Hello friends, I recently came across this old movie again which I remember disturbed me when I was very little and it was shown on TV, because I was overly impressionable and could not understand that there were human beings with deformities, however, I recently came across this gem again and after feeling that I unlocked memories I started to watch it and found some very interesting things.
Hola amigos, recientemente me encontré de nuevo con esta antigua película la cual recuerdo que me inquietaba cuando era muy pequeña y la retransmitían por televisión, debido a que yo era excesivamente impresionable y no podía entender que existían seres humanos con deformidades, sin embargo, hace poco me encontré de nuevo con esta joya y luego de sentir que desbloqueaba recuerdos comencé a verla encontrando cosas muy interesantes.
Overview/Resumen
This American film is based on real life, specifically on the case of Roy Lee Dennis who suffered from a rare disease called craniodysplasia that caused him great deformities in his head and face, as well as severe headaches. The film delves into Rocky's life and the problems he had to deal with on a daily basis, not only because of his ailments, but also because of the rejection that his appearance provoked in other people, his mother had problems with drugs and led an irreverent lifestyle that contrasted with that of Rocky, He also dreamed of travelling the world with his best friend and both were saving up for it, but unfortunately they could not realise that dream because the disease finally defeated our protagonist, even so his personality left an indelible mark on this world.
Esta película estadounidense está basada en la vida real, específicamente en el caso de Roy Lee Dennis quien sufría de una rara enfermedad llamada displasia craneodiafisaria que le causaba grandes deformidades en su cabeza y rostro, además de fuertes dolores de cabeza. El film profundiza en la vida de Rocky y los problemas con los cuales tenía que lidiar a diario, no solo por causa de sus dolencias, sino por el rechazo que su apariencia provocaba en las demás personas, además su madre tenía problemas con las drogas y llevaba un estilo de vida irreverente que contrastaba con el de Rocky, que era muy aplicado en la escuela, él además soñaba con viajar por el mundo con su mejor amigo y ambos estaban ahorrando para eso, pero desafortunadamente no pudieron concretar ese sueño porque la enfermedad finalmente venció a nuestro protagonista, aún así su personalidad dejó una huella imborrable en este mundo.

My Opinion/Mi Opinión
I think the most important thing about this film is in its story and how it leads us to reflect on the prejudices that some people have about others and that prevents them from getting to know extraordinary people just because their appearance makes them uncomfortable or generates rejection, the film also gives us a more personal and unique perspective from the point of view of someone who suffers from this rejection, today we are perhaps used to seeing films of this style, but it was not like that in 1985. Rocky also had dreams and illusions like everyone else, he also had aspirations, his illness did not prevent him from feeling, and the fact that he was different did not give others the right to treat him as if he were a monster, which leads us to reflect on another point? Who is the real monster: someone who simply looks different from the rest, or the society that points the finger and causes pain with its prejudices?
Creo que lo más importante de esta película está en su historia y como nos lleva a reflexionar acerca de los prejuicios que algunas personas tienen sobre otras y que les impide llegar a conocer a gente extraordinaria solo porque su apariencia les incomoda o les genera rechazo, la película además nos ofrece una perspectiva más personal y única desde el unto de vista de alguien que padece este rechazo, hoy en día estamos acostumbrados quizá a ver películas de este estilo, pero no era así en 1985. Rocky también tenía sueños e ilusiones como todos los demás, también tenía aspiraciones, su enfermedad no le impedía sentir, y el hecho de ser diferente no le daba derecho a los demás a tratarlo como si fuese un monstruo, lo que nos lleva a reflexionar sobre otro punto... ¿Quién es el verdadero monstruo? ¿Alguien que simplemente luce diferente al resto o la sociedad que señala con el dedo y causa dolor con sus prejuicios?
The characterisation was wonderful, in fact this film won an Oscar for best make-up at the time, and the truth is that the work was so well done that it made me doubt whether the actor (Erick Stoltz) was a person with a real disability, but he was not. On the other hand the performances were wonderful and managed to generate the emotions that the characters demanded, especially being a true story, you can almost feel the pain and frustration of Rocky at the rejection of his girlfriend's parents, and the disappointment when his friend tells him that he will no longer join him on his journey around the world, at that moment he gives up and that is when the strength leaves him. Cher gave a very convincing performance, so much so that she was nominated for several awards, winning best actress at the Cannes Film Festival, but there is one scene in particular that tears at the heart of the audience, when she discovers that Rocky was already alive, a very painful scene indeed.
La caracterización estuvo maravillosa, de hecho esta película ganó un oscar al mejor maquillaje en ese tiempo, y la verdad es que el trabajo estuvo tan bien hecho que me hizo dudar acerca de si el actor (Erick Stoltz) era una persona con una discapacidad real, pero no fue así. Por otra parte las actuaciones estuvieron maravillosas y lograron generar las emociones que exigían los personajes, sobre todo tratándose de una historia real, casi se puede sentir el dolor y la frustración de Rocky ante el rechazo de los padres de su novia, y la decepción cuando su amigo le dice que ya no unirá a él en su viaje por el mundo, en ese momento se rinde y es cuando las fuerzas lo abandonan. Cher por su parte nos ofreció una actuación muy convincente, tanto así que fue nominada a varios premios, ganando el de mejor actriz en el festival de Cannes, peo hay una escena n particular que desgarra el corazón de los espectadores, y es cuando ella descubre que Rocky ya estaba vivo, de verdad es una escena muy dolorosa.
In short, it is an old film but with a very strong message that is quite valid these days, don't judge anyone, value people's feelings because they already have enough with their own problems without generating even more pain, we must become constructive and healing beings, in comfort and hope, not in pain, anguish or shame. En fin, es un film antiguo pero con un mensaje muy fuerte que está bastante vigente en estos días, no juzgues a nadie, valora los sentimientos de las personas porque ya bastante tienen con sus propios problemas como para generarles aún más dolor, debemos convertirnos en seres constructivos y sanadores, en consuelo y esperanza, no en dolor, angustia o vergüenza. Wow tambien desbloqueastes mis recuerdos jeje, recuerdo esa pelicula en la television, si es verdad que causaba impresión al ver el rostro del joven, pero tiene buen mensaje.
wow se ve muy emotiva y me identifico contigo amiga, también me sentía muy ansiosa cada vez que me topaba con personas discapacitadas, era un shock para mí porque no tenía esa capacidad de entender por qué había personas así, la película me parece importante ver porque se nota que tiene muy bonito mensaje.
