Where History and Architecture merge: Part II [ESP-ENG]

Good friends, in the past days I showed you the whole exterior of the Castle of the Three Kings, known by us Cubans as El Morro, well in this post we are going to go through its thick walls and see what is inside.

Buenas amigos, en días pasados les mostré todo el exterior del Castillo de los Reyes Magos, conocido por nosotros los cubanos como El Morro, pues en este post vamos a traspasar sus gruesos muros y ver lo que hay en su interior.

The entrance is a stone archway decorated with lanterns and a large thick metal door. Then there are two small rooms that serve as foyer, both with arched ceilings from which hang two iron lamps very consistent with the rustic place they adorn.

La entrada es un arco de piedra decorado con faroles y una gran puerta gruesa de metal. Luego hay dos pequeñas habitaciones que hacen las veces de vestíbulo, ambas con techos arqueados de los que cuelgan dos lámparas de hierro muy acordes con el rústico lugar que adornan.

On the right hand side in the first room there is a restaurant that at the moment was not yet giving service to the public, but I could take pictures because I was amazed with the brick arches right in the semicircle, it is a beauty, I was a while contemplating them, later in my walk through this formidable castle I could realize that I would see many more.

A mano derecha en la primera sala hay un restaurante que por el momento todavía no estaba dando servicio al público, pero pude hacer fotos porque me quedé boquiabierta con los arcos de ladrillo justo en el semicírculo, es una preciosidad, estuve un rato contemplándolos, más tarde en mi paseo por este formidable castillo pude darme cuenta que vería muchos más.

In the next room to the left there is a small bar very nice and very clean, for me this is fundamental, here everything is made of stone including ceilings and arches. It has long windows that give clarity with balusters of turned wood, when we finished the visit we had a snack in it with my son.

En la sala contigua a la izquierda hay un pequeño bar muy bonito y muy limpio, para mi esto es fundamental, aquí todo es de piedra incluidos techos y arcos. Tiene largas ventanas que dan claridad con balaustres de madera torneada, cuando terminamos la visita merendamos en ella con mi hijo.

After these two rooms we arrived at a paved patio that is the liveliest area because in it are the exhibition pavilions where the history of this great fortress and its importance is described, which was none other than safeguarding the Cuban port. That is where we headed.

Tras estas dos salas llegamos a un patio empedrado que es la zona más animada porque en él se encuentran los pabellones expositivos donde se describe la historia de esta gran fortaleza y su importancia, que no era otra que salvaguardar el puerto cubano. Hacia allí nos dirigimos.

On the outside everything is built with big stones , inside the pavilions the whole arched roof is completely made of brick, I could not stop looking at it, I love arches and bricks and if these two things merge for me it is perfect, still in my head I can not understand how they could build something like that, with those bricks perfectly aligned. In these three pavilions are described in banners and photos everything related to the Morro, our history and culture, there are some objects and weapons in glass urns.

En el exterior todo está construido con grandes piedras , en el interior de los pabellones todo el techo arqueado es completamente de ladrillo, no podía dejar de mirarlo, me encantan los arcos y los ladrillos y si estas dos cosas se fusionan para mi es perfecto, todavía en mi cabeza no puedo entender como pudieron construir algo así, con esos ladrillos perfectamente alineados. En estos tres pabellones se describe en pancartas y fotos todo lo relacionado con el Morro, nuestra historia y cultura, hay algunos objetos y armas en urnas de cristal.

By mistake I entered the second pavilion but they communicate with each other by small arches in the shape of a beak, so I went back to the first one where the Chapel is located, it is very beautiful, it looks like a little piece of church cut out and located in that space, it contrasts a lot, the rustic walls with the ecletian ornaments and its wooden seats.

Por error entré en el segundo pabellón pero se comunican entre sí por pequeños arcos en forma de pico, así que volví al primero donde se encuentra la Capilla, es muy bonita, parece un trocito de iglesia recortada y ubicada en ese espacio, contrasta mucho, las paredes rústicas con los adornos ecletianos y sus asientos de madera.

In one of the pavilions there is a map where are marked all the Spanish fortifications scattered in Latin America, there were more than 40 marked, only in Cuba there are 4 fortresses, so the reign of Spain created large fortresses to defend the colonized territories. It also explains how the English took Havana, being this one of the serious damages to the Morro, where it was necessary to make a reconstruction of much embergadura.

En uno de los pabellones hay un mapa donde están marcadas todas las fortificaciones españolas diseminadas en América Latina, había más de 40 marcadas, solo en Cuba hay 4 fortalezas, así que el reinado de España creó grandes fortalezas para defender los territorios colonizados. También se explica como los ingleses tomaron La Habana, siendo este uno de los graves daños al Morro, donde hubo que hacer una reconstrucción de mucha embergadura.

Next to these pavilions there are two more that are used for expo-sales, much more lively, full of people, one is above the other, the lower one is with brick ceilings like the rest, the upper one is accessed by a stone staircase quite worn but the walls are coated and painted white, I asked and they explained that they were very deteriorated and had leaks so a repair was made and they decided to do so for conservation, I would have preferred the bricks, but still they are beautiful.

