Oz The Great and Powerful (Review) ESP/ENG
I've wanted to see this film for a long time, I mean "Oz The Great and Powerful", but for some reason I never did, however yesterday I finally got the chance to see what it was about, honestly I didn't have many expectations about it, but the truth is that I was pleasantly surprised with this film, it was not what I expected, but something much better (and coincidentally this last thing I said is an important part of the plot, you will see why).
Hace mucho tiempo que quise ver esta película, me refiero a Oz, El Poderoso, pero por alguna razón nunca lo hacía, sin embargo ayer se dio la oportunidad y finalmente pude ver de qué se trataba, honestamente no tenía muchas expectativas al respecto, pero la verdad es que quedé gratamente sorprendida con este film, no fue lo que yo esperaba, sino algo mucho mejor (y casualmente esto último que les digo forma parte importante de la trama, ya verán porqué)
Summary/Resumen
Oscar is a magician who works in a circus in Kansas City, the guy is a con man, a scoundrel, who uses all his wiles to cheat people and make money, plus he feels no remorse for it nor for breaking the hearts of the ladies, however, after his deceptions were discovered, while trying to escape in a hot air balloon, he gets caught in a storm and later realizes that he is no longer in Kansas, but in a different land, inhabited by peculiar people, but what caught his attention the most, was that he was suddenly involved in a great commitment to the people of that strange land because of a prophecy that could change his life drastically.
Oscar es un mago que trabaja en un circo en la ciudad de Kansas, el tipo es un timador, sinvergüenza, que usa todas sus artimañas para engañar a las personas y ganar dinero, además no siente ningún remordimiento por ello ni tampoco por romper los corazones de las damas, sin embargo, luego de que sus engaños fueron descubiertos, mientras intentaba escapar en un globo aerostático, queda atrapado en una tormenta y posteriormente se da cuenta de que ya no está en Kansas, sino en una tierra diferente, habitada por personas peculiares, pero lo que más llamó su atención, fue que de pronto se vio envuelto en un gran compromiso con las personas de esa extraña tierra por causa de una profecía que podrá cambiar su vida drásticamente.

