Medley of Food & History on a Cold & Blustery Day

I've been singing lamenting the blues ever since our return from our Drakensberg breakaway with the fledglings; just long enough to make us miss them all over again, and of course we're also missing the beauty and tranquility of the mountains and the streams!

But, so is life but we really count our blessings that we are able to get away and enjoy special times like that!

Back to real life here at Lily's Cottage where we've made our own kind of tranquility on the outskirts of the city.

Fresh ingredients were used to make a delicious thick vegetable soup and wholemeal bread; one regular loaf and one small loaf just in time for lunch on an unexpectedly cold day even though we're supposed to be into summer already!

The young guests have to be fed and the usual roast chicken dinner always makes an appearance at least once a week; marinated in fresh lemon juice, rosemary, and thyme from the garden, and roasted on high heat to get a crispy skin but tender and juicy meat, always is a hit with everyone!

Packed lunches are not one of my favourites, but thankfully the leftover roast chicken came in handy and made delicious Chicken Mayo Rolls.

When the day runs away with me, as it often does, good old pasta comes to the rescue. I used a fusilli pasta and a bolognese sauce topped with an extra layer of tomato, onion & basil sauce plus loads of cheese; sure to satisfy the family and our current guest who is not a fussy eater.

The weather really has been so unpredictable, starts off cold and miserable, only to turn into a lovely summer's day later on; or the other way around.

The latter was the case on the day we decided to take 90-year-old Mom Lily for a drive to the beachfront.

By the time we got there, the wind was howling and it was freezing cold. I always blame those Cape winds that is blown our way by @fionasfavourites and @papilloncharity, over a thousand kilometres away mind you! I don't know just how they manage that!

The palm trees were being pushed to one side with some fishing rods leaning against it; the fisherman obviously gave up as wind and fishing are not a good mix!

Some beach-goers determined to enjoy themselves were taking a walk on one of the many jettys, with some relative calm returning every so often; but the sun stayed hidden behind those clouds!

Hundreds of pigeons are scattered all over the city, quite a problem in the built-up areas as they mess up the buildings with many pigeon droppings. Here on the grassy patch in front of the beach sand, they're having a feast; many of the older folk who live in the area, still feed them every day.

The gracious Addington Children's Hospital once was the only hospital on the African continent that cared solely for children, but has been standing empty for years. It apparently is undergoing restoration which may have been halted by Covid lockdowns.
I learned that Sir Elton John in 2017 donated R50 million to what will be the new KZN Children’s Hospital; will this project ever be completed despite this generous donation?

We were saddened to see the dereliction of the once gracious Natal Command Building, but happy to hear that the long-awaited plans by Anant Singh for this site to be turned into a film studio that will include exclusive hotels, apartments, restaurants as well as a shopping mall, will finally happen as all the legalities about land zoning, etc have been ironed out.

Back at home, calm had returned and we enjoyed seeing the shrubs changing with the seasons.

Last but not least, look what eventually arrived via our postal service, which has almost come to a halt; I think some four months after it had been mailed?
Totally unscathed and still in perfect condition, so I say thank you to our postal service for at least ensuring my book arrived in one piece although it took forever!

All I can say is, thank you from the bottom of my heart @ericvancewalton, I am sooo enjoying this stunning book of beautiful poetry!

Quoting from the poem Reflection by Eric Vance Walton is a piece of wisdom I'd like to leave with you is something we should all strive for in our everyday life, and that is to become the best version of ourselves such that we spread that onto others:

Your greatest goal
is to find who
it is you really are,
your greatest legacy
is left by displaying
that truth, unabashedly,
for all to see.

Bring a predatory bird there. It would scare them away. Or hunt them down and eat them. I have a female Harris's hawk. Sometimes I give her pigeons to eat.

Not taking responsibility for the Cape Doctor, I am not! Stamps foot 🤣

The winds have been awful this year and, looking at the forecast, the tomorrow's going to be dreadful. Messes with the washing... The farmers and those who know these things say that we need these winds if we are to have winter rain...

Speaking of wind, the Husband is doing a spec for a carport: his builder friend told him to up the gauge of the hurricane clips and some other bits. Because od the really strong winds we get in our little hollow. Summer and winter.

Your guests really are fortunate that you enjoy cooking!

The food looks so delicious, Lizelle! I just ate breakfast and I'm hungry again after seeing those pictures. Yay! It finally arrived. I hope you enjoy the poetry. It was a miracle that it arrived in that condition after being enroute for so long.

It is a miracle it arrived at all! I honestly thought it had been burnt in the riots we had a couple of months ago! Our postal service is not as good as it used to be, but I'm so thankful it came! Your poetry is full of wisdom, kindness and beautiful prose! I will treasure it forever as I do your other books.
The soup and homemade bread is my favourite, I'd love to send some your way once winter sets in😉
Nice seeing you here my friend!

We experience 4 seasons in 1 day here of late, the weather seems to be just as upside down as the world currently is! But....I much prefer the cooler weather than Durban summers that can get awfully hot and humid!
I'll make mac & cheese if you ever visit Durbs😉🌻
