Retirement Ain't Wot it used t'be!

You're in for a shock if you think you'll one day be sailing away on a slow boat to nowhere when you finally say goodbye to formal employment!

According to the younger generation, retirees have way more hours in the day, so chores like fetching grandkids from school, helping them with homework and doing chores like little maintenance jobs, and picking up stuff, now fall on my generation.

Some of us got cold feet when we heard stories from Granpops, and Grandmas, telling us how they run around all day since retiring!
We are the ones who are still very much active in some kind of paying work or side hustle; many of us stepped out of our comfort zone, doing the things we always wanted to do, but were afraid to!

I now run our BnB, as most of my friends know, and love this new job, even though it was quite a challenge and a load of work setting it up as a registered business. We initially only ran it as an Airbnb, which was much easier, but a local BnB owner 'kindly' warned me that we could be fined if we were not registered with our local authority! She unknowingly did me a favour as we're now busier than ever.

Now that everything is in place, and our staff is well trained, we do take short breaks from time to time.

However, our upcoming trip to our son in the Netherlands is going to be a much, much longer break.
We finally picked up our Visas today, and can't wait, although we're already worried about our adopted 'grandchild' Poe, who is becoming very attached to us.
Our staff is very good with him, so I imagine when we do get back, Poe is going to be very aloof for quite a while! He's usually fast asleep in front of the TV, just like we two silvers sometimes do:)

Poe often sleeps with his one little paw covering his eye, just like a human being!

Today was a hectic day; despite many physio sessions, my shoulder's still VERY painful at night.
Our first stop was at a well-recommended orthopedic surgeon who suspects a rotator cuff problem. He assured me he will not do any surgery before our trip, but will be able to help with other treatment options.
We've been trying to get fit and walked quite a bit today! The walk to the radiologists was quite stiff, I had x-rays, but tomorrow afternoon it's back for an ultrasound, so I'll likely only know the verdict on Monday.

The views of the harbour when riding to the hospital is just amazing, my poor cell phone simply does not do justice to it!

Durban in winter still is very green, with many leafy suburbs, nothing like the inner city that's become a real dump!

Then it was off to pick up the much-wanted Visa, after which we were both starving as we literally had to run out of the house to get to my early appointment.

We discovered a laidback little coffee shop, The Coffee Tree, where we sat under the trees inside a pergola of Jasmine. I can just imagine the scent when it's in full bloom!
The Aloes are real show-offs during the winter months; the plant itself has many healing properties.

Their small menu had some really divine simple offerings.
The hubs went for a Smoked Salmon, Cream Cheese & Scrambled Egg on a Bagle, while I chose a Brie & Fig Croissant topped with caramelized Pecan Nuts; both absolutely yum!

Days like this make me wonder how we got everything done when we were stuck in the office, back in the days before retirement!

Gotta love smoked salmon and scrambled eggs.

Retirement is a weird one, over here we heard so many stories about retirement, bottom line is that it is different for everyone.

That's for sure, I invited 2 old friends to join us midweek for my b-day lunch and both could not take time off from work, still in formal employment.
Our last class reunion however showed just how different this new phase in life is for each individual.
I looove Smoked Salmon but my sweet tooth couldn't resist the caramelized nuts🙈
Have a great Friday Ed!

According to the younger generation, retirees have way more hours in the day, so chores like fetching grandkids from school, helping them with homework and doing chores like little maintenance jobs, and picking up stuff, now fall on my generation.

But of course! Not only do you have 36 hours a day to spend on someone else's chores, you have absolutely no hobbies or interests of your own that you might want to spend your time on, and no need for sleep. Right? 😹

Have a great time in the Netherlands! If you get a chance, try a dish of stompf and bacon. It's basically mashed potatoes with chopped sauerkraut mixed in, and some crispy fried bacon either on the side or also mixed in. Wonderful in a bowl, even better in a wrap with some lettuce and red onions. 😋

Haha, that's what they all think not so!
I will definitely look out for stompf & bacon, it sounds like a good mix. My son spoke of having a sauerkraut dish, perhaps the same?
Have a great Friday @treefrognada 🌻

I know! How did we squeeze full time (or more in my case) jobs, homework, sports, music lessons and playdates with all the other stuff we still do today?! But it looks like you had a bit of fun there. I'm so sorry about your shoulder! I hope that gets fixed really soon.

Thanks @owasco, this shoulder has not been kind to me!
How did you manage squeezing in your singing/acting career in as well?
But, when one does something you enjoy, time doesn't really feature, although it must have been quite a juggling act!
Have a great Friday @owasco 🌻

I sometimes ask myself the same question, how I used to do when I worked in an office schedule?

I hope that shoulder gets better Lizzie so you'll be fit for the trip. Good to hear that the visas have been sorted. And Poe will be fine, maybe when you come back he will ignore you a little bit but in a short time he will be back looking for cuddles, hehe.

Have a great weekend, Lizzie 🤗

Hehe. I do hope for some time alone when I eventually retire😁. I don’t know about the many hours in a day yet. I’m still very “young” and 24 hours doesn’t seem enough. Poe is adorable. I’ll get a cat at some point in my life. I like their aloof nature. Hehe

I never was a cat person but Poe has converted me😉 He can be extremely aloof especially if we've been out all day, ignores us for a while but then becomes the playful loving Poe again❤
Yep time is a scarce commodity @deraaa!

Secret to the success of the BnB was taking a leap of faith, training helpers which takes time to get everything the way you want it to be, well done on both.

Glad to read you have your Visa and now to start planning to pack, a first and most exciting adventure being able to visit your son soon.

Go well, stay well and look after the shoulder !LUV
