My Little Cousin's Baby Shower [ESP/ENG]

Hace unas semanas tuvimos una inesperada invitación a un evento muy bonito, y digo "inesperada" porque a pesar de que por mucho tiempo se estuvo hablando de los preparativos para el Baby Shower de mi primo, al final de cuentas nunca se concretaba nada ya que los padres del bebé (mi primo y su esposa) trabajan demasiado, él como director de una escuela secundaria y ella en la administración de la zona educativa de la región, así que realmente siempre están ocupados, así que al parecer la oportunidad llegó de repente y así, intempestivamente ellos armaron todo para el agasajo del próximo miembro de la familia, será mi primo pero en nuestra familia tenemos la costumbre de llamar "sobrinos" a a los hijos de los primos.
A few weeks ago, we received an unexpected invitation to a lovely event. I say "unexpected" because, although there had been talk for a long time about preparations for my cousin's baby shower, nothing ever actually materialized; the baby's parents—my cousin and his wife—work incredibly hard. He is a high school principal and she works in regional educational administration, so they are always busy. It seems the opportunity arose suddenly, and they quickly pulled everything together to celebrate the family's newest addition. He is my cousin, but in our family, we have a custom of calling our cousins' children "nephews" and "nieces."
Cuando llegamos al lugar yo estaba absolutamente feliz, no solo por el acontecimiento sino porque am los días nublados (no me juzguen pero tengo la personalidad de Allan Poe, medio melancólica y... peculiar jeje) había una piscina y los niños no perdieron la oportunidad de darse una buena zambullida pero yo ni pensé en eso jaja tenía frío.
When we arrived, I was absolutely happy—not just because of the occasion, but because I love cloudy days (don't judge me, but I have an Edgar Allan Poe kind of personality: sort of melancholic and... peculiar, hehe). There was a pool, and the kids didn't miss the chance to jump right in, but I didn't even consider it—haha, I was cold.
Luego me dio tanto frío que tuve que ponerme un abrigo, el ambiente seguía lluvioso y el piso incluso estaba fangoso en algunas zonas pero eso no me quitó la curiosidad de ir a recorrer la finca para ver como era, y de esta manera mis pasos me condujeron hacia los arbustos de flores. Nunca he sido una persona romántica pero siento una gran debilidad por las flores en estado natural (no en macetas ni ramos sino en arbustos, en la tierra a donde pertenecen)
Then I got so cold that I had to put on a coat; the weather remained rainy and the ground was even muddy in places, but that didn't dampen my curiosity to explore the estate and see what it was like, and so my steps led me toward the flowering shrubs. I have never been a romantic person, but I have a real weakness for flowers in their natural state—not in pots or bouquets, but on the bushes, in the earth where they belong.
Lo más hermoso de las fiestas familiares es que cada quién asume un rol diferente no solo en la planificación del evento sino en la ejecución del mismo. Mi mamá y yo por ejemplo nos dedicamos a organizar las mesas y a ubicar a los invitados, otros se ocuparon de buscar el sonido parala música, algunos se dedicaron a cocinar, mientras mi tío y mi papá se dedicaban a preparar la leña donde se haría una sopa para más tarde. Allí pueden ver a mi tío que es quién ya estaba adelantando el trabajo, a él le fascina dedicarse a las spas y asados jeje.
The best part of family gatherings is that everyone takes on a different role, not just in planning the event but in carrying it out. My mom and I, for instance, handled setting up the tables and seating the guests; others took charge of the sound system for the music, and some focused on the cooking, while my uncle and dad prepared the firewood for the soup we’d have later. You can see my uncle there getting a head start on the work—he absolutely loves handling the soups and the barbecues, haha.
Creo que una de las cosas más bonitas de este tipo de evento es poder compartir momentos lindos y especiales con la familia, así como hemos compartido momentos de dolor, así como nos hemos abrazado para llorar en esos momentos en que la carga es muy pesada, así mismo debemos abrazarnos para compartir la alegría, en este caso de una nueva vida que se acerca, compartir bendiciones y buenos deseos, no faltaron las risas, los bailes y als fotos, tampoco esos parientes y amigos que teníamos tiempo sin ver. El abrazo fue largo y tendido y desde luego nos pusimos al día contando anécdotas y disfrutando de nuestra compañía. Todo esto me hace pensar, y en especial luego de los últimos dolorosos acontecimientos en mi país (Venezuela) en lo afortunados que somos de poder tener una familia, esta fiesta fue mucho antes del terremoto (y gracias a Dios en nuestra ciudad no ocurrió nada en comparación con otras zonas del país) no perdimos a ningún familiar, gracias a Dios, pero me hizo pensar en la fragilidad de los seres humanos y cuanto debemos apreciar los momentos como estos, y en especial agradecerlos.
I think one of the loveliest things about this kind of event is the chance to share beautiful, special moments with family. Just as we have shared moments of pain—embracing and weeping together when the burden felt too heavy—we should also embrace to share in the joy; in this instance, the joy of a new life on the way, and the sharing of blessings and good wishes. There was no shortage of laughter, dancing, and photos, nor of reunions with relatives and friends we hadn't seen in a long time. We shared long, heartfelt hugs and, of course, caught up by swapping stories and simply enjoying each other's company. All of this—especially in light of recent painful events in my country (Venezuela)—makes me reflect on how fortunate we are to have a family. This celebration took place well before the earthquake (and thank God, our city was spared compared to other parts of the country; we didn't lose any family members), yet it made me think about human fragility and how deeply we ought to cherish—and, above all, be grateful for—moments like these.
La decoración estuvo preciosa, a cargo de otra de mis primas (la que ama las manualidades) El nuevo integrante de la familia se llamará Fabrizio, el cuál me parece un nombre muy bonito.
The decorations were lovely, handled by another one of my cousins (the one who loves crafts). The newest member of the family will be named Fabrizio—a name I find very beautiful.
Luego llegó la noche, el evento terminó, mi primo (el padre del bebé) se encargó de llevar a algunos de los invitados a sus casas y eso nos incluía a mis padres y a mi, pero nos dimos cuenta de que estaba tardando demasiado, incluso empezábamos a preocuparnos, pero lo que sucedió fue que él se había perdido en una de las direcciones que le dieron y le costó salir de la zona donde estaba, nosotros en el lugar de la fiesta ya estábamos cansados y queríamos regresar, para colmo se fue la luz (aunque no duró demasiado tiempo de apagón) peor lo que sí me preocupaba era que mi hermana había llegado a casa del trabajo y no se había llevado las llaves, ya era tarde como para refugiarse en casa de algún vecino, así que valiéndose del ingenio bajó la ventanilla del nuestro carro para alcanzar el seguro y abrir la puerta, entonces se refugió allí hasta que llegamos.
Then night fell and the event ended; my cousin (the baby's father) was in charge of driving some of the guests home—including my parents and me—but we realized he was taking far too long and even started to get worried. It turned out he had gotten lost following one of the sets of directions he’d been given and struggled to find his way out of the area where he was. Meanwhile, back at the party venue, we were tired and eager to head home; to make matters worse, the power went out (though the blackout didn't last long). What really worried me, however, was that my sister had arrived home from work without her keys. It was too late to seek shelter at a neighbor's house, so, using a bit of ingenuity, she rolled down the car window to reach the lock and open the door, taking refuge inside until we arrived.
Y aunque sí fue una situación estresante, bueno... es una anécdota más jeje.
And even though it was a stressful situation, well... it's just another story, heh.
