Visiting Japan's Majestic Buddha "Ushiku Daibutsu"

avatar

On the second day of our family trip to Tokyo, Japan, our younger and restless contingents went to Tokyo Disneyland. While the rest of us opted for some sightseeing. We visited the giant Buddha in Ushiku which was Guinness Book’s tallest bronze Buddha from 1993 to 2008.

At its height of 120 meters, it easily dwarfs New York’s Statue of Liberty, which can only reach up to the Buddha’s hips.

The Buddha named Ushiku Daibutsu is located in Ibaraki Prefecture, about an hour’s bus ride to the north of Tokyo. We rented a microbus for this trip (in lieu of a train ride which would have been fun too).

Did you know that Buddhas have different hand gestures otherwise known as mudra? They also have different meanings. Ushiku Daibutsu has its thumb and forefinger forming a circle, which is meant to depict the transmission of Buddha’s teachings.

As we continue our way to the Buddha from the ticket booth, we passed by the scale model of the Buddha’s head which is 1/1000 volume of the actual statue’s head.

We passed through this archway called Hakkenmon Gate housing three Buddha images on the second floor.

 "ish19.jpg"

On the ground floor is a large bell. We rang it with the attached mallet and it gave a very loud sound breaking the quietness of the area.

 "ish16.jpg"

Past the archway and along the path leading to the Daibutsu is this censer (incense burner) made of bronze, which is the largest in Japan.

While we wanted to go straight to the massive statue, we took some time to explore and appreciate the surrounding expansive and beautiful garden.

 "ish7.jpg"

We walked through the garden teeming with various colors of flowers like moss-pink, and blue star creeper.

The combination of greens and the yellow and red maples, the cherry. We can’t help but get awed by all that nature has to offer.

In addition to the plants and trees is a big pond where visitors can feed the large volume of Koi.

It’s so amusing to see the Kois scramble in a feeding frenzy to get a share of the food tossed to them. There were a lot of them!

In another area of the garden is what they call the Sea of Clumps. It is a pond that represents the source of life. It is believed that life has originated from water.

There is an elevator at the back where one can go up to the Daibutsu’s chest and where one can look out and view the surrounding landscape, but we chose to admire the statue and walked the grounds and its well-maintained garden.

We had a grand time watching the majestic Buddha, especially against the backdrop of colorful gardens and blue skies. This place evoked in us feelings of peace, serenity, and tranquility. Glad we chose it over Mickey (Mouse).

Wow, that's a huge buddha statue! The park is beautiful and really looks so tranquil with nicely landscaped garden with lovely flowers. Your Koi feeding reminds me of the fish feeding we had in Lake Meads where the big fishes jumped joyfully for the bread.

You can see the statue even from afar because of its height. The colorful and well-maintained garden is peaceful, a respite from crowded tourist spots.

120 meters? WOW! It must be quite impressive to stand in front of it. It's a pity that its size is difficult to be captured in a photos. I love those gardens and blossoming trees. It is all so pretty!

Thank you for sharing!

We looked like dwarfs in our photos standing in front of it. Yes, I really loved everything about the garden, a beautiful respite from Disneyland's crowd where the rest of our group went that day.
