Winter Solstice Fragrant Spiced Golden Milk

20230621_154049.jpg

Steaming, spicy, golden milk sweetened with pure Maple Syrup, a sweet gift from my nephew in Minnesota, is pure indulgence to be enjoyed on this longest night of the year in the Southern Hemisphere. Creamy, delicious, comforting, and filled with health benefits.

What gives Golden Milk its bright yellow colour?

The answer is Turmeric, one of nature's best anti-inflammatories!

Fresh Turmeric root naturally is preferable, and that is what I used in my Golden Milk, but one can also use a good organic Turmeric Powder, which is easier to obtain, and less messy.
My fingers were a bright Yellow for quite a while the last time I used fresh Turmeric, so rather wear gloves when using fresh Turmeric.

I added fresh Ginger root to give it a delicious spicy taste. Again, you can use powdered Ginger, but it's just not the same!

I usually grate extra Turmeric and Ginger to store in a bottle in the refrigerator where it will last for at least 2 days.

The addition of Cinnamon bark, and Cardamon Pods adds subtle flavour; and with these, you can also use the powdered form, but only add a touch, otherwise it will overpower the delicate flavours of the fragrant Golden Milk.

I almost forgot to add Peppercorns which greatly enhances the curcumin absorption and adds an extra touch of spiciness.

Golden Milk is delicious, its anti-inflammatory properties are great for sore throats and respiratory infections, arthritis, it aids digestion, and has a host of other health benefits.

Recipe

I've given approximate quantities, it really is up to you how much to use, but go easy on the Cardamon pods or it could overpower the other flavours.

  • 500ml Milk (coconut or Dairy)
  • Approx 2 tablespoons grated Turmeric
  • 2 tablespoons grated Ginger
  • 5 Cardamon Pods
  • 2 stick Cinnamon Bark
  • Pure Maple Syrup or Honey to sweeten

Place all into a pot, let it soak a little, then bring to a slow boil while stirring, and remove from heat.

Give it a good stir, strain it into cups, and sweeten to taste. My hubby is a diabetic, so I add sweetener to his Golden Milk.

In addition to all of its health benefits, Golden Milk's bright yellow color even looks uplifting and "perky!"😋

Keep warm and enjoy the Winter solstice @lizelle while those of us over on the Northern Hemisphere celebrate the Summer solstice today! 🌎🌐🌍

This looks wonderful ❤️ I will celebrate this special day with tea and a candle.

Funny, I never thought about this is Winter Solstice on the other corner of earth!

This looks so special, and we will give it a spin as soon as my stomach has healed. They have "cauterized" lesions in my stomach and forbidden me to drink or eat anything spicy. Not fair !LOLZ

I've only used powdered turmeric so far, but am wondering, isn't the taste overpowering? I know I used to add a bit to yogurt and found it really strong. THis looks delish though :O

This drink in my area is usually said to be herbal medicine, it's just that it doesn't use milk. I think this is something really delicious!

This recipe seems great to me, since in addition to turmeric, you incorporate other spices. Definitely a very special Golden Milk. Thank you for bringing these great recipes to the community. Hugs @lizelle
