Smooth or Stormy Waters?

Was 2022 kind to you and are you sad it's ending, or are you just as glad as I am to see the back end of it?

Backtrack 2022

The year started on a sad note on 1 January 2022 when my little Mom Lily had her first seizure, and left us a couple of weeks later to go to another world, one I believe is beautiful beyond our comprehension.

In April climate change first reared its ugly head with flooding, landslides that flattened buildings, washed away roads and bridges, and more sadly took the lives of people and animals.
Then we had a frightening weather phenomenon where we thought aliens had landed as a heat burst hit a large part of our region with the hottest and strongest winds I've ever experienced; a major substation exploded and left our entire city in darkness.

Sadly dear friends of ours lost their home in the landslides and are still trying to pick up the pieces, literally!

The good thing is that my close family survived these storms. However, it's a bittersweet New Year's Eve, as our oldest son and his sweet gal will become citizens of the Netherlands next year, so this will be their last Old Year's Day as South Africans! Dad and sons are chatting and braaing (BBQ'ing) while the two gals are busily finishing off the last business of 2022 - Hive and BnB admin in my instance.

We've inherited their cat Poe, who has slowly been acclimatizing to his new home and is now being let out of the house under supervision.
Pining to be let loose in the garden, while I'm worried about my garden birds, but he has a collar with a bell, so the birds will be warned when Poe is out hunting!
Reflections of the garden in the window, make Poe look like he is part of a painting.

Thank You Team Silver Bloggers!

I thank the wonderful Silver Bloggers members who regularly share their life experiences with us in our community of pre-millennials.
We have the pick of the crop in the super duper team who work tirelessly and faithfully behind the scenes, despite the many blows of life - @fionasfavourites our highly skilled chief-Admin, our two awesome moderators @coquicoin and @tengolotodo, as well as our IT Disco boffin @mondoshawan whose eagle eyes keeps us up to speed with what's happening.

Messy visitors are like smelly socks...

Cannot wait to throw them out!
Back to what's been keeping me away from Hive - our BnB.
I fell in love with this job from the day our first guests arrived, but goodness me, these December holidays have been beyond crazy! I am totally convinced that Covid lockdowns affected many holidaymakers; some guests have been extremely messy, making our job a real pain in the butt, or rather caused aches and pains everywhere as it's been up to us two silvers to do the cleaning and changeovers, no fun I can assure you!
But, that's how it goes in the hospitality industry, you simply do not know who or what you're getting.
I've revised our house rules and will be dealing with these kinds of guests from here on -

  • Refundable cleaning fees - you mess, your money stays with us!
  • Dishwashing - excessive dishes come at a cost per day

Fortunately, we've had some super considerate guests who've made up for this unexpected influx of messy ones!

Family Breakfasts

The family still has to eat and while they've been great in helping by buying prepacked meals, breakfast time mostly is my department, so I will share a couple of eggy breakfasts with you.
I still made time to play in the kitchen early morning, but made a mess one morning when all my carefully diced onions and spring onions flew across the entire kitchen floor! I was so annoyed with myself as I had to run for the broom, take the pan off the stovetop and start from scratch again.

We have to end the year off on a sweet note so how about a slice of toast and Strawberry Jam?

Oh, what a year it's been for you! I hope 2023 is a little more smooth. You're still making me hungry with your food photos! I wish you and your family a very Happy New Year. We were exposed to Covid on Christmas and will be spending our New Year in front of the tele. Here's to a much better 2023 for us all!

Funny how we had the Omicron outbreak last Christmas & all ended up getting it here at home, but it really wasn't bad at all. I hope you and your wife enjoy the evening relaxing at home, actually is a nice change once in a while from the usual new year's eve get-togethers! And I hope you escape the vrus as well.
Wishing both of you a very good 2023🎊🎉💖

Each variant of the virus does seem to be getting milder at least. My symptoms are showing now -- body aches, chills, headache, coughing but I'm still testing negative and the symptoms are like a mild flu. There's no way I don't have it but I've read if you have a strong immune response this is all you may get and you may continue to test negative. Thank you Lizelle! If I'm doing my timezone conversion correctly it's already 2023 in SA. Happy 2023 to you all!

Was 2022 kind to you and are you sad it's ending, or are you just as glad as I am to see the back end of it?

Both. 2022 was good for me/us, and I am happy to see the end of it in relatively good health (I live with multiple disabilities), and I am happy to be able to welcome 2023, and hopefully many other years in the future.

Happy New Year.

Have a nice day and have a nice weekend.
All the best. Greetings and much love from Hungary.

Thank you so much @xplosive, you are a brave man to be so positive despite the disabilities. Wishing you a very good 2023, we just need to live life day by day and appreciate the little miracles around us. Take care, hugs all the way from South Africa 🤗

I'm also glad this year is over. I wish you all the best for the coming year, Lizzie. May it be full of good things for you.

And those breakfasts all look delicious, but I seriously want to take a bite right now of that toast with jam. 😋
Happy New Year!
🤗🤗😘🥂

PS: Poe is a gorgeous cat 😻

What an eventful year it's been for you as well Eli, I'm so glad that it ends on a good note!
Poe certainly is growing on us, he's beautiful, very aloof but starting to explore the whole house and allowed to venture outside under supervision till he's used to his new home.
Wishing you and your dear family a very good new year, may 2023 be kind to all of us xxx

You are such a hard worker and a trooper. The past year with the disasters in your country were bad. Then you kept going with your own business while Hiving and helping your neighbours. You really are a special being. I wish there were a whole lot more of you. Your food is always a pleasure to look at.

The cat really does look like a painting. I love it.

Hope you have a well deserved break in every way. All the very best to you now and the coming year.😊

Sweet Carolyn, thank you for those kind words, it was a very difficult year indeed but we survived!
I echo all those sentiments, and admire how you hold your head high and make the best of what life throws your way - even when you had to put up with nutmeg wafting from every cooking pot a long while ago😉And you still keep on producing the most amazing plantbased food!
You deserve the very best my friend, here's to a very good 2023, may all your dreams come true!
