in it, he advances in history and sees what was happening in Cuba and in Europe in the same timeline and how, on occasions, both historical and cultural events interrelated with each other, a very beautiful journey, a cordial greeting.

Oh yeah, that chronological tunnel looks like an awesome exhibit to interact with. Similar to a time machine, it transports you to various periods of Cuba and Europe in general. I'd probably also choose that one since I'm a kind of an adventurous person when it comes to historical matters. Have a great week @lileisabel! 😊
