Magnificent Century /Sultán Suleimán (Review)
Hello, my dear friends, I've been wanting to review this wonderful series for a while now, which I love, but I was hoping to get a lot more into the plot. Although I was not used to watch Turkish series, and in fact this is the only one I have seen, since I saw the trailer it caught my attention, then I decided to investigate a little more, and then I realized that I couldn't wait any longer, I had to watch it for the main reason that I love universal history and I remember that one of my favourite topics when I was at school was precisely the Ottoman Empire, I was struck by the way the Jenizaros soldiers (Turkish imperial guard) fought and how the hierarchies were structured in the Harem inside the Sultan's palace.
Hola, mis queridos amigos, desde hace tiempo he querido hacer una review de esta maravillosa serie, la cual me encanta, pero estaba esperando avanzar muchísimo más en la trama. A pesar de que yo no acostumbraba ver series Turcas, y de hecho esta es la única que he visto, desde que vi el trailer me llamó mucho la atención, luego decidí investigar un poco más, y entonces me di cuenta de que no podía seguir esperando más tiempo, tenía que verla por la principal razón de que amo la historia universal y recuerdo que uno de mis tópicos favoritos cuando yo estaba en el colegio era precisamente el imperio Otomano, me llamaba la atención la forma de luchar de los soldados Jenízaros (guardia imperial turca) y como estaban estructuradas las jerarquías en el Harem dentro del palacio del Sultán.
Overview/Resumen
"Muhtesem Yüzyil", better known in Spanish as "Suleiman the Magnificent" and in English it is literally translated as "Magnificent Century" tells us the story of how Prince Suleiman ascended to the throne of the Ottoman Empire after the death of his father, On the other hand, we see how Alexandra, a beautiful young Russian woman, daughter of an Orthodox priest, is kidnapped along with other girls by the Tartars, while they murder her entire family, later Alexandra and the girls were transferred to Istanbul to be sold to the palace. From Sultan Suleiman, upon arriving there, the young woman, who was reluctant to her new life, is instructed by a eunuch and other palace workers for the Sultan's entertainment, she had to learn writing, manners, dance and embroidery. At first Alexandra was rebellious at the idea of trying to brighten the life of someone who bought slaves, but after the advice of one of the characters, she changes her mind because she is tired of suffering for being weak, now she wants to become the most powerful woman. powerful of the empire.
"Muhtesem Yüzyil", mejor conocida en español como "Suleimán el magnífico" y en inglés sí es traducida literalmente como "Siglo Magnífico" nos cuenta la historia de como el príncipe Suleimán ascendió al trono del imperio otomano luego de la muerte de su padre, por otra parte vemos como Alexandra, una preciosa joven rusa, hija de un sacerdote ortodoxo, es raptada junto con otras chicas por los Tártaros, mientras ellos asesinan a toda su familia, posteriormente Alexandra y las chicas fueron trasladadas a Estámbul para ser vendidas al palacio del Sultán Suleiman, al llegar allí, la joven, quien se mostraba reticente a su nueva vida, es instruida por un eunuco y otros trabajadores del palacio para el entretenimiento del Sultán, ella debía aprender escritura, modales, danza y bordado. This is how Alexandra managed to conquer the heart of Sultan Suleiman, she quickly began to climb the ranks of the Harem, displacing even his first wife, Sultan Mahidevran, soon Alexandra left her old life behind, her nationality, her Christian religion and even her name, as the Sultan gave her a new one, "Hurrem" which means "the laughing one" due to her cheerful personality and her ability to entertain the Sultan by telling stories. However, becoming the most powerful woman in the empire was not going to be an easy task, although Hurrem sired five sons, none of them could ascend to the throne because Prince Mustafa, son of Sultan Mahidevran, was the first-born, so there were many conspiracies and battles for power inside and outside the harem.
