Hi my lovely friends, Greetings from Sri Lanka. I think everything are well to you. May 15, 2022 is a very important day for Buddhists all over the world. Vesak Poya is the day on which the birth, enlightenment and demise of our religious leader Buddha took place. This day is celebrated by the people of our country. Vesak Day has not been celebrated properly for the past three years due to terrorist attacks and the spread of corona virus. Therefore, although this special day is expected to be held at the top, it has to be celebrated at a minimum due to the current inflation and economic crisis. This is due to the fact that the rupee, our currency, has depreciated sharply against the US dollar and the prices of all commodities have risen sharply.

On Vesak day, Buddhists decorate their homes with ornaments. Vesak lanterns are prominent among them. The frame is made by tying small pieces of bamboo to each other with string. These come in a variety of shapes. Star shape, lotus shape and octagonal shape are widely used for Vesak lanterns. These are sold in Vesak shops due to the busy schedule and lack of time available to people today. These are made of templates that have a certain amount of durability. Buddhist logos are embellished on the surface of the templates and pasted with wax paper or sawdust. The smallest one like this costs around Rs. 300 in the market. We did not buy Vesak lanterns as they were made in our house. The number of stalls this year has dropped significantly compared to previous years. These temporary stalls were set up in front of the ancient Postal Department building in Galle.

Among the Buddhist decorations on Vesak day, the Buddhist flag is also highly valued. In every home, a Buddhist flag is displayed in front of an office. These five-color flags are also hung on vehicles. Residents also light clay lamps using coconut oil at night. Vesak lanterns are lit with candles or light bulbs to add light to the night. Bulb vines of various colors and sizes are also a great decoration for Vesak at night. This time their prices have gone up considerably. So I bought two small bulb vines. Their bulbs were inspected from the market to see the condition. These decorations are made at home, and similar decorations are made for temples as well as Poya Day programs. Thanks for visiting. See you soon. Have a nice day.
