¡Hola, amigos! En esta ocasión quiero compartir con ustedes una review del primero de los libros de mi saga favorita, se trata de Harry Potter y la Piedra Filosofal, y sus diferencias con su homólogo cinematográfico, todo esto a propósito de los 20 años que cumple la película, la cuál volvió a los cines del mundo el pasado fin de semana.
Hello, friends! This time I want to share with you a review of the first book of my favorite saga, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, and its differences with its cinematic counterpart, all this on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the movie, which returned to theaters around the world last weekend.
Si no has visto las películas o leído los libros pero pretendes hacerlo y no te gustan los spoilers, debo advertirte que te encontrarás muchos, así que dejo a tu criterio leer o no este artículo.
If you haven't seen the movies or read the books but intend to do so and you don't like spoilers, I must warn you that you will encounter many, so I leave it up to you to read or not read this article.
¿Qué encontramos en el libro?
What do we find in the book?
El primero de la saga comienza como un libro para niños, aunque a lo largo de los demás vemos la evolución de los personajes y termina siendo una saga juvenil bastante bélica.
The first of the saga begins as a children's book, although throughout the others we see the evolution of the characters and it ends up being a rather warlike juvenile saga.
Harry Potter es un niño de tan solo diez años de edad que vive en una casa convencional, en un barrio convencional, con una familia que, aunque pretende ser lo más convencional posible, a mi criterio, se salen de lo común que debería ser una buena familia, por el simple hecho de que lo maltratan a pesar de que ellos son todo lo que él tiene en el mundo.
Harry Potter is a boy of only ten years of age who lives in a conventional house, in a conventional neighborhood, with a family that, although pretending to be as conventional as possible, in my opinion, are out of the ordinary that a good family should be, for the simple fact that they mistreat him despite the fact that they are all he has in the world.
Su tío Vernon Dursley es un hombre gordo y casi sin cuello, con un gran bigote de morsa, constantemente regaña al pequeño Harry por todo, pero en especial por la apariencia de su cabello, el cuál es rebelde y se resiste a los peines. Su tía Petunia Dursley es tan desagradable como su marido, pero en apariencia es muy distinta, es una mujer alta, muy delgada y con un cuello extremadamente largo que le sirve para espiar a los vecinos
His uncle Vernon Dursley is a fat man with almost no neck, with a large walrus mustache, constantly scolds little Harry for everything, but especially for the appearance of his hair, which is unruly and resists combs. Her aunt Petunia Dursley is as unpleasant as her husband, but in appearance she is very different, she is a tall, very thin woman with an extremely long neck that she uses to spy on the neighbors.
El pequeño Duddley es un niño gordo, mimado, egoísta y bravucón, acostumbrado a obtener siempre lo que quiere cuando quiere, detesta a Harry tanto como sus padres y siempre lo persigue para golpearlo, valiéndose de su corpulencia a diferencia de Harry que más bien es delgado y bajito para su edad.
Little Duddley is a fat, spoiled, selfish and bully boy, used to always get what he wants when he wants it, he hates Harry as much as his parents and always chases him to hit him, using his corpulence unlike Harry who is rather thin and short for his age.
Harry desconoce su origen, tan solo sabe lo que sus tíos le han dicho, que sus padres murieron en un accidente de auto, y que por esa razón ellos se vieron forzados a cuidarlo desde que era un bebé, pero el pobre niño es maltratado constantemente por esta familia, nunca le han sacado una fotografía, o le han dado alguna de sus padres, ni siquiera tiene una habitación decente para vivir dentro de la casa, vive en una alacena debajo de la escalera, le gritan, aveces lo ignoran, lo dejan al cuidado de una vieja mujer cuando salen a divertirse y siempre lo cargan de trabajo (quizá como una manera de que se gane su manutención)
Harry doesn't know his origin, he only knows what his uncles have told him, that his parents died in a car accident, and for that reason they were forced to take care of him since he was a baby, but the poor boy is constantly mistreated by this family, they have never taken a picture of him, or given him any of his parents, he doesn't even have a decent room to live in the house, he lives in a cupboard under the stairs, they yell at him, sometimes ignore him, leave him in the care of an old woman when they go out to have fun and always burden him with work (maybe as a way for him to earn his keep).
Es muy común conseguir maltrato infantil en la literatura inglesa para niños, lo encontramos por ejemplo en Oliver Twist de Charles Dickens o en Matilda de Roald Dahl, tal vez porque era algo muy común desde los tiempos de la revolución industrial y por esa razón quedó en la psiquis de los escritores.
It's very common to find child abuse in English literature for children, we find it for example in Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens or in Matilda by Roald Dahl, perhaps because it was something very common since the times of the industrial revolution and for that reason it remained in the psyche of the writers.
Bien, afortunadamente todo cambia para el pequeño Harry cuando cumple 11 años y recibe una carta proveniente Hogwarts, el colegio de magia y hechicería. Harry entonces descubre, a través de su amigo Hagrid, que es un mago y que sus padres no murieron en un accidente de tránsito, sino que fueron asesinados por un terrible mago al que todos temen pronunciar su nombre por temor a que regrese, este mago terrible intentó asesinar también a Harry, pero cuando arrojó la maldición asesina contra el bebé, esta rebotó sobre él y lo hizo desaparecer.
