Delicious local desserts

Dear all hivers.. How has your day been? In Sarawak, we eat lots and lots of food. Today, I am going to bring you to a new restaurant that has opened for business here in Miri where locals can enjoy traditionally made desserts. Most of these desserts are handmade and steamed. This restaurant is quite popular and is always full. I was lucky to get there early and so got my chance to purchase some of the different kiuh kiuh (steamed desserts).

I bought 3 of each in the counter just to try them all

These are all the different colourful delights. They have this delicious texture whereby they melt inside the mouth once you have them inside the mouth.

It all started in the 50s.

The original founders started this business way back in 1951. The original shop is still here in the city. This is a new branch. To modernize traditional delights and treats.

If you walk to this counter, what would you order?

I bet you'll get one of each one. That's exactly what I did. I ordered one of each.

Steamed with rice

The different colours make them super delicious to eat.

The ones below are the tortoise shells

Those are some of my favorites. I love eating these tortoise shells. Inside are fillings made from natural dhall bits.

Still early and the restaurant was still empty.

Then, not long later, it filled up. Lots and lots of people suddenly came. It was pretty sudden. Like a wave of people coming.

The staff busy working hard

Two fortune cats greet us here. I got my money attracted to the counter.

It started filling up and all of the sudden, lots of people at the counter.

I am not a fan of lots of people usually. I was waiting for my takeaway. I did not want to eat here.

Got my order in my car. Three boxes of them.

EGG TART

Yummy egg tarts.

The rice desserts

The top part is made from flour and the bottom with sticky glutinous rice. The colours have different flavours. The darker colours have a denser texture.

These are definitely my favourite.

Super duper yummy.

Yam cake

These are made from yam. My wife loves them.

Layer sticky glutinous rice cake

These are not easy to make. Painstakingly steamed layer by layer.

Pumpkin and pandan flavoured desserts. Yummy.

After all those. I was full. We did not eat everything by ourselves. This is just for photo. The other half was given to my family.

Hope that you enjoy looking at those desserts. Have a great day.

We call those snacks kakanin in Ph. Most Filipinos eat it with coffee in the morning or afternoon

Those gelatin looking desserts are something that I have seen all over SE Asia and while I am not trying to tell anyone what they should enjoy, I've always found them to be a bit strange tasting. If one is offered to me I will eat it but I would never buy one.

I do love egg tarts though!
