I live in the city of portharcourt, the capital of Rivers state in Nigeria. Portharcourt is one of the biggest and richest cities in the country, it is also one of the most developed and populated too. Rivers State bears the slogan "Treasure Base of the Nation" as most of the country's revenue is being generated from the sale of crude that is deposited in their soil.

Although no more, it was once a crime hub and was also known for vices. It housed a lot of militant groups who rose up to fight the government who they claimed paid little attention to the welfare, concerns and the plights of their people who owned the lands from where the crude was taken.

From this militant groups was the proliferation of several other smaller cult groups, and this also resulted in the rise in crime and unrest in the state. At that time, there was so much fear and uncertainty, especially at nights and everyone became extremely careful.

These issues of crime and vices are no more and there is relative peace and calm now. The environment is very much secure and night life have once again been revived.

Although it is obvious that things are good now, a lot of people still find it difficult to come to terms with this new reality. They still dwell in the old bad days and still live in so much fear and nervousness. Most of these fearful ones are the rich and the middle class, most especially the middle class as they live close to the poor and also around areas where crimes were heavily perpetuated.

My vicinity happens to be one of those where people haven't gone over the trauma from the past. it's one where people haven't accepted and adjusted to the new reality. The reality that crime rate has drastically reduced to the barest minimum.
It happens to be one of those places occupied by a mixed population of people in the middle class and lower class (poor). Here the middle class dominates and hence influences the happenings and ways of life in the environment.

So although the environment is now very safe for both people to move about and businesses to stay open at night, you find out that there isn't any night life as you hardly find people outside when the time clocks 7pm. Even my family complains and gets really worried when I get back from work by 8.

They still are very fearful and thinks that people are just lucky not to be hurt.
I particularly like night walks. I like going out at night as I find the weather very friendly, plus most of the activities I engage in somehow have a way of keeping me out till sunset.

My area is one with little or no crime cases and I consider myself lucky to be there because even though I come back late, I'm never worried or scared of criminals, but because of my love for night time, I have somehow come to dislike my neighbourhood as nightlife is almost dead there. You hardly find people out at night and only a few bars are open. I have to go out of my neighborhood if I need to enjoy myself at night and this is stressful and costs me even more.

Because of this, I have started making plans to move to a livelier and more vibrant environment where crime rate is as low and nightlife still exist, and where people do not just see nights as time for sleep or for evil doings. Some people say I can't get it all but I don't mind trying

So how is it at your area, is the crime rate low too ?, I'd really love to hear from you. Thanks for stopping by

Wow the trauma from the past is still in lot of people in your vicinity that's why night life isn't that active. I believe you will still see a safer area just like yours in which you will find what you desire

Port Harcourt is a good place to live in but some of the areas over there is known for terrible social vices.

If you look around very well, you'd find what soothes your personality.

My cousin lives in PH and over the years I've always wanted to visit, but the stories I hear always make me have a rethink even though he tries to assure me there won't be problems.

I think relocating to another state or to another safer vicinity there would be the best. What do you think?
