A little bit grown up

Five months have passed since I started living in Havana. Time seems to have stood still because I didn’t feel the hours and days go by. For me, it feels like I arrived in the Cuban capital just yesterday, but when I think about it, many things have actually happened.
I came with the goal of finding better job opportunities. In my home province, employment is rather difficult to come by, and in my field of specialization (translation and interpretation), opportunities are scarce, almost nonexistent.
Once here, a friend had a job secured for me. It was in a small electronic games shop. The pay wasn’t much, but it offered me lodging. My aunt lives very close by, so food wasn’t much of a problem.
Later, on weekends, I began working at a small stand where I sold everyday products like food and toiletries. I did this alongside the job at the games shop. Things went well there, and I even set the sales record.
Finally, I got the opportunity to work at Lucero (my current job). I earn much more there, although the work is quite demanding. I’ve learned a lot about restaurant service, and in general, working with the public seems to be meant for me.
I’ve also practiced my specialty there, since quite a few customers have been assigned to me precisely because of my command of English.
All of the above has been in terms of work. As for my social circle, things have gone very well, because although I’m far from my husband, my friends have been migrating here, just as I did.
So, practically, the group is complete. I miss my province and my parents very much, but there’s no doubt that this city is made for people who set themselves challenges and want to grow. It’s been five months in Havana—months in which I’ve felt a little more grown-up.
