(ENG/ESP) From my garden: the story of my beautiful margariteño chili bush

Greetings to everyone in the #hivegarden community, nice to be with you again.

As I told you in a previous post I started my vegetable garden with aji dulce bushes, whose seeds I was throwing in my yard.

To my surprise, I see that a chili bell pepper bush is growing behind a trinitaria bush that I had just planted, on a side where I had not thrown seeds. I decided to keep it there, as well as the little trinitaria, for fear that one of them might die when the soil was disturbed. So they have been growing together. With the kindness of the ornamental that has yielded part of its development for the chili to grow vigorously.

My astonishment was even greater when the first fruits appeared and I realized that it was not another chili bell pepper plant, but a plant of aji margariteño.

As I have also told you in my presentation, I currently live on Margarita Island (Venezuela), and in this blessed land grows a very peculiar type of chili bell pepper, which has adapted to the inclement weather to give us a unique flavor, aroma and personality.

So much so that there are gastronomic groups fighting for this chili to have its denomination of origin and to preserve its production as part of the island's cultural heritage and national patrimony. As those who know say, the "ají margariteño" can grow in other lands, but it will never have its characteristic aroma and flavor that the saltpeter and the climate of this Caribbean island give it, and from there it has earned its name and surname: "ají margariteño".

So when I saw a margariteño chili growing, I began to take care of it with even more care. It became the darling of the garden.

To this pampering and care, she responded wonderfully. She was loading herself with more and more chili peppers, so much so that she looked like a little Christmas tree with her fruits hanging down.

The time came for ripening. However, an intruder got ahead of us and "devoured" the first fruit. From that moment on we were very careful and began to remove them from the bush before they ripened.

Thus, in my most recent culinary preparations, my stews have been seasoned with aji margariteño. Definitely, its peculiar flavor gives a plus to the meals.

This is how this chili margariteño plant magically grew in my garden. I have already taken enough seeds from it to soon formally sow new plants and thus continue enjoying this fruit of peculiar and distinctive aroma and flavor.

Desde mi huerta: la historia de mi hermosa mata de ají margariteño

Saludos a todos en la comunidad #hivegarden, encantada de estar nuevamente con ustedes.

Como les comenté en un anterior post comencé a armar mi huerta con matas de ají dulce, cuyas semillas fui lanzando en mi patio.

Para mi sorpresa, veo que una mata de ají va creciendo detrás de una mata de trinitaria que recién había sembrado, en un lado donde no había lanzado semillas. Decidí conservarla en ese lugar, al igual que a la pequeña trinitaria, por temor a que alguna muriera al remover la tierra. Así que han ido creciendo juntas. Con la gentileza de la ornamental que ha cedido parte de su desarrollo para que el ají crezca vigoroso.

Mi asombro fue aún mayor cuando aparecieron los primeros frutos y me di cuenta de que no se trataba de otra mata de ají dulce, sino de una mata de ají margariteño.

Como también les he contado en mi presentación, actualmente vivo en la isla de Margarita (Venezuela), y en esta bendita tierra crece un tipo de ají muy peculiar, que se supo adaptar a las inclemencias del clima para regalarnos un sabor, aroma y personalidad única.

Tanto es así que hay grupos gastronómicos luchando para que este ají cuente con su denominación de origen y se preserve su producción como parte del acervo cultural insular y patrimonio nacional. Como dicen los que saben, el ají margariteño puede crecer en otras tierras, pero jamás tendrá su aroma y sabor característico que le aporta el salitre y el clima de esta isla caribeña y de allí se ha ganado su nombre y apellido: “ají margariteño”.

Así que al ver que crecía una mata de ají margariteño comencé a cuidarla aún con más esmero. Se convirtió en la consentida de la huerta.

A estos mimos y cuidados, ella nos respondió maravillosamente. Se fue cargando de más y más ajíes, tanto así que parecía un árbolito de Navidad con sus frutos colgando.

Llegó el momento de la maduración. Sin embargo, un intruso se nos adelantó y nos “devoró” el primer fruto. A partir de ese momento tuvimos mucho cuidado y comenzamos a quitarlos de la mata antes de que se maduraran.

Es así como en mis más recientes preparaciones culinarias, mis guisos han estado aderezados con ají margariteño. Definitivamente, su peculiar sabor le da un plus a las comidas.

Así fue como de manera mágica creció esta mata de ají margariteño en mi huerta. Ya le he sacado bastantes semillas para pronto sembrar formalmente nuevas plantas y así seguir disfrutando de este fruto de peculiar y distintivo aroma y sabor.

Agradecida con este regalo que me dio “mamá natura”. Con esta historia me despido por hoy. ¡Deseando para ti, que me lees, que tengas una buena cosecha!