Well, fortunately everything changes for little Harry when he turns 11 and receives a letter from Hogwarts, the school of magic and wizardry. Harry then discovers, through his friend Hagrid, that he is a wizard and that his parents didn't die in a traffic accident, but were killed by a terrible wizard that everyone is afraid to pronounce his name for fear that he will return, this terrible wizard tried to kill Harry too, but when he cast the killing curse on the baby, it bounced off him and made him disappear.
En Hogwarts la vida de Harry da un giro de 180 grados, no solo porque descubre un mundo totalmente diferente al que él está acostumbrado, sino porque por primera vez en la vida tiene amigos verdaderos, aunque también algunos enemigos como Draco Malfoy, un niño malcriado al igual que Duddley que desprecia a Ron Weasley por ser pobre, y a Harry por negarle su amistad en un principio.
At Hogwarts Harry's life takes a 180 degree turn, not only because he discovers a totally different world than the one he is used to, but also because for the first time in his life he has true friends, but also some enemies like Draco Malfoy, a spoiled child as well as Duddley who despises Ron Weasley for being poor, and Harry for denying him his friendship in the beginning.
También conoce a Severus Snape, el profesor de Pociones que siempre anda de mal humor y parece tenerle inquina a Harry, de hecho él y sus amigos piensan que el profesor pudo haber intentado matarlo hechizando la escoba cuando Harry estaba jugando quidditch (un deporte mágico) pero nada más lejos de la realidad pues Snape solo intentaba ayudarlo y era el profesor Quirrel el único responsable del intento de asesinato.
He also meets Severus Snape, the Potions professor who is always in a bad mood and seems to have a grudge against Harry, in fact he and his friends think that the professor may have tried to kill him by hexing the broom when Harry was playing quidditch (a magical sport) but nothing could be further from the truth because Snape was only trying to help him and Professor Quirrel was the only one responsible for the assassination attempt.
Con la ayuda de sus amigos Harry logra vencer todos los obstáculos que lo separaban de Voldemort quien estaba escondido en el turbante del profesor Quirrel. En ese momento el mago oscuro descubre que no puede tocar a Harry y posteriormente el profesor Dumbledore (director del colegio) le explica que Voldemort no puede tocarlo porque Lily Potter, la madre de Harry puso en él un hechizo de protección a través de su amor.
With the help of his friends Harry manages to overcome all the obstacles that separated him from Voldemort who was hiding in Professor Quirrel's turban. At that moment the dark wizard discovers that he can not touch Harry and later Professor Dumbledore (headmaster of the school) explains that Voldemort can not touch him because Lily Potter, Harry's mother put a protection spell on him through her love.
Mi opinión
My opinion
A mí me encanta este libro porque en él podemos ver la diferencia y evolución de un niño en su timidez y actitud retraída, creyéndose incapaz de lograr algo o de ser extraordinario como en esa famosa frase que le dijo a Hagrid, su amigo, cuando él le reveló que era un mago: «yo solo soy Harry», pero luego cuando hace amigos y descubre de lo que es capaz, su personalidad se vuelve más fuerte, ahora se siente apto para enfrentar a los Dursley, de la misma forma en que enfrenta Malfoy, además descubre que en nuevo «mundo» hay mucha gente que lo quiere y protege.
I love this book because in it we can see the difference and evolution of a child in his shyness and withdrawn attitude, believing himself incapable of achieving anything or being extraordinary as in that famous sentence he said to Hagrid, his friend, when he revealed to him that he was a wizard: "I'm just Harry", but then when he makes friends and discovers what he is capable of, his personality becomes stronger, now he feels fit to face the Dursleys, in the same way he faces Malfoy, he also discovers that in new "world" there are many people who love and protect him.
Como ya Harry conoce el egoísmo y la maldad en su familia Muggle, por esa misma razón decide de una vez de que lado estar cuando conoce a Ron Weasley y a Draco Malfoy, al mismo tiempo descubre que hay distintos tipos de personas en ambos mundos, el muggle y el mágico.
As Harry already knows the selfishness and evil in his Muggle family, for that same reason he decides once and for all which side to be on when he meets Ron Weasley and Draco Malfoy, at the same time he discovers that there are different types of people in both worlds, the Muggle and the magical.
Una de las cosas más me llamó la atención y me hizo admirar a J.K Rowlling como escritora es el hecho de que es extremadamente creativa, esta mujer no solo creó personajes estupendos y todo un mundo paralelo, sino que además se encargó de inventar una moneda que se usaría en el mundo mágico (El Galeón) esta es una moneda de oro puro, Rowlling además inventó todo un sistema monetario: Un Galeón equivale a 17 Sickles (monedas hechas de plata) o a 493 Knuts (monedas hechas de bronce)
One of the things that caught my attention and made me admire J.K Rowlling as a writer is the fact that she is extremely creative, this woman not only created wonderful characters and a whole parallel world, but she also invented a coin that would be used in the magical world (The Galleon) this is a pure gold coin, Rowlling also invented a whole monetary system: A Galleon is equivalent to 17 Sickles (coins made of silver) or 493 Knuts (coins made of bronze).
