FOMO - Noob ventures into NFT

Some of my friends on Hive will know how stupid I am when it comes to the crypto world, which to be honest isn't too far off from the me in the real world. Just the other day, I figured I'd take a look at Axie, and transferred some ETH to my ronin wallet. Etherscan.io said the transaction was successful but half an hour later the funds still hadn't appeared in my ronin wallet. Turns out I didn't use the bridge!! How was I supposed to know??? Luckily the funds are in my eth wallet!!

Back to NFT.

Recently @martibis has been working on an NFT project called https://256art.com/ which in his words is "Art consisting of a maximum of 256 blocks, as a nod to the underlining cryptographic hash function for Bitcoin: SHA256. And most importantly, art that celebrates the ideals of blockchain technology and takes us back to where it started."

The sale of the artwork started last week but with art not being my forte I hadn't really paid much attention to it. That's unless @martibis's Twitter notifications bugs me comes up on my phone, which was quite frequent. When the guy puts his passion into something, you can smell it a mile away.

A few days after the launch started, things really went through the roof and nearly three quarters of the artwork were sold in a day! I was pondering whether I should jump on board as I always miss the boat on all this stuff. The eth gas fee was about the same amount as the mint cost and that held me back. Whilst I was still thinking..... 55 minutes later @martibis said all 4096 pieces were sold out!!!!! I don't know if I was relieved I didn't have to make the decision anymore or upset because I'd missed the boat again. Either way, I was definitely happy for @martibis to pull this off on his own.

Turns out there's a silver lining and I didn't miss the boat afterall. Martibis did a tweet earlier on to gift a piece each to three Hive users who commented on it. Remember I said his tweets always bugs me? It's a good thing it does. I commented on it and bagged myself a piece.

And here's my first NFT!!! Thanks @martibis.

I've been trying to understand more about this project this week as both art and crypto has always been alien to me. Aesthetic wise, I'm really warming to all this as each of the 4096 pieces, down to background, border and the blocks are unique. And there are certain traits that make one piece rarer than another. Plus I just found out the other day that each of these art work plays their own piece of music! That is incredibly awesome, so in order to avoid FOMO I snapped up another piece!

Since starting on Steemit Hive over four years ago, bar a little withdrawal, I have kept all my earnings on the chain and powered up the majority of it. I think it's time to move forward and start to diverse my crypto portfolio. I've heard of people making massive returns on defi, Splinterlands, Axie etc but based on my track record and my pea size brain, I wouldn't know where to start, and that's not without trying!!!!

Investing in NFT is a bit easier and more passive, as long as I like a piece, I would consider buying it. Perhaps I'm investing with my heart and not my mind - not a good thing to do when you're investing, I know. But there's more to it. Investment is also about investing in people. I know many people support projects like Leo Finance because of who's behind it, and that's the same reason for me to start my crypto investment into NFT and the 256art project.

I have my eyes on a few more pieces from the collection, but those are rarer and thus more expensive. With limited funds and quite a lot of options available, I'm currently back to where I was a week ago. But this time, instead of should I or shouldn't I, the question is which one?

I didn't know about Martibis's project but based on your post it's not really for me as I am not really eager to pay those high gas fees. I'm not that rich to be able to afford those fees.

I'm a bit surprised to find out that art and crypto had been alien to you to be honest. However, never too late 🙂

I guess it's just a matter of factoring in those gas fees with the investment cost, same as when you buy stocks and shares, there are transaction charges. But yeah, they can be quite a deterrent especially when the transaction value is small. All the crypto I have comes from my participation on the chain, so I'm just ploughing back in what I've earned, will see how it pans out.

That's a cool NFT. Its a neat idea behind the project and I like that style or art. Congratulations on your first NFT!

I am feeling a bit of fomo too and thinking of getting something. I am no critic but they look cool. How does it feel to have some digital art work, Is it a different experience than real art?

I've never owned any artwork before - I guess buying posters to sick on my bedroom wall when I was a teenager doesn't count ^_^ I'm learning about the project so I guess the more I understand it the better I feel, and its actually quite fun to look at them and try to find a pattern or object embedded in the blocks.

@steeve is not only rare but Legendary.., no need for ETH and it's silly fees either!

I am exactly the opposite, I don't have a clue, what constitutes art and I certainly don't have an eye for it but regarding games (Splinterlands will always be the most important crypto-game for me, but there will be others, I venture to play and earn) I have a knack for. And that is the awesome part of crypto. There is a niche to earn for everyone :o). I wish you success in diversifying.

I hear those into Splinterlands have done very very well, so you have made a very good choice. My airdrop is worth about $90, and considering I don't play, I'm pretty pleased with that diversification!!!!

There's a lot to learn everyday, and I've paid my fair share of tuition fee in the process!!
