Good day everyone, I'm really happy to be here, I am a teacher and also a student. I teach children and I'm really passionate about it. I'm glad to have found this Community where I can share my experience and ideas concerning education and also learn from people too. I know it will be a nice time here.

Today I want to tell you about one very important quality of a teacher. I will be talking about PATIENCE. I hope this post teaches you a thing or two. I hope it helps you improve yourself.

Patience is One quality or virtue every teacher should have.
Firstly, who is a teacher ?, What does it mean to teach
As we all know, a teacher is one who teaches.
To teach, according to the Merriam Webster's English Dictionary means:

  • to cause someone to know something.
  • to impart knowledge of source

By this definitions, we can understand that a teacher isn't just one who directs a certain people or who just instructs them.
A teacher is also not someone with the most knowledge of or about a thing. A lot of people think that is what makes one a good teacher but it is not.

A teacher is one who "causes people to know", " one who imparts knowledge".
So if the knowledge is not imparted, teaching hasn't been done.
Without the students or recipients comprehending, grasping or knowing what a person says, then teaching hasn't taken place and the person trying to pass that information isn't fit to be called a teacher

A teacher makes sure his/her students understand and know what is being told to them. The knowledge has to be imparted on the students for one to be successfully called a teacher.

Imparting knowledge isn't really an easy task, it requires skills, an in-depth understanding of the information to be passed to the students and most importantly it requires "PATIENCE".

Patience is a virtue and also an important quality every teacher should possess. To successfully teach or impart knowledge, Patience is needed. Any one lacking this quality will not make a good teacher

Patience is closely related to the word tolerance, in my own words, patience means to calm down and wait.

In my experience as a teacher (particularly a children teacher), I have come to see the importance of this quality called patience. I have met and have taught quite a lot of children and have come to the conclusion that; with patience, every child can be taught.

I have come to realize that different people have different comprehension and retention capacities and speed.

Some people can learn really fast while others learn very slowly. Some people can remember easily while some others have to rack their brains to remember a thing.

And I must say that without patience it is really difficult to accommodate and handle these different set of people.

patience is key if teaching has to be done, if knowledge has to be imparted.

Why we teachers should be patient

  • Because all humans have different learning capacities and everyone can't move with the same pace.

  • A show of patience by the teachers makes the students comfortable and love learning.

  • Being patient with a student helps them learn to be patient too

  • Being patient makes the student love their teachers.

  • patience saves the child : When you're patient with a child or your student, you give them adequate time to learn and think through a thing. It enables you and the individual to discover the potential of inherent in them and thereby saving the individual from not knowing what they can be capable of.

  • Generally, patience makes effective teaching and learning possible.

Let me share with you a story from my experience as a teacher

Few years back, I got a job to teach some kids. Their parents had brought them because they had heard that I was good and that my students were smart.

When I started the lessons with them, I realized that one of them wasn't assimilating anything I had taught,
At first I didn't really bother, I just felt with time he would level-up but he didn't.

After 2 month, he was still the way he was, he still wasn't coping well. It was frustrating but I didn't give up. When I enquired from his parents about his learning history, they then told me how they had hired people with the best college degrees and qualifications but still nothing changed, they told me how other teachers didn't want to teach him because he wasn't responding well.

I had talked to the child so I knew nothing was wrong with him. He was just a very slow learner. I had to re-strategise, I had to become his friend, I began handling him privately and slowly. We started from the basics and progressed from there, it wasn't really easy because this child was really slow but I was committed to proving that he could be taught. I was patient with him. He learned in bits and with time he began making little progress. His mental capacity increased gradually and with time he began assimilating things normally. He is one of the best children I have taught, I found out that he has a fascinating memory. He remembers things better than the children of his age.
I discovered that although he learned slowly, he wasn't forgetful, once he assimilates a thing, it was permanent.

I discovered that what other teachers lacked was patience. The child is doing well now. He loves to learn , he loves himself and his parents are so happy and proud of him

Patience saved him, patience was key to his development.

lessons to take home

I am particularly passionate about this because I want everyone especially teachers, students and educators to ;

  • Be conscious of this quality called patience.
  • I want them to be conscious of the fact that humans are different and have different learning capacities and abilities.
  • Most importantly, I want want us to be intentional about being patient.

So let us all evaluate ourselves, are we patient ?, Are we truly good educators ?, Are we fit to be called teachers ?

Please let's us all try to have the quality. With patience everyone can be taught.

Thanks for reading my post. I hope you found it interesting.
Special thanks to this Community @educationhive, God bless you all.
