Healing Coastal Garden

avatar
(Edited)

I will take you on a walk through a unique garden at Glenmore Sands, on the South Coast of Kwazulu Natal where we took a small breakaway recently from all the hustle and bustle.

We strolled among the gardens, enjoyed invigorating walks on the beach, and climbed on some rocks, but as some of us wore a silver-crown, we avoided the massive rocks that fishermen love and which I SHARED with the Pinmapple Community recently.
My focus was more on the beach and a little of the history in that post, so today I will share the special plants in this garden which is a stone's throw from the ocean.
Many of these plants are used in natural medicine, and some are used for making nifty items.

Features such as massive boulders, succulents, and some indigenous plants add to the beauty of these gardens.
I will share the image below, that I showed to the Pinmapple Community, just to give you an idea of how cleverly the landscaping was done to maintain the natural ecology of the environment.

All the plants, except for the Foxtail Agave and Nasturtiums, are indigenous to South Africa, as far as I could learn.

The White Paint Brush grows well in shady spots and this one looks like a wreath on the rocks; I took a closer look to see if someone had picked it and arranged it there, but was wrong as it actually is growing there on the boulder. Apparently, traditional healers use it to treat coughs.

All the plants growing here are hardy and do not require any nurturing once they've grown strong enough. They all thrive in our subtropical climate and love the sun. Many of the plants grow on the boulders, such as this Foxtail Agave, and you will see why they're called by that name when you see the graceful arching flower stalks.

20220718_165417.jpg

20220718_165454.jpg

A close-up look reveals many flowers with seed pods that will produce more plants. This plant is closely related to the Blue Agave that grows in the arid Karoo and is used to make tequila.

20220719_095627.jpg

The Wild Banana or Strelitzia Nicolai is a tall evergreen plant, a close relation to the Crane Flower which I will show you a little later. It grows prolifically along the south coast and makes an effective wind barrier as it withstands the salty coastal winds.
Locals dry out the leaf stalks and use them to make rope for building huts. The young seeds can be eaten and apparently are very tasty, something I only learned recently, so I will try them next time we're at the coast.

20220718_170959.jpg

They make a beautiful subtropical curtain for the glorious sunrises on the east coast of Africa.
As it is winter, the sun only rises around 6:45, quite a decent time to get up and wait for the spectacle; unlike summertime when the sun rises way too early for me!

20220719_065659.jpg

20220719_070007.jpg

Next to the swimming pool, we find the beautiful Strelitzia, also known as a Crane Flower or Bird of Paradise; its orange flowers tell you where the name comes from. These flowers and leaves are perfect for flower arrangements, as they last a long time in water - this one is looking a bit battered from the strong coastal winds.

20220718_165427.jpg

The image below was taken in our garden here at home, with the leaves more elongated and the flower really looking like a bird with its long beak - it even has eyes ;)

Plants which are vital in dune rehabilitation can be seen all along the coastline. These are Sour figs and their sap often is used medicinally for sore throats, skin conditions, and for cuts and burns.

20220718_165958.jpg

One sees lush clumps of Nasturtiums growing wildly, mine never grow as well as these.
The edible flowers and leaves are great in salads and on sandwiches as well, have a nice bite to them, and tastes similar to watercress. It often is called nature's antibiotic and is said to relieve and heal sore throats, something I can attest to. I picked a small posy for a salad.

I'll end off with the Aloe Arborescens which grows all over South Africa. A fully-grown plant can reach a height of around three meters, its spiky leaves are razor-sharp but it produces the most beautiful reddish-orange flowers.
The gel from the leaves has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits and is used for treating skin irritations, cuts, burns, and healing of wounds.

Saying goodnight to the gardens at Glenmore Sands with a massive Aloe right outside our patio, all lit, up and the lights from the neighbouring Munster glittering in the distance.

Afterthought - To all those still working in the corporate world, don't think that retirement and being a Silver Blogger means you'll have all the time in the world to sit and blog to your heart's content! Being semi-retired and running a BnB from home has many perks, but also means that people think you're on duty 24/7, so with all the interruptions, I'm a day late for #wednesdaywalk, therefore I'm sharing my walk here with my fellow #silverbloggers who will understand the pros and cons of retirement!

We have those "agaves" in our driveway. Do you know that they flower only once and die? They take years to flower, though.

