Is Earth's Last Hope Against Aliens a Convicted Criminal?

Is Earth's only hope for regaining its freedom in the hands of an ex-world leader convicted of crimes against humanity?

Prologue

A world leader is found guilty of crimes against humanity and is sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole. What this world leader did was so heinous that even her peers among brutal world leaders say she went too far.

Beginning

20 years pass, and the world had become a less violent place. It had also become a more frivolous place. Tough-minded people of the earlier era had faded to dust or irrelevance or both.

More time is spent-- or is it wasted?-- on arguments concerning flags and colors and grammatical elements. Academies charged with educating leaders of the future had transformed into propaganda mills. Instituions meant to be a check on power centers had morphed into regime tools. Failure to exercise ggrey matter has caused people's brains to atrophy to goop.

Shift

It's with the world in this state that an Invader from another galaxy has come to Earth. The name of that galaxy is hard to pronounce in any of Earth's languages, but it contains the letter D several times. For this reason, people of Earth refer to the invader as "Invader-D's".

Some nations surrender to the Invader-D's immediately. Other nations mount a resistance only to be disintegrated in a show of might by Invader-D's. Seven days after Invader-D's appeared in the skies, the rest of the world's nations-- reluctantly-- surrender.

For 5 years, Earth is treated by Invader-D's as a hard labor colony. Occasional shows of resistance are put down swiftly and brutally. Arguments about flags and colors and grammar gave way to shrieks of desparation.

Update

In several halls of "power" (where heads of state once wielded power), discussions center around the topic of securing freedom from the Invader-D's. Many plans are proposed, debated, and-- usually-- rejected.

When these people have their discussions, the question of who's going to carry out this campaign for freedom normally ends with everyone accusing everyone else of not having the qualities necessary to successfully execute the campaign. By that point, the calls degenerate into pitiful gripe sessions.

Uptempo

One day, the end of one of these useless debates ends with an idea from one of the newer leaders. He says there is someone on Earth who is capable of executing the long-desired campaign for freedom, and this person has all the qualities needed to execute the campain for freedom successfully.

When the other leaders ask who this person is, he names the former head of state serving a life sentence for crimes against humanity.

Now the discussions revolve around how a convicted criminal found guilty of crimes against humanity can possibly deliver Earth from Invader-D's and back to some form of freedom an earlier time:

  • Some leaders won't bother considering this as an option;
  • Some leaders are against it, but are willing to hear arguments in favor;
  • A few leaders explain how such a person is exactly what's needed.

Questions for The Leaders

Do the leaders consider the survival of humanity in their decision-making?

Do the leaders proceed with half-measures and get wiped out in the process anyway?

Do the leaders continue to accept their existence as cheap labor for Invader D's?

Many other questions can be asked, but I leave it to the readers to come up with them and share them in the comments.

Is There a Point Here? Just My Two Sats.

Over the last few decades, people in many nations have been conditioned to think a certain way. Even if some people have rebelled against this thought conditioning, the thinking is so pervasive and embedded in the cultures of those nations that they don't know any other way to deal with it (for or against).

If a situation so desperate came about that people would need to resort-- heaven forbid!-- to common sense, would those people make the right decision? The objectively right decision?

Is their only hope to live to see the next day someone they would have sacrificed or killed had the option been available?

We can come up with many other questions regarding how Earth can save itself under the above scenario. At the moment it's not looking good for us. That doesn't mean we're done; however, how we get through such a situation isn't obvious.

Would we be able to come out victorious if an ID4/Independence Day took place in 2022? In 1996 people were far more hopeful about humanity. In 2022, the prevailing attitude seems to be to let the ETs finish the job.

For those of us who believe that there is still hope for humanity, one lesson is that it can come from the most unexpected or outrageous sources.
