Mug collection stories

(Edited)

When @mipiano said she was hosting a Mug Collection in her Hive Collection community I didn't think I'd have anything to contribute as I gave away a lot of my possessions in the past few years when I was moving around. I rummaged through my cupboards today and luckily found a few, with stories attached of course. "Things" may be dead but they never really are as they can be bought back to life with stories. Here are my Mug Stories.

Little Twin Star

Little Twin Star is my favourite Sanrio character and this mug is part of my Litle Twin Star collection. The mug comes with a lid to keep the drink warm. It's an Asian thing, we like hot drinks, it's good for health 😊. There used to be a ceramic spoon as well and you can keep the spoon inside the mug with the lid on. That's why there's a little opening in the lid. Sadly the spoon broke recently. I've had this mug for years and normally I tend not to use things from my collection unless necessary. This is my daily use mug now, a happy mug makes a happy person!

Villeroy & Boch one big mug

This used to be my daily use mug for well over 10 years. I like a big mug of tea and this is perfect. This year I gradually noticed my tea gets colder quicker, which is quite odd given I've used it for years. Blame it on climate change 😁. As I mentioned earlier on, I like a hot drink, so this year I've retired my loyal V&B mug,and replaced it with my happy Little Twin Star mug.

Villeroy & Boch three small mug

For those who haven't heard of Villeroy & Boch before, they're a well known European ceramic company that dates back to nearly 300 years ago. They make things from dinnerware, to tiles and bathroom items like washbasin, toilets and bath. Their products aren't cheap but luckily I used to live near their factory outlet many years ago. Occasionally I would pop in and pick up some very good deals such as these mugs, and the big one above. They're part of a range that illustrates a colourful countryside life. I deliberately bought all different illustrations as they are all very bright and colourful. Two of these mugs have a strainers for when I drink loose leaf two, and there's also a lid to keep my tea nice and warm 😆

My husband's mugs

This used to be my husband's daily use mug. It's from his alma mater, the London School of Economics in UK. He's had it for many years and it's showing its age from the chip on the rim. Now he uses the other mug shown below.

This mug has got some sort of famous chinese painting on it, and hubby's name on the other side with what it means. I think these type of name meaning mugs are quite cheesy but they're great as gifts. I can't remember who gifted this to him. Not me!!

Christmas mugs

These are the newest additions to my mug collection, not that I am actually building a collection. I got these from my recent trip to Germany. I've been using them a lot last month but now they're in storage. See you in 11 month's time!

Visitors mugs

Next up are these are box standard practical mugs great for visitors. The different colours ensures people won't mix up their drinks.

I particularly like these two sets that stack up in a holder, it saves a lot of space and I can easily move them around.

Mugs from friends

And finally, I have some mugs which are very dear to me as they were gifted to me from good friends.

Last Christmas @zirochka sent me this from Ukraine. It's a relatively short mug not big enough to drink my tea, but perfect for drinking hot water in winter. (Do you notice the recurring hot drink theme 🙂?) The small cup encourages me to be more active at home, forcing me to get up and put the kettle on more often. I'm sure @zirochka didn't have this in mind when she got this mug, but sometimes things just fall in place naturally.

And last but not the least this is my Marimekko teapot and mug set, gifted to me by two of my old university friends. We used to share a house together back in those days and had a fun year that year. A few years ago, they came to visit me in Taiwan. It was like a girls holiday without their husbands and kids, and we had a great few days together. Frankly speaking, before I got this I'd never heard of Marimekko but it was the favourite brand of one of the girls. I can understand why. It's so colourful and happy, and the Nordic minimalistic design is so chic. This is the only teapot I have at home and it sits beautifully on the table. It gives me a perfect excuse to use the beautiful mugs more often.

Wow! I count 24 mugs at home! I didn't realise I had that many at home, nor did I think a simple mug can evoke quite a lot of yesteryear memories.

Oh my, the Villeroy & Boch mugs are so, but so beautiful. The Christmas mugs from Germany are very cool but that Marimekko teapot and mug set is just wonderful!!! <3

I also like the one @zirochka sent you, especially as it was a gift from a Hive friend 😍

How happy I am now seeing the mug collections arriving at Hive 🤗

I've had the Villeroy & Boch for ages and I'm glad they're still with me, connecting me to the past.