Los magos tienen su propio banco, Gringotts, dirigido por duendes malhumorados. Este banco está lleno de cámaras subterráneas donde se almacena el dinero y está protegido por complejos sortilegios para evitar a los ladrones, o lo que es peor, para atraparlos. También funciona como casa de cambio pues allí puedes cambiar el dinero muggle por el mágico.
Wizards have their own bank, Gringotts, run by grumpy goblins. This bank is full of subway chambers where money is stored and is protected by complex spells to avoid thieves, or worse, to catch them. It also functions as a money exchange as you can exchange Muggle money for magical money.
Rowlling además inventó un deporte llamado quidditch, un deporte con sus propias reglas. Cada equipo tiene siete jugadores que van sobre escobas mágicas y se dividen de la siguiente forma: tres cazadores (los que intentan llevar la quafle, es decir la pelota, a la meta) dos golpeadores (que intentan enviar bludgers a los cazadores oponentes para evitar que marquen gol), un guardián que resguarda los tres postes con el aro a donde intentan llegar los cazadores, y finalmente un buscador cuyo trabajo consiste en atrapar la snitch dorada, una pequeña bola dorada (atraparla equivale a 150 puntos para el equipo y el final del partido)
Rowlling also invented a sport called quidditch, a sport with its own rules. Each team has seven players on magical brooms and is divided as follows: three chasers (who try to get the quaffle, i.e. the ball, to the goal), two beaters (who try to send bludgers to the opposing chasers to prevent them from scoring), a keeper who guards the three posts with the hoop where the chasers try to reach, and finally a seeker whose job is to catch the golden snitch, a small golden ball (catching it is worth 150 points for the team and the end of the match).
Otra de las cosas que me gustó mucho y que además considero innovadora en este tipo de literatura fantástica, es el hecho de que las varitas de los magos poseen personalidad, no es el mago quien las escoge, sino todo lo contrario, ellas escogen a sus futuros dueños, además su personalidad está determinada por el tipo de núcleo que poseen: nervios de corazón de dragón, plumas de fénix, pelo de crines de unicornio, cabello de veela. Estos materiales usados en los núcleos varían según el fabricante, por ejemplo Ollivanders, el fabricante de varitas del callejón Diagon no suele usar cabellos de veela porque le infunden una personalidad temperamental a las varitas.
Another thing that I really liked and that I consider innovative in this type of fantasy literature, is the fact that the wands of the wizards have personality, it's not the wizard who chooses them, but on the contrary, they choose their future owners, and their personality is determined by the type of core they have: dragon heart nerves, phoenix feathers, unicorn mane hair, veela hair. These materials used in the cores vary by manufacturer, for example Ollivanders, the Diagon Alley wand manufacturer does not usually use veela hair because it infuses the wands with a temperamental personality.

Obviamente todo un libro no cabría en una película que desde luego tiene un límite de tiempo, por esa razón no me molesta tanto que no aparezcan muchas escenas del libro, pero sí me molesta que hayan obviado personajes, que si bien no son demasiado relevantes para el desarrollo de la trama, igual nos habría encantado ver. Estoy hablando específicamente de Peeves, el poltergeist fastidioso que adora recibir a los novatos arrojándoles globos de agua o tizas.
Obviously a whole book wouldn't fit in a movie that of course has a time limit, for that reason it doesn't bother me so much that not many scenes from the book appear, but it does bother me that they have left out characters, that although they are not too relevant to the development of the plot, we still would have loved to see. I'm talking specifically about Peeves, the annoying poltergeist who loves to greet newbies by throwing water balloons or chalk at them.
Otra cosa que difiere del libro es el desarrollo de personaje en cuanto a Neville Longbottom, en el libro se aprecia más su inseguridad al principio y como al final toma un poco más de confianza tras recibir la recompensa por parte de Dumbledore (esto último lo vemos en la película pero en el libro podemos apreciarlo con más detalles obviamente)
Another thing that differs from the book is the character development of Neville Longbottom, in the book we can appreciate more his insecurity at the beginning and how at the end he becomes a little more confident after receiving the reward from Dumbledore (the latter we see in the movie but in the book we can appreciate it in more detail obviously).
y creo que no solo a mí, sino a todos los fans de la saga, nos habría encantado ver la escena del reto de las pociones que Snape dejó en el lugar donde resguardaban la Piedra Filosofal, donde Hermione ayudó a Harry a tomar la decisión correcta.
And I think that not only me, but all the fans of the saga, would have loved to see the scene of the potions challenge that Snape left in the place where the Philosopher's Stone was kept, where Hermione helped Harry to make the right decision.
Aún así amo esta película y creo que de todas las películas de la franquicia, ésta fue la que obvió menos información con respecto al libro. Además amo el soundtrack porque en cada nota grita «magia» y le imprime el sentimiento y las emociones correctas a cada escena.
I still love this movie and I think that out of all the movies in the franchise, this was the one that left out the least information from the book. I also love the soundtrack because in every note it screams "magic" and gives the right feeling and emotions to every scene.
