Special Memories of 53 on Winchester

Overwhelmed is how I felt when we walked into the stunning 53 on Winchester; we were the only diners in this large lounge/restaurant-cum-function venue.

My young bestie Josh called the morning after my big birthday to invite us to dinner at one of their favourite restaurants.

No need to drive, we're fetching you!

There are benefits once the silver hairs multiply, as those who care, feel the need to protect one:)

It felt quite surreal to find a restaurant where the gates have to be opened especially for you, and once inside, the parking lot is virtually empty!

The Winchester is located on the border of two suburbs west of the city of Durban; Westville and Reservoir Hills; and has 5 different function venues, each with its own unique stylish decor.

I was hooked as soon as I saw James Dean, Nelson Mandela, and paintings of jazz musicians at the entrance.

Isn't he gorgeous, Rebel Without a Cause, a talented actor whose life came to a tragic end in 1955. I was only 2 at the time, but my youngest aunt and uncle both were totally smitten by him. I still have a collection of James Dean books that belonged to my late uncle.

My favourite quote by Nelson Mandela, or Madiba as he was fondly called, is this:

No person is born hating another because of skin colour, background or his religion...

Why can we not all live in harmony, without judging another?

This painting was in the ladies restroom.

The attention to detail was visible wherever we walked, and as there was only one couple dining, we could walk the walk and snap away to our heart's content!

Hubby in a playful mood, laughing at us ladies waltzing around the room taking pics :)

I simply loved their large collection of paintings, so you will see quite a number of them!

The intimate bar area is adjacent to the restaurant, and also boasts a number of paintings, and stylish decor.

We had a window table with a 180-degree view to the west of Durban. I took a couple of images reflecting what was inside in the windows.
The first image is looking out at the flickering lights. My friend's hubby is an optometrist and explained that the flickering of the lights in the distance is because the rays passing through the varying atmosphere causes it to reflact the light, and our brains register it as twinkling. The explanation was more complex but that was my simple understanding of it.
That's his ethereal reflection in the first image.

The second one shows the comfy seating area inside the restaurant while the third one is looking out the window at a wrought iron gazebo, with the couches reflecting in the window.

Typical dishes at this superb venue includes Seafood Curry, creamy Chicken & Prawn Curry, Butter Chicken, Lamb Curry Rogan Josh, Lamb vindaloo, Chicken Tikka, Lamb, Chicken or Veg Briyani, Paneer Makani, served with Basmati Rice, Naan bread, or Roti.
We ordered a little platter of Samoosas and Spring Rolls.

For mains, I chose a Lamb Curry Rogan Josh, while hubby chose a creamy Chicken & Prawn curry. Our friends had a hot Prawn Curry and Chicken Tikka.

Heart page break.png

Of course, my friend ordered a surprise miniature birthday cheesecake with one candle, while everyone sang 'Happy Birthday' to me, the perfect end to a really enjoyable evening at a stunning venue I would recommend to anyone visiting Durban.

They have a superb Sunday buffet, where a starter, a main and a dessert only costs R200 per head, excellent value for money.
Be sure to book, however, or you may be disappointed :)

The 70the birthday continues, I had 2 other small get-togethers with special friends who could not make the actual birthday party, and I've been told there are more to come, especially when we get to our son in the Netherlands late July.

We learned today that by pure co-incidence my brother who is flying back to Khazakstan via Istanbul, will be on the same flight; a big comfort to us, as he's familiar with the airport, and wants to show us around.

I was a tad apprehensive as both sons were worried about the old folks getting lost in the airport, but now will have my little brother there to hold my hand, and both sons are heaving a sigh of relief!

The boot is on the other foot now; it's their turn to worry about Mom and Dad getting lost, or being abducted ;)

Happy 70th @lizelle! Those are some amazing friends to treat you to such a fine evening. That is such an elegant establishment. It is so well decorated and the paintings are fabulous. I can imagine the curry was fantastic as I just love curry and haven't had good authentic curry in a long time. I wish you safe travels and look forward to seeing your reports from them.

Thank you so much @coinjoe, my friends are the most awesome couple, I'm really blessed!
As for the curries, they were absolutely divine. Some of it is cooked in a tandoori oven which takes the taste to another level, authentic curries for sure. They had dishes from North and South India, we'll definitely go back there😋

This restaurant was an absolute feast for the eyes, and the tastebuds as well! My friend and her hubby have a way of finding gems like this, it was a real privilege being spoilt like this.
I hope you're keeping well @apanamamama :)

What a marvellous post Lizelle. Why was the restaurant empty?

Hi Christine, Perhaps because they focus more on functions? One has to book to dine there, especially for the Sunday buffets which are very popular. I'd never heard of them until my friends took us there, their curries are divine, they use tandoori ovens.
It was marvelous!

It sure looks good - and very inviting - will definitely make a plan if we visit SA - How far is your place from Durban?

We're only 17km from the city centre, it's a western suburb of Durban.
I do hope to meet you or Eden, we could always meet somewhere or we may be able to accommodate you, who knows 😉

Please send me the location so I can check it out on Google maps. I also hope that we will meet one day. Eden has a new song coming out at the end of the month on East Coast Radio. Lee is in Johannesburg at the moment and talking about going to Cape Town for a bit
