SPS.DAO - Upgrade your cards or lose rewards. Is this card your next best investment?

SPS.DAO - Upgrade your cards or lose rewards. Is this card your next best investment.png

What could be one of the best Splinterlands investments? It's a tough question, and one, if you had a magic answer, you'd end up a very rich gamer! But - the more thought about this question, the more I came to quite an unexpected answer -

Let me start the answer then, with a focus on this SPS.DAO proposal:
"Adjust Rewards Based on Card Level"

This is a proposal that many users would be familiar with, and essentially what it will do is adjust the rewards you receive based on the card levels you play. If you play a maxed deck for your league, you lose nothing - but if you play low level cards, you will quickly find that your rewards slip away.

It actually rather surprised me the extent to which this proposal got support, in truth, I actually voted against it - yeah OK, possibly some self-interest there given I don't have a fully upgraded deck!

image.png

That said, while my deck isn't fully upgraded, it certainly isn't bad, and I find I can compete in GOLD League competitively enough - not at the top of the league, but I don't need to rent to be able to get my daily chests each day, and that, perhaps, is a win!

But - looking closely at my deck, there is one particular group of cards that stands out to me as potential gems. I used to own them at Level 1 - and, my gut feeling is, a lot of people would only have them at level 1. Of course, I'm talking about those friendly meat-shields, the FIENDS!!

Splinters Animated.gif

Now, the truth is, these FIENDS are not going to be the most amazing card in your line-up, but equally, you need them in your line-up. If nothing else, to throw at the back of a line to slow down a sneak attack, or out front to rob your opponent of a chance to throw a hit on you and protect your cards longer.

Each of the FIENDS costs 0 mana to play in a battke, and they each hold 1 attack. You can see that I currently have upgraded my LIFE and EARTH fiend, but I can tell you, I'll be planning to upgrade my SCORCH and TORRENT FIEND in the next week.

image.png

Let's check the market out:
You'll notice across the board that all of the FIENDS will set you back around 5 bucks; the FIRE FIEND a little cheaper, the LIFE FIEND a little more pricey. But, have a look at supply: with between only 65 and 86 of the FIENDS available for purchase, it certainly wouldn't take much for the market for each of these cards to skyrocket - afterall, if you're regularly playing this card, as most people do, you don't want to give rewards back.

There's also an element to this equation of total maximum supply, as there are less than 18,000 of each of the FIENDS available, my feeling is that this number will be drastically reduced as FIENDS will need to be combined in order to maximise profits.

image.png

Needless to say then, I think these cards are worth a buy - and so, in making this post, I started to put my money where my mouth is. I just purchased another 3 TORRENT FIENDS - in total, this gives me 4 of this card, meaning I will still need two more cards to maximise this card to Level 3 - but let me tell you, I'll be planning on buying it at the next available opportunity.

image.png

OK - so in putting this post together, it occurred to me I had some swap.hive - so the money-where-mouth continues and I just picked up the final 2 TORRENT FIENDS I needed to upgrade mine to L3. But, you can already see then, with those I purchased and combined, the market continues to trend higher:

image.png

What this tells me is, if the next person comes along and wants to buy 5 - well, they'll be paying $5.40 for their 5th, and then the market continues to drop away, there are a couple around $5.50 and $5.58 - and then it jumps to $5.90!

I guess what I'm saying is, I can see demand for this card picking up significantly, and the prices going with it - and that's why I thought I would share that I think this card could well be worth the investment and that it should appreciate in value. Next week then, I'll buy my ICE FIENDS and hope I'll have gotten in before they become unaffordable!

Now - let's see the utility of the FIENDS in action? To do so, here's a battle I played earlier:
In this battle, both my opponent and I play a FIEND as the rear-guard, and have a strategy where we intend URAEUS to rip through the back-line. And, want to know what changed the course of this battle? The FIENDS -

image.png

In the case of this battle, it took a few rounds, but eventually I was able to get around my opponent's line up - with my FIEND slowing down my opponent's URAEUS, with my MERDALI GUARDIAN using her ARMOUR RESTORE to make him quite the obstacle for my opponent's URAEUS to hit. Without that FIEND as my rear-guard, I would have lost. You can explore the battle further with this link: https://splinterlands.com/?p=battle&id=sl_2a913904fcc00d6917ea0891b524c910

But - exploring that battle further, in light of the sps.dao, you'll see that I had:
Maxed Summoner
Maxed Legendary Lord Aranthius
Maxed RARE Merdalii Guardian
Maxed EPIC Uraeus

But, I would have lost rewards due to only having a Level 1 Torrent Fiend.
So my purchasing of 5 of these cards as I wrote this post is actually rather powerful then, as it will be an investment in my future earnings! I encourage you all to consider which cards you might need to max out, and how this might be a card to invest in. (Just please don't buy FIRE FIENDS until I'm able to grab another five, thanks!)

I don't like the proposal either as I don't have fully upgraded decks either. In a way, it makes me feel like playing the game might be a dying matter and that you need money if you want to get decent rewards. It just doesn't make sense to me why they would want to make the barrier to entry even higher as that would make more new users leave.

They are good cards to buy more, in my opinion, common and rare cards with a lot of use will be more needed in the compositions and will soon have a greater price appreciation. I'm investing in the most basic cards (although I already have some fiends).
Thanks for sharing.

Heya lipe; it's always so hard to know what will be more valuable or not. I'm in a mad-rush at the moment to buy my cards to max level for gold league; figuring, prices will probably do their biggest spike as soon as the proposal is introduced. Any idea when that will be?

The fiends were always either L1 or MAX. In-between they are not worth it. The proposal is fine, except for fiends and chickens!

As a gold league player, I was happy with all Level 1s, but I now have 3 of them at Level 3, will sort out the other next week. My good fortune, not owning a chicken ;)

OK, I just checked them out at Level 4 - never paid attention to their L4 stats as a consequence of only ever popping into Diamond for a day here or there. Now the new plan, get them to Level 4!
