Hola, amigos de Full Deportes. Llevo tiempo sin contribuir a la comunidad por dos razones fundamentales, en cierto sentido excluyentes e independientes entre sí. La buena noticia es que una de ellas ya dejó de operar, pues finalmente la semana pasada me titulé como Doctor en Ciencias, una tarea que demandó muchísimo esfuerzo y concentración en los últimos meses. La segunda, todavía activa, tiene que ver con los problemas de acceso a la red cableada —esto es, a la banda ancha fija— en mi edificio de la residencia universitaria. Esto me imposibilita conectarme de manera racional, desde el punto de vista económico, a las transmisiones deportivas en Internet. Este domingo hice un aparte y me moví a casa de un amigo para no perderme el tercer round de la interesante serie entre los finalmente enrachados White Sox —sí, los mismísimos líderes de la división central de la Liga Americana— y los Astros, que pelean duro con los Rangers y los Mariners por la primacía en el oeste.	Hello, friends of Full Deportes. It's been a while since I last contributed to the community, for two fundamental reasons, in a sense mutually exclusive and independent of each other. The good news is that one of them is no longer in play: last week I finally earned my Doctor of Science degree, a task that demanded enormous effort and focus over the past few months. The second has to do with wired-connection issues—that is, fixed broadband—in my dorm building, which makes it economically irrational for me to follow sports broadcasts over the Internet. Even so, I made an exception this Sunday and headed to a friend's place so I wouldn't miss Game 3 of the intriguing series between the suddenly hot White Sox—yes, the very leaders of the AL Central—and the Astros, who are fighting hard against the Rangers and Mariners for the top spot in the West.

It's a club I hold dear for having been home to many Cuban players, from Hall of Famer Minnie Miñoso to Canseco, and later the unforgettable José Ariel Contreras and Orlando "El Duque" Hernández. Not long ago, four of my countrymen coexisted there as regulars in the lineup (link): Yoán Moncada, Luis Robert, José Abreu, and Yasmani Grandal. Now we have Miguel Vargas pulling his weight. On the Houston side, meanwhile, Yordan Álvarez is no small thing either.

Before the crowd had even settled into their seats, Jeremy Peña got out in front of the reasonably reliable Erick Fedde, the home team's answer atop the mound. Ronel Blanco, Houston's starter, has excellent-moving breaking stuff in his arsenal, but he came into the game rattled, with plenty of wildness. The White Sox strung together a walk to Antonacci with a perfect opposite-field home run from Asian star Munetaka Murakami, who punished a slider that hung on Blanco. Vargas, son of legendary Cuban ballplayer Lázaro Vargas, backed up Fedde well in the top of the second by starting a double play that snuffed out the runner-on-first-no-outs threat. But the next inning, Jeremy Peña launched his second homer of the afternoon, catching up to a 94-mph pitch and sending it toward the farthest edge of the infield. Peña is officially locked in. 2-2

Blanco fell back into his control troubles toward the end of the first third of the game, and these scrappy White Sox pounced to scratch across another run, stringing together a walk to Romo, a hit from the ever-on-base Antonacci, and a hard grounder off Murakami's bat through the second-base area. Paredes saved two runs single-handedly with a great double play on a hard-hit ball from Vargas down the third-base line. Aside from the pesky Peña, Fedde was showing good command of his sinker and sweeper heading into the fourth, though less so with his cutter. Promising outfielder Braden Montgomery made a great play to rob LaMonte Wade Jr. of a potential home run, but nobody in the stadium moved after a violent Taylor Trammell connection, who sent the ball out through the very outfield he patrols, in the top of the fifth. Every Houston run came off solo shots.

Flame-throwing Jordan Hicks came on in relief of Fedde and, though he got tangled up—or perhaps played it safe—with baseball's home run leader, Las Tunas native Yordan Álvarez, he ultimately got the job done and handed things off to lefty Newcomb. Incidentally, Chicago's poor strategy of burning through their replay challenges early in the game came back to bite the new pitcher, who might otherwise have fought a bad call from the home-plate umpire that led to a walk for Wade Jr., the start of a serious threat he ultimately managed to snuff out. It's easy to second-guess from the outside, but once Antonacci—Antonacci again—opened the bottom of the sixth with a double to right, I thought Blanco had no business still being on the mound. Sure enough, Vargas hammered a fastball that stayed up and sent it flying nearly 400 feet out to left field. 5-3, South Siders, who would go on to face Enyel de los Santos, a native of San Pedro de Macorís.

Grant Taylor contuvo sin contratiempos a los Astros en la séptima, lo cual fue correspondido con otro jonrón salido del bate de Chase Meidroth. Tras dos nuevos hits de unos White Sox en gracia, el alto mando visitante le aplicó la grúa al lanzador dominicano, pero el relevista Bryan King tampoco pudo hacer justicia, entre su descontrol y el acierto sureño, y permitió tres nuevas carreras limpias ante Murakami —que celebró en grande su Bobblehead Day— y el batallador Andrew Benintendi. 9-3. Grant Taylor shut down the Astros without incident in the seventh, which was answered with another home run, the sixth of the afternoon—three for each side—this one off the bat of Chase Meidroth. After two more hits from a White Sox team riding a hot streak, Houston's front office pulled the plug on their Dominican pitcher, but reliever Bryan King couldn't right the ship either, and between his own wildness and Chicago's sharp hitting, he allowed three more earned runs off Murakami—celebrating his Bobblehead Day in style—and the ever-battling Andrew Benintendi. 9-3. The bleeding continued the following inning against Miguel Ullola's offerings. His countryman Junior Pérez also went yard with a man on, and the scoring closed out with—who else—Murakami's second homer, a back-to-back shot, giving him six RBIs on the day all by himself. Final: 12-3 for these White Sox, who are looking every bit as disciplined as they are fun to watch. Here's hoping they go far.
