When Your Place Is All Over The Head

Let me tell you, some days I find go really quickly and I get home and I’m all energy (well, you know, as far as that can be the case). While other days, I feel grind me down and I’m exhausted by knock off. Last Friday was one of those days, where I just felt ‘done’.

On my drive home from work, I couldn’t decide if I was hungry or thirsty, or just moody or grumpy – but I decided to stop off at the grocery store, right near my work. I was initially going to just go through a petrol station and buy something – but figured that I’d pay half the price for the inconvenience of going to a larger shop.

I made up my mind then, that I was going to buy a coffee flavoured milk. Something heavy enough that it was a substitute for eating, and being a drink – hitting the possible thirst at the root of all my problems.

In Australia, we have heaps of different flavoured milk brands available to us – and, more flavours in each range than you can imagine. Some sound delicious and blend smooth caramels, while others sound weird – honeycomb mint – who is buying something sounding so gross, and is it orange or green? I’m not convinced about the artificial colours that would go into that one.

But – here’s a fun fact about me: I am not particularly loyal to any brand, and I usually buy what’s on special – be it clothing, or food items – I’m usually a price shopper. However, when it comes to flavoured milk, I insist on DARE Iced Coffees – and, at different times, I’ve sampled them all. They have their standard espresso, and their double shot espresso; they have a mocha, and a toffee nut. They list goes on – there’s about 8 or 9 options – and the think is, they’re all delicious. On that day though, only one would hit the right spot. The DARE Iced Mocha – and let’s face it, coffee and chocolate is always going to be the right combination.

Now imagine this – walking into the shopping centre – it’s not nice. This is one of the dingiest and darkest neighbourhood shopping centres ever, and having just weaved my way through the carpark to avoid pot-holes, I really don’t have a lot to say about the centre beyond, ‘Get through their quickly’. Heading into the little IGA is always a bit of a bleak affair too, most of the shopping centres in Australia are pristine – well lit up and with a welcoming ambiance. This one welcomes you with marked down fruit which should have been binned two weeks ago! When you go inside, it always feels dirty and the whole place has an odd artificial yellow light cast over it. Boxes are on the ground, and staff look as interested in working there as a monkey is introduced in a Mathematics textbook!

But – luckily, I’ve been here before. I know exactly which direction to go – go straight, turn left, turn right – and there’s the fridges. And – it seemed relief was in sight – my mood was brightening, and then it got even better. Would you believe it, my milk was on sale! The crowd, if there was one, would be going wild at seeing that little yellow sticker! I grabbed my milk and darted to the checkout – and again through the dinginess of the centre, out into the rain.

A bleak picture, right? But this bleakness would not overpower me, I had my elixir and I made it to my car. And then I stopped and readied myself. You see – the best part of the DARE flavoured milk experience is in the opening of the bottle – and the foam of the milk, and it’s all about that first mouthful.

Let me describe it like this: absolute bliss.

The MOCHA milk has a very smooth taste, and it goes down well. It is the perfect blend of both chocolate and coffee, and after a long day, it absolutely hits the right spot – especially when you don’t really want a hot coffee, and you’re not sure what you want, but you know you NEED something!

And you know what?
It turns out the advertising for this little milk is absolutely correct, as I continued on my way home (another 46 minutes in the car) feeling far better than I did before the drink!
