Saint Onii san /Las Vacaciones de Buda y Jesús (Review)
Hello, my cinephile friends, today I bring you a review of a film that I saw some time ago and that left me pleasantly surprised, not only for its high artistic quality, but for its very risky narrative in which they could hurt susceptibilities, however, in my humble opinion I think they did a great job and not at all offensive, I am referring to "Saint Young Men" or "Saint Onii San" which is its original title, a film that puts us in context of how would be the experiences of these two holy men if they decided to go on holiday.
Hola, mis amigos cinéfilos, hoy les traigo una review de una película que vi hace algún tiempo y que me dejó gratamente sorprendida, no solo por su alta calidad artística, sino por su narrativa muy arriesgada en la cual podrían herir susceptibilidades, sin embargo, en mi humilde opinión creo que hicieron un trabajo estupendo y para nada ofensivo, me refiero a "Las Vacaciones de Buda y Jesús" o "Saint Onii San" que es su título original, una película que nos pone en contexto de como serían las vivencias de estos dos hombres santos si decidieran irse de vacaciones.
Buddha and Jesus decide to go on holiday anywhere in the world, so they choose at random and thus go to Japan, where they live several experiences as tourists, many of them quite funny but that put them in context of what humanity lives day by day on earth, but also allows them to know each other better.
Buda y Jesús deciden irse de vacaciones a cualquier lugar del mundo, así que eligen al azar y de esta forma se van a Japón, allá viven varias experiencias como turistas, muchas de ellas bastante graciosas pero que los ponen en contexto de lo que día a día vive la humanidad en la tierra, pero también les permite conocerse más el uno al otro.

One of the things that impressed me about this film is that, although it is full of funny situations in which the two main characters are involved, it is not offensive at all, and I say this as a Catholic Christian that I am, of course, although this will of course depend on the way of thinking of each viewer, but according to what I have read from both Buddhists and Christians, they agree with me and I think that it is very difficult to do something like this film without hurting susceptibilities, especially nowadays when more than one is offended by anything, nothing as dangerous as talking about politics, religion or even sport, so imagine what could happen if they decide to put the representatives of two of the world's most important religions in such an everyday context.
Una de las cosas por las cuales me impresionó este film es porque, si bien está plagado de situaciones graciosas en las que se desenvuelven los dos personajes principales, no resulta ofensivo para nada, y lo digo como cristiana católica que soy, claro, aunque esto desde luego dependerá de la forma de pensar de cada espectador, pero según lo que he leído tanto de budistas como cristianos, están de acuerdo conmigo y, vaya que hacer algo como esta película sin herir susceptibilidades es algo muy difícil de lograr, sobre todo hoy en día en el que más de uno se ofende por cualquier cosa, nada tan peligroso como hablar de política, religión o incluso deporte, así que imagínense lo que podría pasar si deciden meter en un contexto tan cotidiano a los representantes de dos religiones tan importantes en el mundo.
I felt that this film gave a more natural, human and attainable image to the characters, but not only that, it allowed us to learn a little more about Christian and Buddhist customs, their ways of thinking and why they act the way they do.
A mi me pareció que esta película les dio una imagen más natural, humana y alcanzable a los personajes pero no solo eso, nos permitió conocer un poco más de las costumbres cristianas y budistas, sus formas de pensar y porqué actúan como actúan.
One of the scenes I enjoyed the most and which I found very, very funny, is one where Jesus tries to convince Buddha to go on a roller coaster, but he refuses because he is afraid, however he agreed but regrets almost immediately arguing that this was an almost ascetic experience, he was so scared that he began to recite sutras until he reached nirvana to avoid the discomfort caused by the fear, Jesus instead looked at him with fear, trying to calm him down.
Una de las escenas que más disfruté y que me resultó muy pero muy graciosa, es una donde Jesús intenta convencer a Buda de subir a una montaña rusa, pero él se niega porque tiene miedo, sin embargo accedió pero se arrepiente casi enseguida aduciendo que esa era una experiencia casi ascética, estaba tan asustado que comenzó a recitar sutras hasta alcanzar el nirvana para evadir el malestar que le causaba el miedo, Jesús en cambio lo miraba con miedo, tratando de calmarlo.
Another scene I also enjoyed was when Jesus and Buddha were inside a sauna with none other than one of the members of the Yakuza (the Japanese mafia) the guy misunderstood the conversation he was having with Jesus, as he was telling him about the prison he was taken to for his crimes in which he served seven years, Jesus told him about his conviction from which he was released in only three days (referring to his own death in the Golgota) then the thug and his henchmen asked him how he had managed it, but Jesus in all his innocence replied that it was his father's will 🤣 the Yakuza members interpreted that answer to mean that Jesus' father was the leader of a truly powerful organisation.
Otra de las escenas que también disfruté fue cuando Jesús y Buda estaban dentro de un sauna junto a nada más y nada menos que uno de los miembros de la Yakuza (la mafia japonesa) el tipo malinterpretó la conversación que estaba teniendo con Jesús, pues le estaba hablando de la prisión a la que fue conducido por sus crímenes en la cual sirvió siete años, Jesús le habló de su condena de la cual se vio libre en solo tres días (refiriéndose a su propia muerte en el Golgota) entonces el matón y sus secuaces le preguntaron como lo había logrado, pero Jesús con toda su inocencia respondió que fue la voluntad de su padre 🤣 los miembros de la Yakuza interpretaron esa respuesta como que el padre de Jesús era el líder de una organización verdaderamente poderosa.
I think they are the perfect complement to each other, like those brothers with very different personalities but who need each other very much, in my opinion Buddha is sensible and balanced, while Jesus is very tender, innocent and even childish.
Creo que ambos son el complemento perfecto del otro, como esos hermanos con personalidades muy diferentes pero que se necesitan mucho, en mi opinión Buda es sensato y equilibrado, mientras que Jesús es muy tierno, inocente e incluso pueril.
But what I find most beautiful is that the fact that Jesus and Buddha treat each other as brothers is proof positive that there is no reason for humanity to continue to act in such a selfish way, they are an example for us to stop segregating ourselves and start seeing each other as one, to stop criticising and fighting, our ethnic, religious or political differences should not be a hindrance in our lives to form strong bonds of friendship.
Pero lo que me parece más bonito es que el hecho de que Jesús y Buda se traten como hermanos es la prueba fehaciente de que no hay razones para que la humanidad siga actuando de forma tan egoísta, ellos son un ejemplo para que dejemos de segregarnos y comencemos a vernos como si fuésemos uno solo, para que dejemos de criticarnos y de pelear, nuestras diferencias étnicas, religiosas o políticas no deberían ser un estorbo en nuestras vidas para formar lazos fuertes de amistad.
In general terms I can say that no matter if you are a Christian, Buddhist or even an atheist, either way you can enjoy this film and have a very good time, you will not feel offended, but grateful to see reflected the fact that it is possible to put aside our differences to live in peace, which will bring us a lot of happiness and peace of mind.
En términos generales puedo decir que no importa si eres cristiano, budista o incluso ateo, de cualquier forma puedes disfrutar de esta película y pasar un muy buen rato, no te sentirás ofendido, sino agradecido de ver reflejado el hecho de que sí es posible dejar de lado nuestras diferencias para vivir en paz, lo cual nos traerá mucha felicidad y tranquilidad.
