Fighting Friggin Useless Politicians!!! Fabulous Food to the Rescue

(Edited)

So, almost three months later, the damage caused by the destructive storms, has still not been resolved.
We could face more disaster should there be unexpected rain; something very possible according to the weather experts as climate change is being felt in many parts of the world.

Part of the road is still standing, but very slowly being undermined; a disaster waiting to happen!
Our friends are still living in a rental and the friendly landlord changed almost overnight into a rather nasty piece of work. Their home has been cleared of mud, but no rebuilding has commenced as the insurance assessors have only now sent their reports to the insurance company. Our direct neighbours are also waiting and the threat of a car rolling down the hill towards their home is very real as one cannot see in the dark...no street lights there nor proper demarcation where the road has washed away!

To say we are disillusioned with our ward councillor is an understatement! She who is from our country's official opposition is simply not doing her job, which comes with a fat salary by the way! If this is the kind of person who represents the face of the opposition, then I am very afraid for the future of our country!

She ignores emails, and does not know her constituents as she calls the complex on our road an old age home; obviously has never been there, as they are young families with children!

I will not go into too much detail, except to say she supposedly assists where she can be seen, and I'll let you into a secret. I attended a training session when hubby and I were activists for this political party, stupidly thinking we could help the community. This statement was made:

You must take on projects that will give us maximum publicity.

Well, that's when my blinkers fell off, and what makes me so angry is that our local ward councillor is doing exactly that - sitting in public places, ensuring photographs are taken, supposedly assisting people who need to get 'proof of addresses' while her ward is literally falling apart!

Do I really want to spend my retirement having to deal with unethical politicians and pay taxes for services we're not getting?

But...enough of friggin politicians and onto fabulous comfort food that doesn't reek like some people!

A peek at the past week's menu

That woman from high up in the Cape mountains, our Silver Flower is to blame for my experiments with sourdough breads and rolls, and I now find myself unable to eat any commercial bread.
The smell of the bread baking is irresistible, and I do not get any reflux when I eat this bread; or rather tiny breadrolls in this instance.

A quick stir-fry for Saturday night - forget about takeaway food!

The good old standby when one of our young guests is back mid-week - Roast Chicken, Potato wedges and vegetables with delicious gravy made with pan juices.

A lazy dinner of Noodles with a Bolognaise Sauce topped with cheese sauce & extra cheese.

20220630_183329.jpg

A spicy Lamb Curry to warm one's cockles on a cold winter's night.

A comforting dessert - Apple Crumble, and yes @shadowspub, I imagine this is what you call Apple Crisp? A crumble topping made with butter, brown sugar, oats, flour & crushed nuts or coconut as I used here.

There are some perks to being semi-retired; one is having coffee in bed with a rusk, and then basking in the sun for breakfast as the house is still cold from the night before.

So what silliness did we get involved with this week?

Hubby's spectacles were next to him, with the sun casting a small sharp light onto his leg, something he was unaware of until he felt a sharp sting on his leg; the refracted light from the glass burnt him.
So us two oldies started experimenting - could one start a fire with this light? I ran to fetch a piece of paper, and sure enough, the refracted light from the spectacles burnt a hole in the paper. The same thing happened using a magnifying glass!
We were like little kids, literally playing with fire.

I thought that would be a great trick to play on someone who has been particularly nasty; can you imagine the news headline - 'Councillor suffers first-degree burns during a public campaign, cause of fire remains a mystery.'
That's wicked of me to have a thought like that, not so!

Anyhow, I hope you all have a fabulous rest-of-the-week, and I hope that your politicians still understand the word ethics, as that seems to be lacking here in our country today!

Urgh! It never ends, Lizelle. Next week, they have scheduled a community meeting to discuss crime village issues. I have been to so many and with no result, that I am seriously thinking that I won't go...

It really is so disappointing so I don't blame you. Our previous councillor was proactive by addressing real issues successfully. He did his publicity stunts as that goes with the job, but that is not where it should end! Here in Ethekwini their monthly salary package totals R70k per month, and that figure was given by a reliable source!
Now they're protesting about fuel prices which is a pointless campaign, as there is no way the government will change the cost structure. Fuel prices are even higher in NZ & Australia!
When I was in that 'training session' where we were told to tackle projects that will attract publicity, I was dumbfounded and disillusioned! That politician now is part of the hierarchy.
I can just imagine how you feel; they are experts at empty talk and of course nothing happens as it's a load of work bringing about change!
We want to flee to an island but could be swallowed by the rising ocean - no place to hide!

That was a great read!

Putting the sucky political aspect aside, I had a good chuckle at your shenanigans, burning paper with glasses 😁

That news title, omg, if only, haha!

I'm going to share this on ListNerds.

Thanks for sharing @therneau! Yep, we had a good chuckle when we started playing with fire, that little piece of paper quite by chance ended up looking like a nasty facemask😆

That food, I should not read your posts at 9 in the morning when I have not had any breakfast.
Two old oldies though, that got me laughing!

OH the diabolical Lizelle ... death by eyeglasses

I love sourdough bread although don't have the patience to make the starter and do it myself. There is a bakery in the Toronto area I order from. If I order by Sunday, they bake and ship it on Wednesday and I receive it on Thursday. I usually get enough to avoid shipping charges and freeze some.

Yes, the apple crumble is what we call apple crisp.

I like the ring of that @shadowspub, sounds like something from an Agatha Christie novel.😆
I battled with my starter & my first 2 loaves were like rocks (would have made good weapons come to think of it) 😅
I should do the same when passing by the bakery that makes it, but this German method works really well!
Have a great Thursday @shadowspub 🤗

I've made starter and had some success I just didn't keep it going. My niece makes some wonderful sourdough bread. She sent me some at Christmas.

If you've got a method that works..then that is what you need to roll with.

PYPT today .. should keep me busy for a while.

It's sad to say, but politicians don't think about the welfare of their voters, here in Venezuela it's the same, it's not known who is worse, the opposition or the government.

On the other hand, your evil thoughts made me laugh. LOL!

It's really sad that many politicians abuse their power, and ever since I discovered that our opposition is not much better, I really feel there's not much hope for our country, sad to say!
But, we need to keep our sense of humour not so.😅
My heart goes out to the people of your country as well!