Fue así como Alexandra logró conquistar el corazón del Sultán Suleimán, rápidamente comenzó a escalar posiciones en el Harem, desplazando incluso a su primera esposa, la sultana Mahidevran, pronto Alexandra dejó su antigua vida atrás, su nacionalidad, su religión cristiana y hasta su nombre, ya que el sultán le otorgo uno nuevo, "Hurrem" que significa "la risueña" debido a su personalidad alegre y su habilidad para entretener al Sultán contando cuentos. MY Opinion/Mi Opinión
Wow! there are many things to say about this series but the first one is that in general terms it is very faithful to the events that really happened, both inside and outside the palace of Topkapı, every battle to expand the Ottoman empire and of course Hurrem's struggle to go from being a helpless slave to the first Haseki Sultan, that is, the most powerful woman in the empire, not without having committed some barbarities, of course. However, as for the story, there is one point that strikes me, and that is that the series eventually shows Ibrahim Pasha as an opportunistic man, who took advantage of the Sultan's trust to acquire more and more power and who dreamed of becoming a sultan himself, yet the story tells us that he was a generous man, who used his position to help the people, and for that reason he is remembered as a good man and in fact his execution was considered unjust.
Wow! hay muchas cosas que decir con respecto a esta serie pero la primera de ellas es que en términos general es muy fiel a los hechos que ocurrieron realmente, tanto dentro como fuera del palacio de Topkapı, cada batalla por expandir el imperio otomano y desde luego la lucha de Hurrem por pasar de ser una esclava indefensa a la primera Haseki Sultán, es decir, la mujer más poderosa del imperio, no sin antes haber cometido algunas barbaridades, desde luego. Sin embargo en cuanto a la historia, hay un punto que me llama la atención, y es que la serie eventualmente nos muestra a Ibrahim Paşa como un hombre oportunista, que se aprovechó de la confianza del Sultán para adquirir cada vez más poder y que soñaba con convertirse él mismo en un sultán, sin embargo la historia nos dice que él fue un hombre generoso, que usó su cargo para ayudar al pueblo, y por esa razón es recordado como un buen hombre y de hecho su ejecución fue considerada injusta.
As for the performances, I can't say anything else but that they are absolutely wonderful, every gesture seems so authentic that it is impossible not to feel inside the story, every dialogue is very well executed by the actors who put a lot of feeling and passion into their acting, I think one of the best is without a doubt the German stunt actress Meryem Uzerli who played Hurrem Sultan, this woman did her job so well that I came to hate her character, seriously because even though I realised that most of the audience justified her vile actions, I just never saw her as a heroine, I don't understand how she could fall in love with Sileiman and forget about her roots, her parents, her religion, her country, everything, she always had an insistence on getting rid of Mustafa, knowing that he was crown prince by nature, on the other hand Mahidevran was already the sultan's wife before she came to the palace, even so I don't justify Mahidevran because he was also a bad person. Hurrem also attacked every harem girl who was requested in the Sultan's private chamber, as if they had any choice to object, she even attacked her best friend when she was summoned by the Sultan. Actually I think there are very, very few characters I can consider noble, in fact only Maria (Hurrem's friend) Leo (Hurrem's ex-boyfriend) and Nasuh Efendi.
En cuanto a las actuaciones, no puedo decir otra cosa más que son absolutamente maravillosas, cada gesto parece tan auténtico que es imposible no sentirse dentro de la historia, cada diálogo está muy bien ejecutado por los actores quienes le imprimen mucho sentimiento y pasión a su actuación, creo que una de las mejores es sin lugar a dudas la actriz truco alemana Meryem Uzerli quien interpretó a Hurrem Sultán, esta mujer hizo tan bien su trabajo que yo llegué a odiar su personaje, en serio porque a pesar de que me di cuenta de que la mayoría de la audiencia justificaba sus viles acciones, yo simplemente nunca la vi como a una heroína, no entiendo como pudo enamorarse de Sileimán y olvidarse de sus raíces, sus padres, su religión, su país, todo, además siempre tuvo una insistencia en deshacerse de Mustafá, sabiendo que él era príncipe heredero por naturaleza, por otra parte Mahidevran ya era esposa del sultán desde antes que ella llegara al palacio, aún así no justifico a Mahidevran porque también fue mala persona. Hurrem además atacaba a cada muchacha del harem que era solicitada en la cámara privada del Sultán, como si ellas hubiesen tenido opción de oponerse, incluso atacó a su mejor amiga cuando fue convocada por el Sultán. En realidad creo que hay muy pero muy pocos personajes a los que puedo considerar nobles, de hecho solo a María (amiga de Hurrem) Leo (ex novio de Hurrem) y Nasuh Efendi.