My Opinion/Mi Opinion
There were many elements that I loved in this film but first of all I will talk about the cinematography, it is beautiful and every aspect is very well taken care of, for example, at the beginning, while Oscar is in Kansas, the format of the film is in black and white, and I think this can have two interpretations, on the one hand it can be taken as a nod to the popular and controversial 1939 film starring Judy Garland, but on the other hand I also interpret it as Oscar's grey and meaningless life while he was a truculent and lying guy.
Hubo muchos elementos que amé en este film pero en primer lugar hablaré de la fotografía, es hermosa y cada aspecto está muy bien cuidado, por ejemplo, al inicio, mientras Oscar está en Kansas, el formato de la película es en blanco y negro, y creo que esto puede tener dos interpretaciones, por un lado se puede tomar como un guiño a la popular y polémica película de 1939 protagonizada por Judy Garland, pero por otra parte también la interpreto como la vida gris y sin sentido de Oscar mientras era un tipo truculento y mentiroso.
I loved the transition from black and white to colour as Oscar realised that he was alive, that he had received a second chance, he feels grateful and with new strength, therefore the colours we see around the main character are quite intense and sharp, the production did a great job with the CGI, Wow! I especially loved the scenes where Oscar's balloon passes near the waterfalls and we can notice how the rainbows are formed when the light goes through the water particles. I also liked the scene where the flowers open up to welcome the new "Wizard" of Oz, this scene reminded me a lot of Alice in Wonderland.
Amé la transición de blanco y negro a color conforme Oscar se daba cuenta de que estaba vivo, que había recibido una segunda oportunidad, él se siente agradecido y con nuevas fuerzas, por lo tanto los colores que vemos al rededor del personaje principal son bastante intensos y nítidos, la producción hizo un magnifico trabajo con el CGI, Wow! sobre todo amé las escenas donde el globo de Oscar pasa cerca de las cascadas y podemos notar como se forman los arcoíris cuando la luz atraviesa las partículas de agua. También me gustó la escena donde las flores se abren a su paso para recibir al nuevo "Mago" de Oz, esta escena me recordó mucho a Alicia en el País de las Maravillas.
Another element that I loved, wholeheartedly, in this film was its story, as it is a prequel that makes sense of the main question that remains for the viewers of the 1939 film, which is how the "wizard" arrived in the Emerald City, although I confess that I would have liked to know the origin of Dorothy's famous red shoes, but I think that question would have been better answered in any of the three books of the saga that I have not yet had the pleasure of reading.
Otro de los elementos que amé, de todo corazón en esta película fue su historia, ya que es una precuela que le da sentido a la principal duda que nos queda a los espectadores de la película de 1939 y que es como llegó el mago a la ciudad Esmeralda, aunque les confieso que me hubiese gustado conocer el origen de los famosos zapatos rojos de Dorothy, sin embargo creo que esa pregunta estaría mejor respondida en cualquiera de los tres libros de la saga que aún no he tenido el placer de leer.
Another important aspect of this story is the tremendous evolution that Oz (Oscar) had as he realised his mistakes and how much his actions could hurt others, even his attitude was decisive in the involution of Theodora, although we could also argue that she already had some evil inside her, which she only exposed when she got angry, even so we also have to recognise that her sister Evanora was the spark that lit the fire of evil.
Otro de los aspectos importantes en esta historia es la tremenda evolución que tuvo Oz (Oscar) a medida que se daba cuenta de sus errores y lo mucho que sus acciones podían llegar a lastimar a los otros, incluso, su actitud fue determinante en la involución de Theodora, aunque también podríamos alegar que ella ya poseía algo de maldad en su interior, que solo dejaba al descubierto cuando se enojaba, aún así también tenemos que reconocer que su hermana Evanora fue la chispa que encendió el fuego de la maldad.
What I loved most about Oscar's evolution was that he was able to understand that he could use his truculent abilities for good, beyond his own benefit, he is a great admirer of Thomas Alva Edison, therefore this admiration leads him to have a great idea which in turn also clears up a doubt about the supposed power of the Wizard in the first film. Oz is not a real wizard, he is not what everyone in the Emerald City expected him to be, but they soon realise that he was what they needed, which in turn gives us great life lessons, we often get what we want in a different way than we expected.
Lo que más amé de la evolución de Oscar fue que pudo comprender que podía utilizar sus habilidades truculentas en función del bien, más allá del beneficio propio, es un gran admirador de Thomas Alva Edison, por lo tanto esta admiración lo lleva a tener una idea estupenda que a su vez también despeja una duda acerca del supuesto poder del Mago en la primera película. Oz no es un mago real, no es lo que todos en Ciudad Esmeralda esperaban que fuese, pero pronto se dan cuenta de que él era lo que necesitaban, lo que a su vez nos da grandes lecciones de vida, a menudo obtenemos lo que queremos de una manera distinta a la que esperábamos.
The scene where Oz convinces the wicked witches and the people of the Emerald City of his supposed powers is reminiscent of the dawn of the early 20th century, when magic shows and illusionism were at their peak and even cinema used these elements to add value to its works.
La escena donde Oz convence a las brujas malas y a la gente de Ciudad Esmeralda de sus supuestos poderes guarda relación con los albores de principios del siglo XX, cuando los espectáculos de magia e ilusionismo estaban en su máxima cúspide e incluso el cine se servía de estos elementos para darle un valor agregado a sus obras.
The characters I liked the most were the China Girl and Finley, the winged monkey, he is very funny and tender, his dialogues made me laugh more than once because he is a coward, as for the porcelain girl she is also tender and her appearance was very important because with her we discover that Oz is capable of doing something for someone without receiving something in return, she is the one who allows him to discover that he is not far from being a great man, as he wished. At first Oz says that he wants to be a great man rather than a good man, but step by step he discovers that the two adjectives are closely linked.
Los personajes que más me gustaron fueron la niña de porcelana y Finley, el mono alado, él es muy gracioso y tierno, sus dialogos me hicieron reír más de una vez debido a que es un cobarde, en cuanto a la niña de porcelana también es tierna y su aparición fue muy importante ya que con ella descubrimos que Oz es capaz de hacer algo por alguien sin recibir algo a cambio, es quien le permite descubrir que no está lejos de ser un gran hombre, tal como era su deseo. Al principio Oz dice que quiere ser un gran hombre en lugar de un hombre bueno, pero poco a poco descubre que ambos adjetivos están estrechamente ligados.