Junto a estos pabellones hay dos más que se utilizan para expo-venta, mucho más animados, llenos de gente, uno está encima del otro, el de abajo es con techos de ladrillo como el resto, al de arriba se accede por una escalera de piedra bastante desgastada pero las paredes están revestidas y pintadas de blanco, pregunté y me explicaron que estaban muy deterioradas y tenían goteras por lo que se hizo una reparación y decidieron hacerlo así por conservación, yo hubiera preferido los ladrillos, pero aun así son preciosos.

At the end of the central courtyard there is a ramp leading up to the lighthouse, which was padlocked, but luckily for me some workers needed to check something about its operation and we took advantage and climbed up.
The interior is extremely cramped and stuffy because, although it has four windows in the walls bordering the staircase, all of which are visible from afar, they are glassed shut. The staircase is marble steps , I was very excited , I have rarely managed to climb.

Al final del patio central hay una rampa que lleva al faro, que estaba cerrada con candado, pero por suerte para mí unos trabajadores necesitaban comprobar algo de su funcionamiento y aprovechamos y subimos.
El interior es extremadamente estrecho y sofocante porque, aunque tiene cuatro ventanas en las paredes que bordean la escalera, todas ellas visibles desde lejos, están cerradas con cristales. La escalera es de peldaños de mármol , me hizo mucha ilusión , pocas veces he conseguido subir .

The masonry staircase ends about 3 meters from the top and there is a wooden hut and from there the staircase is made of wood , the last section is very low and fine who is afraid of getting locked up can not climb , and when you go up you feel the air . There is a cement platform where in the center there are some covered reflectors , which are uncovered and activated every night , to cross with its beam and illuminate the entire bay , above them there is a glass and metal dome through which you can see the sky , it gave me a little dizzy looking up.

La escalera de mampostería termina a unos 3 metros de la cima y hay una caseta de madera y a partir de ahí la escalera es de madera , el último tramo es muy bajo y fino quien tenga miedo de quedarse encerrado no puede subir , y cuando subes sientes el aire . Hay una plataforma de cemento donde en el centro hay unos reflectores cubiertos , que se destapan y se activan todas las noches , para cruzar con su haz e iluminar toda la bahía , encima de ellos hay una cúpula de cristal y metal a través de la cual se ve el cielo, me dio un poco de mareos mirar hacia arriba.

Stepping out onto a small circular eave with railings that serves as a lookout , the view is lost in the city or the sea , depending on how you look at it . The breeze is strong, it almost feels like flying, it's incredible, I love this place with everything, the air, the sun and the sea.

Al salir a un pequeño alero circular con barandillas que sirve de mirador , la vista se pierde en la ciudad o en el mar , según se mire . La brisa es fuerte, casi se siente como volar, es increíble, amo este lugar con todo, el aire, el sol y el mar.

After getting off the lighthouse I sat for a while to contemplate the bay, the boardwalk, the sea and for a moment I lost myself in it. In this place despite its history and its military purpose of yesteryear, in my opinion has one of the most beautiful and relaxing views. Sitting on these stone structures so well placed that neither time nor the sea have been able to bend, away from the bustle of the city, invites us to enjoy carefree of these beautiful views that floods our spirit of peace, away from a Havana full of noise and uncertainty.

Después de bajar del faro me senté un rato a contemplar la bahía, el malecón, el mar y por un momento me perdí en él. En este lugar a pesar de su historia y su finalidad militar de antaño, en mi opinión tiene una de las vistas más bonitas y relajantes. Sentarse en estas estructuras de piedra tan bien colocadas que ni el tiempo ni el mar han podido doblegar, lejos del bullicio de la ciudad, nos invita a disfrutar despreocupadamente de estas hermosas vistas que inunda nuestro espíritu de paz, lejos de una Habana llena de ruido e incertidumbre.

We continue walking through different pavilions, basements that explain us that in the past were dungeons, and several ramps and cannons always next to the walls that overlook the outside in a defensive position, function that fulfilled this huge fortress for more than a century.

Seguimos caminando por diferentes pabellones, sótanos que nos explican en el pasado fueron calabozos, y varias rampas y cañones siempre junto a las murallas que dan al exterior en posición defensiva, función que cumplió esta enorme fortaleza durante más de un siglo.

We climb a narrow stone staircase that takes us to the highest level of the fortification, there is a semi-destroyed viewpoint from where you can see the entire moat, that in the part closest to the sea has a sandy terrain.

Subimos por una estrecha escalera de piedra que nos lleva al nivel más alto de la fortificación, hay un mirador semi destruido desde donde se puede ver todo el foso, que en la parte más cercana al mar tiene un terreno arenoso.

There are stairs to go down to the moat, some romantic used it to leave their love, because in that deep moat I could read the words "I love you" composed with aligned stones.

Hay unas escaleras para bajar al foso, algún romántico la utilizó para dejar plasmado su amor, pues en ese profundo foso pude leer las palabras "te quiero" compuestas con piedras alineadas.

When we descended we passed by the small bar and sat down to enjoy a delicious frappé lemonade, where we also took advantage and rested from our long walk in time. Greetings to all and I hope you enjoy the ride and have a nice day.