But Vahide Perçin, the actress who later played the same character was not left behind, she knew how to rely on Meryem Uzerli's interpretation, the same gestures, the same way of expressing herself, wow! This woman put passion into her work, in this way, despite noticing that it was evidently someone else who played the character, we never felt that Hurrem's was there, she was always there.
Pero Vahide Perçin, la actriz que posteriormente interpretó el mismo personaje no se quedó atrás, ella supo como apoyarse en la interpretación de Meryem Uzerli, los mismos gestos, la misma forma de expresarse ¡Vaya! Esta mujer le puso pasión a su trabajo, de esta forma, a pesar de notar que evidentemente era otra persona quien interpretaba el personaje, nunca sentimos que Hurrem s fue, siempre estuvo ahí.
But I can't leave aside the way the actress Selma Ergeç carried her character Hatice, she was really great, her character is quite complex, but she knew how to execute it in a superb way, Hatice is an insecure woman, depressive but also vengeful and determined when she sets her mind to it. I remember how much I was moved by this woman in the scene where her baby dies, she looked mad with grief.
Pero no puedo dejar de lado forma en que la actriz Selma Ergeç llevó a su personaje Hatice, de verdad fue grandiosa, su personaje es bastante complejo, pero ella supo como ejecutarlo de una manera soberbia, Hatice es una mujer insegura, depresiva pero también vengativa y determinada cuando se lo propone. Recuerdo cuanto me conmovió esta mujer en la escena donde muere su bebé, se veía loca de dolor.

I also can't get away from how much I enjoyed the eunuchs Sümbül Ağa and Gül Ağa, it's so much fun when they argue, these characters are kind of the relief of the tense moments in the plot, although many times they are the ones in the middle of the tension. I liked the fact that the production took the trouble to give depth to one of them, Sümbül Ağa, when he told Hurrem about his past, when he was abducted and subsequently castrated to serve as a eunuch in the palace.
Tampoco puedo dejar de lado lo mucho que he disfrutado con los eunucos Sümbül Ağa y Gül Ağa, es muy divertido cuando discuten, estos personajes son algo así como el alivio de los momentos tensos en la trama, aunque muchas veces son ellos los que están en medio de la tensión. Me gustó el hecho de que la producción se tomara el trabajo de darle profundidad a uno de ellos, Sümbül Ağa, cuando le contó a Hurrem como fue su pasado, cuando fue raptado y posteriormente castrado para servir como eunuco en el palacio.
The costumes are amazing, absolutely beautiful, I love the colours, the fabric, EVERYTHING, although, I must admit that according to what I know about the history of that time, the costumes we see in the series have nothing to do with what people actually wore at that time in Turkey.
El vestuario es asombroso, absolutamente hermoso, me encantan los colores, la tela, TODO, aunque, debo reconocer que según lo que sé sobre la historia de esa época, el vestuario que vemos en la serie no tiene nada que ver con el que llevaba realmente la gente en esa época en Turquía.
And one of the best things we can find in this series throughout all its seasons is the magnificent soundtrack it has, really, you have to hear it, each melody accompanies the scenes very well, although I must admit that in the first season there was one of those themes that certainly repeated it too much, especially in the scenes of Ibrahim and Hatice, so much so that it was tedious, but the rest was a good balance, especially I like the opening theme.
Y una de las mejores cosas que podemos encontrar en esta serie a lo largo de todas sus temporadas es el magnifico soundtrack que tiene, de verdad, ustedes tienen que oírlo, cada melodía acompaña muy bien las escenas, aunque debo reconocer que en la primera temporada hubo uno de esos temas que ciertamente lo repitieron demasiado, sobre todo en las escenas de Ibrahim y Hatice, tanto que resultó tedioso, pero del resto hubo un buen equilibrio, sobre todo me gusta el tema de apertura.
It really has been a great series, so much that I got terribly hooked to it, each chapter is very addictive, and I didn't used to watch Turkish series 😄 but at least this one, I recommend it. This is bound to be a very fierce battle for the throne as l sense some rivalry in there. I’ve not been able to watch any series of late due to time constraints. I’ll look for a good action series soon.