I loved the scenery, you can't imagine my excitement when I saw the famous yellow road and also the castle of Emerald City, it was really beautiful.
Amé la escenografía, no pueden imaginar mi emoción cuando vi el famoso camino amarillo y también el castillo de Ciudad Esmeralda, fue algo de verdad hermoso.
And as for the soundtrack, wow! I can't complain at all, both the main theme of the film and the secondary ones are great, I especially liked the one we hear when Oz, Finley and the porcelain girl are stalking the supposedly evil witch, it really provides a dark and sinister atmosphere.
Y en cuanto al soundtrack ¡Wow! no puedo quejarme en lo absoluto, tanto el tema principal de la película como los secundarios son geniales, sobre todo me gustó el que escuchamos cuando Oz, Finley y la niña de porcelana están asechando a la supuesta bruja malvada, de verdad que proporciona una ambientación oscura y siniestra.
At the time this film did not receive good reviews at all and I think that was part of the reason why it took me so long to see it, however, as I said, I was pleasantly surprised, maybe many people expected to see a remake of the 1939 film, however I think this film is a wonderful prequel, the performances are different from the first film because evidently the acting style changed after so many years, now it is much less dramatic and more realistic, I do believe that James Franco played his character very well, I could feel his arrogance and little empathy at the beginning of the film, and later I perceived the change of attitude, even in his look.
En su momento esta película no recibió buenas críticas en lo absoluto y creo que fue en parte la razón por la cual tardé tanto en verla, sin embargo, tal como les dije, yo quedé gratamente sorprendida, tal vez muchas personas esperaban ver un remake del film de 1939, sin embargo yo creo que esta película es una maravillosa precuela, las actuaciones son diferentes a la primera película porque evidentemente el estilo de actuación cambió luego de tantos años, ahora es mucho menos dramático y más realista, yo sí creo que James Franco interpretó muy bien su personaje, pude sentir su arrogancia y poca empatía al principio del film, y posteriormente percibí el cambio de actitud, incluso en su mirada.

Jaja, recuerdo haber visto esta wea en el cine y conmoverme con la escena donde Ozcar le pega la pierna a la muñeca de porcelana, es una lástima que no tuviera continuación, de por sí esperaba ver al espanta pájaros, al hombre de ojalata o al león al menos, pero no salió ni Dorothy :c.
Mucha gente esperaba ver a los personajes de la primera película, pero no podían estar allí ya que se trata de una precuela, no de un remake, por lo tanto es un film que nos ambienta muchos años antes de la llegada de Dorothy y sus amigos a Ciudad Esmeralda, aún así me hubiese encantado una segunda parte de esta película, que sí, esta vez efectivamente fuese un remake para poder ver la continuación.

I have not seen this film. Now, The Wizard of Oz I saw many years ago, I think I have a dvd copy saved and since you reminded me of that film, I'm going to look it up to watch it again, maybe I'll be encouraged to do a review of that classic.
Yes, that's a great classic indeed, full of a lot of symbolism too, obviously the setting and special effects leave a lot to be desired compared to today's standards, but for 1939 they were really great.
Vi está película pero la verdad que no fue del todo mi agrado, no me gustó mucho ya que no conecte con ella debido su historia.
De todas manera muy buena reseña, siempre he dicho que todo es cuestión de gusto de cada quien y es bueno ver las diversas opiniones.

Sí, claro, en efecto, tal y como dije, entre gustos y colores no han escrito los autores 😄 a mí me encantó por ser una precuela que me despeja las dudas del film anterior, pero si lo hubiese visto esperando un remake, obviamente me hubiese decepcionado.
Se oye muy interesante, estas peliculas que son como remakes de grandes clasicos por l ogeneral son buenas. Me llamó mucho la atención todo lo que relatas del film, saludos amiga.
En este caso no es un remake sino una precuela pero de verdad es grandiosa porque te despeja las dudas que te puedan quedar luego de ver el film de 1939, aún así me gustaría ver también una secuela. Muchas gracias por leer y comentar, amigo 😊

Recuerdo que la ví de pequeño en Disney Channel, creo que aún la tengo en dvd, cuando la ví me encantó, es demasiado divertida, y definitivamente está en el top de lo mejor que ha sacado Disney en cuanto a películas Live Action
Sí, en su momento recibió muchas críticas, pero es porque la gente está muy ligada al misticismo y todas las polémicas que causó el film de 1939, así que comparan esta película con esa, aún y cuando la historia es bastante diferente por tratarse de una precuela.