Great initiative allowing me to dig out some nice memories

And thank you too, as although I had the idea already in my mind exactly for mugs, we were on our little trip with ph and mipiano junior. But the sign was when you recommended the community to Kathryn, after seeing the mugs. It could not be just a coincidence 😅

We have plenty of mugs. We actually got rid of some. We had a few Doctor Who and Marvel ones that were probably presents. We also have some nice ones from a Stoke pottery that match some crockery we bought for when we have visitors.

I think everyone has a favourite mug.

Some of the English pottery stuff from Stoke are really nice, and many of the factories have so much history as well. I got a set that used to belong to my mum and dad, it's quite outdated but I reckon they'll come back in fashion in a few decades time

I like the mugs for friends, especially the storage rack for them 😊

It's amazing right? I didn't think to count mine I'm sure the number is high. Some I found were like opening up a time capsule of memories. I probably could open up a cafe, haha. Take care you have some nice ones 👍

Mug seems to be the type of objects everyone have at home but don't really give them much thought. But every mug has its own background and story

Those are some pretty collections, it's the kind that you don't want to use and just display them in a rack while looking at them with a wide smile, and with a thought "Should I add more?" (≧▽≦). But 24 mug, have you ever use all of them? Like even once?

The first Little Twin Star is my daily use mug. In fact, if you read my post you'll see I use them quite often

Beautiful collection! I particularly love the stacked up mugs. The designs are beautiful, and the rack idea is great for storage.

The visitor mugs are a great idea too

The rack is certainly a very good idea and I can easily retrieve from deep inside the cupboard when my guests arrive.

You thought you had nothing to share? But... this little collection you have is beautiful. I have a favorite, of course. Can you guess which one it is? I'll reward you if you guess. 🤣

Btw, I think you should build your mug collection this year, I mean, add new ones with meaningful stories behind them... I wonder how many you'll manage to collect by December 31, 2024. 🤔

I have a favorite, of course. Can you guess which one it is?

That's so difficult 😕... the Villeroy & Boch big mug?

I think I will run out of spaces if I build another collection. I already have one from many years ago that I need to put out on display when I have time

No, it's the one zirochka gave you. I was born there.

I wonder what collection it is that has left you without space... hahahahaha... we have to call the collector lady to start an investigation. 😅

Sometimes we go through phases on Hive just like in real life. One day we may love eating something or doing something, and then other days we totally don't feel like it. I think that's perfectly ok.

Just do whatever makes you happy, even if it's staying away from Hive for a period because you need a break. Don't let it get to you and stress you out. You need to stay happy and calm now, and that means doing whatever you want. Indulge yourself, and if that means eating a big box of chocolate, go for it!!!! 🍬🍬🍬

Take care!

It's too much! I only have a few haha. I bought a mug for one of my favorite TV series characters and I still use it. Let's enjoy our coffees!

That's a mighty fine collection of mugs. We have some nice ones too, my wife in particular likes to collect them and we are both massive tea drinkers, so it helps to be swimming in cups! :) The bigger the cup (or mug as we say) the better too, but not too big, we have a couple of huge Guinness mugs which are that little bit too big! But those ones are better than too small a mug, which can happen sometimes at hotels and the like, where you get a thimble full of tea!

You'd need 3 teabags for the Guinness mugs! I used to put two in my big Villoroy & Boch one, now I just use one and let it swim in my tea to keep it nice and strong. All my family think I'm a big odd 🙃

The dainty little cups when you go for posh afternoon teas? Yeah, they're a bit on the small side to wash down the victoria sponge.

Maybe you can post about your mug collection as well, it will be interesting to see what e everyone has.

By the way, a little request on behalf of Pinmapple... I wonder if you would mind taking a look at our latest proposal and voting for it if you think it's worthwhile. It's funded at the moment but we may lose the BT vote so need to get as much support as possible to fill the void when that happens. Thanks a lot!
