The Creative Process / El Proceso Creativo

Step 1: The Line-art / Paso 1: El Line-art

Everything started with a very clean line-art using purple ink over a neutral gray background. My main goal here was to establish the composition, placing the main female figure in the center and planning the depth of the other figures drowning around her.

Todo empezó con un boceto de líneas púrpuras muy limpio sobre un fondo gris. El objetivo principal aquí era establecer la composición, ubicando a la chica en el centro y planificando la profundidad de las otras figuras que se van hundiendo a su alrededor.

Step 2: Blocking Shadows / Paso 2: Bloqueo de Sombras

Next, I jumped straight into blocking the main shadows using dense brushstrokes in dark brown tones. This is where the concept of "emptiness" began to take shape, as I covered the faces of the secondary figures to represent the heavy weight of oblivion.

Luego, me lancé de cabeza a manchar y bloquear las primeras sombras con pinceladas súper densas en tonos marrones oscuros. Aquí fue donde la idea del "vacío" empezó a tomar forma, cubriendo los rostros de las figuras secundarias para reflejar el peso del olvido.

Step 3: Color Palette / Paso 3: Paleta de Colores

Things got interesting when I introduced the final color palette. I chose a vibrant ochre for the dress and deep reddish tones for the hair, creating a strong contrast against the absolute darkness that was swallowing the surrounding silhouettes.

Step 4: Atmospheric Inmersion / Paso 4: Inmersión Atmosférica

The real atmosphere came together when I erased the flat background and painted a deep, realistic sea. This dark water completely enveloped the scene, forcing the perspective and giving the whole piece a vibe of immersion and mystery.

La verdadera atmósfera llegó cuando borré ese fondo plano y pinté un mar súper profundo y realista. Esta agua oscura envolvió por completo la escena, forzando la perspectiva y dándole a todo una vibra de inmersión y misterio.

Step 5: The Emptiness and the Flowers / Paso 5: El Vacío y las Flores

This was the turning point where I connected directly with Johnston's essence. I opened an organic, pitch-black void right where the main character's face should be. At the same time, I added sunflowers and wild blossoms in her hands to create a jarring clash between desolation and life.

Este fue el punto clave donde conecté directo con la esencia de Johnston. Abrí un vacío negro y orgánico en el rostro de la protagonista y, al mismo tiempo, añadí girasoles y flores en sus manos para crear un choque entre la desolación y la vida.

To finish the piece, I polished the water details by adding bright white foam, splashes, and reflections in the foreground. Finally, I added a flock of birds flying toward the horizon, closing the narrative of this emotional transit that goes from losing your identity to ultimate liberation. I hope you like it!

Para terminar la obra, pulí los detalles del agua con espuma blanca brillante, salpicaduras y reflejos en el primer plano.
