The Mad Month of May

avatar
(Edited)

You read right, a crazy Mad Month of May it certainly was, although at times it rightfully was a very Merry Month of May!

We had a second devastating storm where we once again had to pick up the pieces and those not affected, banded together and helped where they could.

My birthday came and went, no big party, but we spent a lovely day walking the Point with special friends, and other special friends popping in before and after the big day, so it lasted a long while.

Something many of us have been doing here in Durban, is filling in insurance forms - we had booking cancelations and a leaning fence after the second deluge - and my friend who lost half her home and belongings, came to scan her forms as their pc & printer was also buried in mud, so when she called, I quickly threw together Cheese Puffs, a real lifesaver when you need to make something quick and easy.

I'll share this recipe with all my Silver Blogger friends & hope the guys surprise their ladies with a batch of these for afternoon tea!

While I was trying to surprize my friend with these muffins, she arrived with a big gift bag filled with all my favourite treats & eats plus a pair of gorgeous winter PJs; so I had another unexpected little birthday celebration, and we nearly forgot to do her scanning with all the nattering!
She also brought Lemon Cake and Nutty Choc Chip Shortbread, both divine!

It was food, food and more food again with the young guys from the training centre, but these bookings are like gold, as not many want to come to Durban for a holiday after seeing the scary mudslides everywhere; so I happily cook for them with very little variation on the theme, as I choose the easiest way out. It doesn't matter though, as they mostly stay for two-week periods but go home for the weekend. I however make sure there's not a repeat of the same food week after week, as that would be very boring for us!

Good comfort food for a cold winter night; many will laugh when I tell you what we call cold here in Durban - around 14°C!

Cottage Pie, Sausages & Mash, Crumbed Chicken fillets, Chips & Coleslaw and a spicy Chicken Curry
on the menu for this week.

Does it look like I'm a retiree? You won't when you see the number of plates I have to dish up some nights! But, I enjoy meeting new people, and most of them are awesome, plus it stops me from vegetating in front of the television!

You're seeing so much food here, but that's what running a BnB entails for many of the guests, although I only provide a self-service continental breakfast with supplies in their rooms as I'm not a morning person!

Breakfast this morning was omelettes for hubby and I only, and we could have a lazy start to the day!

We received good and sad news this week.

We were overjoyed when my nephew who lives in Minnesota received his Captain's pips; Mom Lily would have been so proud of him!

Heart page break.png

I shared the sad news about a mutual friend of ours who passed away - a much loved gentle soul.
Kevan, with an a, was a well-known and knowledgeable Durban Transport historian as well as Springbok Radio lover and public speaker.
We watched his very touching memorial service on YouTube, with all the pomp and ceremony he would have approved of; a lone Scottish piper, white doves flying into the sky, and many many tributes, The minister said it sounded like he was doing the service of a celeb!

Gone but never forgotten!

R.I.P. Kevan

Your guests are the luckiest people ever. Does retirement mean, you now work harder? I guess it is rewarding.

Sorry to hear about the continuing disasters. I hope it will subside so people can rebuild again.

Happy Belated Birthday my friend!

Thank you do much my friend, the big 7 is looming🙈 Sounds terrible but I don't feel it!
Some days it really is hard work but we can at least take time off now and then and take it easy in the morning.
We're into our dry season now so hope it stays that way!
Enjoy your weekend Carolyn xxx

Thank you @itsostylish!
Yep the weather really slapped us with a whammy!
We love going down the coast, either stay at Glenmore Beach or Caribbean Estates right on the old border with Transkei.
We were looking at retiring properly at Pennington, but both our sons live in Joburg, so...we're debating which way to go now, we'll see what the future holds!
Thank you for the birthday wishes 🤗

Lucky fish, it's the property next to TO Strand where we used to camp annually for 3 week fishing holidays when I was growing up! It's beautiful there, enjoy!

❤️😊🤔
My brother has donated his stand to me. I have to sell my house, first, then build. I think that this is going to be harder than I imagined at the onset. But, still, I’m super excited to go back to live at the seaside.
You have been so kind to your neighbours, they must adore you ❤️😊🤔
Keep well

I love when birthdays seem to go on forever. Those cheesy/onion muffins look delish and so does the rest of the food.

The food looks amazing! Extra perks of using your BnB!

I hope things get easier in KZN with the bad weather. Did your building sustain any damages?

Thank you @zakludick! Fortunately we were spared as we have retainings walls that have a good stormwater system & extra reinforcement, but our neighbour's granny cottage was totally flattened by a mudslide & friends of ours next door to them, lost half their home. It was beyond scary when those mudslides took place, sounded like an explosion followed by thunder & then hearing them screaming was the worst. Our friends got out just in time!

Oh no! I am glad you guys are alright but I feel for the other people.

I have heard some horror stories of those floods over that. People losing homes and sometimes, losing people. It is just terrible.

Is someone keeping an eye on that kind of thing now so they can evacuate should it happen again?

It was horrendous, our friends got out ogmd their house just in time. The young man in the granny cottage next door fortunately was awake so made it out in time as he felt the bed move & then the sound of thunder, that's the noise the mudslide makes. We heard the screaming of our neighbours & thought they were trapped.
A friend of ours lost a young friend in a mudslide.
Many of us have put our important documents into a container just in case. Our friends lost many of their important documents!
At least nowadays we keep digital records of most things.
Nothing has been done in our road! The school bank is on state land but we've seen on aerial photography the possible cause in this instance is that they did not make provision for stormwater runoff from the hardened surface. We will have to get the ward councillor involved as they will have to reinstate the bank according to engineering practices & ensure they now install a stormwater system for the water runoff from the action soccer field. The
Municipality have to rebuild the road once they've made provision for the banks to be secured. So...it's going to be a long process as nothing works here in KZN, you're lucky to live in the Cape!

More civil engineers are needed!

Awww man. I am so sorry to hear all of this!

How is it right now? Are things getting better or are more floods coming?

Hive seems to be doing quite well compared to other tokens in crypto so that all bodes well for the future when it will all go up.
Oh dear your neighbours and fences, let's hope those particular ones are a bit better from here on in.
Have a jolly jolly June Lizzie:)

@lizelle Wow - the month has been quite a roller coaster for you. I like the spirit in which you take the good and the bad in stride. It is inspiring. My only complaint is that you also keep posting these yummy food preparations of yours and whenever I see them, I get hungry! I have to start watching my weight if I keep reading your blogs. LOL

LOL, as long as you only have a virtual bite you'll be ok😉
I think everyone in Durban & surrounds are suffering from PTSD following the terrifying storms and the aftermath of April & then again in May! The news of our special friend was really a shock.
Thank you for your kind words @vm2904 🤗
