Nasi Katok Brunei - A popular local delight

Hi hi.. Everyone, it's a Tuesday again. If you ever visit Brunei, one of the places to visit to get some food is definitely a container that sells rice. Drive along the road and you'll see these container stalls. They are a popular place to get lunch or even breakfast. It is the cheapest meal in Brunei. Introducing the

NASI KATOK

Knocking rice as it translates. The origin of this is that the seller would go knocking on the doors to sell this rice. Nowadays, it's the customers that go knocking. One packet of Nasi Katok usually goes for around 1.20 Brunei dollars or around USD 90 cents. It is quite popular.

What is usually in a pack of Nasi Katok?

Coconut rice, some meat, peanuts sometimes, sambal (spicy gravy) and cucumber slices.

ZNR Stall

This stall looks quite popular and many locals are seen queuing up during lunch and breakfast. Those who wear coveralls usually work for the oil and gas industry.

The are some other local snacks other than Nasi Katok

The snacks are delicious and are made of wheat and seafood flavoured.

The containers for you to choose the different add ons.

They also sell fried chicken skin. Yes, just the skin. I've not seen that in Malaysia yet. Usually, in Brunei, locals fry the chicken skin. I usually do not eat chicken skin but one of my friends who I used to work with loves eating them. We would walk to the stall opposite of our office and he would grab a pack of chicken skin.

FRIED CHICKEN SKIN

They usually sell for less than a dollar. Quite worth it if you love to eat chicken skin.

That's how Nasi Katok is prepared

The sauce or gravy is later poured onto the rice and then added on with peanuts and other stuff. Maybe some chicken skin? hahaha.. Perhaps Chicken sing.

My wife getting her food

Would you want to try some Nasi Katok? It is a very famous way of getting lunch. Ask any local here what a pack of Nasi Katok is and they would be licking their tongue. Hope that you have a great day and get hungry looking at Nasi Katok... =)