We have some plants they call century plants that flower once and die. They are massive and grow a stalk that looks like a huge asparagus before they die. The stalk is around 30 feet high! I wonder if they are also agave.

I didn't know that, but they make enough babies to continue their lineage so to speak, they are beautiful!
We have a couple of plants that we got from our Springbok radio friend who passed away recently and wondered why it has not flowered, look forward to that!

Yes, they do make lots of babies. It takes about 9 months to a year from bud to full flower and, then dying back. We had a pair on either side of our gates. They were quite a spectacle not to mention conversation point! lol

I love all the photos! They look really amazing - quite a sight to see I am sure! I like the Agave foxtails! I have never heard of those - really interesting! The flowers are all quite pretty as well. I heard previously that bird of paradise have 7 "birds" inside of them that come out before the flower dies. Thanks for sharing all the cool photos! Have a great day!

That's an interesting fact about the bird of paradise! The flowers last a very long time.
I'm looking forward to our foxtail agaves to show their tails but as Fiona said, it takes a long while.
Nice seeing you @apanamamama 🤗

I sent your post to my friend here who is from South Africa. It's always cool to see a little of what she used to see when they lived there.

Good day my friend, that was a lovely post. It's amazing how those plants are growing right out of the rock. The bird of paradise is so pretty and very unusual looking.
So glad you were able to get away for a bit, one would think as a retired person you can fly away whenever the mood hits you, not so! Life still needs attention.

All we can do is strive to be happy.
Enjoy the day.

They really chose the right plants for that environment. We have quite a lot of them growing in our garden but it's not as striking as this garden filled with boulders.
It's so good getting away from home but we cannot do it as often as we'd like to, because of running the bnb. Places like this is a real balm to the soul!
Nice seeing you my friend🥰

Hey @lizelle, in a pickle right now, my baby sister is very sick, she has been in my care for 28 years. She had a severe spinal cord injury from a car accident when she was just 29y/o. I know you will understand when I say, it's so hard to let go, I love her so much, but the big thing is, I made a promise to my mom when she was dying, I would always take care of De.
I have done my best; I pray I have the strength to continue.
peace my friend

Hi @farm-mom, my heart breaks for you my friend ❤️
It must be so difficult for you and @thebigsweed as I know it will affect both of you!
You cannot do this alone and really need to get help, otherwise your own health will suffer and then you can't help anyone.
We didn't know which way to turn with my Mom but the best way for us was to get the 2 caregivers through an agency my brother heard of, so we split the cost. It was such a blessing having these 2 ladies as my back started playing up & lack of sleep as well!
A good nursing home is very costly here in our country, but we also knew Mom did not have long to go & would have been very disoriented in a new environment at her age.
I'm sure your Mom would not want you to do this to the detriment of your own health.
My prayers are that you find a way that will be best for all of you.🙏🏻💔

Each time we venture away from home we tend to learn something new, knowledge is powerful when it comes to plants around the home, or close by.

Large boulder rocks make a feature complete with the right type of plants placed, this is gardening without worry about water, wind, sea spray.

Well photographed and learned something new as always.

It's pretty clear to me that South Africa is paradise (physically). I am in awe of the perfection of it's landscape.😌

What a beautiful walk this is Lizelle :) I enjoyed every bit of it and the plants you've shown us through your amazing photos are all fascinating. The close up shot of the Foxtail Agave got me really interested.

The wild Banana looks extraordinary. The natives of Borneo use a lot of these medicinal plants for healing.

Absolutely stunning... Very sculptural and especially beautiful with the coastal backdrop. Like a painting! Don't forget to use #hivegarden or #gardening on a post like this so I can pick it up with @gardenhive. Was just saying to @sjarvie5 how great it is to get inspiration from these kinds of gardens (and I know she'll love the aloe too).

I love the way the plants grow between the rocks. The more you show the place where you were resting a few days ago, the more idyllic the place looks to me. I'm glad you were able to go. Hopefully, soon you can make another getaway from your so-called retirement life which is probably busier now than before, hehe.
By the way, I love the birds of paradise, those flowers are gorgeous and we have plenty of them here too.
Have a lovely weekend, Lizzie 🤗

What a beautiful place, thanks for taking us on a walk there. The climate is very similar to where I live in Arizona so I recognize the plants which is fun!

Just to share, I am familiar with some of the plants you showed in your post. And I am happy to know that these plants don't only exist in our country.
