Exploring Moscow's Most colorful Souvenir Market

Izmailovsky Market is one of my favorite markets in Moscow, Russia. This market specializes in selling a wide variety of souvenirs. From wooden Matryoshka dolls to amber trinkets, from vintage Soviet cameras to an assortment of fur and military hats — you can find them all here.

The vendors at this market are also very friendly. Most of them are people from Central Asia, especially from Kyrgyzstan. Many of these Kyrgyz vendors are Muslims. At least on the six occasions I’ve visited this market, I always encountered Muslim traders (including the woman in this photo).

Like most souvenir markets, many of the vendors here can speak foreign languages, even a little Indonesian — usually limited to greetings and stating prices. But there are a few who are quite fluent.

The woman in this photo can also speak a little Indonesian. She, for example, is able to state prices in Indonesian. This shows how popular this market has become among Indonesians. Many Indonesian students living in Russia who offer private city tours often bring their guests here for souvenir hunting.

One of the charms of Izmailovsky Market is not just the souvenirs, but also its unique atmosphere. The market is designed in the style of an old Russian kremlin, with colorful wooden towers and cobblestone walkways that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a fairy tale. It’s a perfect spot not only for shopping but also for taking photos.

The market is busiest on weekends, especially during summer. Visitors from all over the world gather here, creating a lively, multicultural atmosphere. Aside from souvenirs, there are stalls selling traditional Russian snacks, street food, and sometimes even street performers adding to the vibrant scene.

For anyone visiting Moscow, Izmailovsky Market is a must-visit destination.
