Redemption Roasters

Cafés have become more of a lifestyle hangout nowadays, elevating a cup of humble coffee to the next level via its surroundings. Be it a chic cup and spoon, the design and packaging of the beans, the chunky industrial look of the coffee machine that you'd wish for your kitchen at home, to the stylish decor of the actual café where you can immerse yourself for a couple of hours. All this reflects the image that the café owner wants to portray.

Often, cafés also have a story or message they want to deliver. Promoting fair trade coffee and supporting small coffee bean farmers has been a big thing in recent years. Others work with a meaningful ethos, such as one I went to recently called Redemption Roasters.

On the face of it, this places looks like a normal stylish café in London. Many small tables for two were dotted around, great for an intimate chit chat catch up over coffee with a friend. Most only sat one person though, accompanied with their laptop, a common sight in many cafés nowadays.

What made this café special, and I don't know if you noticed its name and logo, is how it operates - redemption. Nothing to do with religious before you wonder.

The café, actually there are more than one in the company, trains prison inmates as barrista and coffee roasters and help them find jobs when they leave prison. The idea is that retraining inmates with new skills can help them integrate back into society easier and stop them from reoffending again. Many are employed in one of the Redemption Roasters or the company help them to find jobs in the industry. Furthermore, all the coffee beans used in the cafe is roasted inside the prison. I didn't know about this before I came, all I was looking for was a nice place for my afternoon coffee. Finding a café that does such great work is a big bonus.

The cafe had a back garden outside and it was perfect to sit outdoors in central London but away from the buzz.

The back garden was actually at a lower level than the front of the building, and as I came down the stairs, I saw this really interesting feature. It was all sorts of random objects stuck on the wall and painted over in white. The shapes of the different objects gave the wall a really nice texture and I couldn't resist not taking a selfie. Judging by the mirror, I'm sure I'm not the first nor will be the last to do this.

It was late afternoon when I arrived and the garden closes an hour before the café. I moved back inside to finish my coffee and sat by the window watching the world go by.

A guy sat outside with his drawing pad and pencil. I don't have an ounce of art inside me, so am always mesmerized by people drawing. Then he pulled out his set of pencils, that was really impressive!

Another guy walked by armed with some leaflets. Or posters? He sat down and the two started chatting. Not sure about what. Maybe the older guy just wanted to talk to someone. They say people living in big cities are a lot colder and distant, and everything is about me me me. I wonder how true is that, or are they just waiting to be redeemed? Food for thought.

you look sad/perplexed/ confused as to which coffee to dink first!!!!! 😂

What a brilliant idea to give someone a second chance in life, sort of place I would visit, but I really detest the taste of coffee.

I love that wall decor they have going on, its kind of like an organic cyberpunk alien-esque thing going on.

I haven't seen any Prison Beans style of thing up here in the frozen wastes of the north but its an excellent idea,I hope they expand out a bit

The wall's very simple to create actually but very effective. I might even have a go myself sometime!

It would be great if they can roll this out across the country or for other coffee chains to follow suite, a bit like what Timpson are doing

Picking name of this coffee shop is very unique and different. I try think, have a cup of coffee in the afternoon is a form of redemption for the hard day?

Yes, the name of the café is very fitting for what they are doing.

Coffee always gives the best, when doing tasks, and relaxing with colleagues, also relatives. I think it's very special with the coffee cup.

That's a really cool concept. I'm sure that it is hard to find work and to be given a chance when one gets out of prison. Its great that some businesses are specifically working with former inmates. Very cool. The coffees look good too!

I liked the idea as well, something so simple that can save a lot of people. And I was very impressed with latte art, very nicely done, almost didn't want to drink the coffee!

Yeah the coffee looks amazing. The weird busy wall art is cool as well.

Hello Pauline, wow! This is interesting.
I do believe in rehabilitation. People do the crime, pay the time, and should be given a fair chance back into society; Having such an initiative fosters real brotherhood to prevent a repeat cycle. Also, a coffee environment is simply the perfect conduit for that, so I hope that they'll expand this concept.
I love the name of the shop, the wall decor, and an outdoor back garden, is perfect summertime venue, and atmospheric in general;)

Reoffending rates are over 30% in UK, so anything that can help get that down is good. The guys working there were ever so nice and polite, not that I was studying them nor anything, they were just like any normal lads. Btw, did you know Timpson does something similar as well? I read it in the newspaper a few years ago

Maybe it takes a lot of work to set it up within the prisons and to coordination everything, but its definitely a nice concept

Would love to experience the cafe scene there. I barely seen people drawing like that guy or random strangers suddenly approaching with leaflets or just finding someone to chat. All I see often see is always people on the phone, taking selfies, or in front of the laptop 😄

I dunno if it's an Asian, if a stranger suddenly approaches you, you'd think they're up to no good and want to scam you, which could be true a lot of times, but often it could be just a friendly encounter. It's a pity that humanity has come to this level and we can't trust strangers. A bit like Hive in some way tbh

My heart warmed at the thought that someone out there is willing to give those who will probably find it really tough to get back into life a chance to get closer to that place.

Love that wall, if my country wasn't so dusty I would so have a feature wall just like that in my house. And that it is all in an off-white shade - very cool.

I too think people in cities are not as warm. But I find if you do make the effort to be friendly they warm right up.
And sounds like what happened with them :D
