Overview/Resumen
Two young siblings, deeply unhappy at home because their stepmother was an evil witch who tormented them, decided to run away one day. They wandered across meadows, mountains, and forests; along the way, the brother grew thirsty and wanted to drink from a spring, but all the springs had been enchanted by the witch. Just as he was about to drink, the sister heard a voice say, "Whoever drinks from me shall turn into a tiger," so she begged him not to. They walked on and found another spring, but the girl heard it say, "Whoever drinks from me shall turn into a wolf." She pleaded with her brother not to drink, and he refrained, though he warned that he would drink from the next one regardless of whether it was enchanted. Sure enough, the third spring was enchanted, and the sister heard, "Whoever drinks from me shall turn into a roe deer." Despite his sister's pleas, the brother drank and was transformed; nevertheless, the two managed to live a peaceful life in the forest, and the sister even built a small house.
Dos hermanitos que eran muy desdichados en su casa ya que su madrastra era una bruja malvada que los atormentaba decidieron hui un día, de esta manera vagaron por praderas, montañas y bosques, en el camino el hermano sintió sed y quiso beber de una fuente, pero todas las fuentes estaban encantadas por la bruja, de modo que cuando estuvo a punto de beber la hermana oyó una voz que decía "Quien beba de mi se transformará en tigre" entonces ella le suplicó que no lo hiciera, siguieron caminando y encontraron otra fuente pero y la niña oyó que decía "Quien beba de mi se transformará en lobo" ella le suplicó a su hermano no beber y él no lo hizo pero advirtió que bebería de la próxima sin importar si estaba encantada o no, en efecto la tercera fuente lo estaba, y la hermana oyó "Quien beba de mi se transformará en Corzo (una especie de siervo)" y a pesar de las suplicas de la hermana, el hermano bebió y se transformó, aún así ambos lograron llevar una vida tranquila en el bosque, incluso la hermana construyó una casita.
Once, while out hunting, the king attempted to catch a roe deer, but upon discovering a young woman, he was captivated by her beauty and took both her and the deer back to his palace, intending to make her his wife; they married and lived happily, with the deer frolicking joyfully through the palace gardens. Time passed, and the royal couple had a young prince; however, an evil witch with a one-eyed daughter hatched a wicked plot: together, they seized the queen and locked her in the bathroom, setting the room ablaze, while the daughter—having assumed the queen's appearance—lay down in the royal bed. Eventually, however, the true queen reappeared alive and told the king what had happened; he punished the witch by condemning her to the stake and sentenced the daughter to wander the forest, where she was torn apart by wild beasts.
En una ocasión cuando estaban de cacería, el rey intentó cazar al corzo pero cuando descubrió a la joven se prendó de su belleza y se la llevó a su palacio junto con el corzo, pues quería convertirla en su esposa, ambos se casaron y fueron felices, el corzo corría alegremente por los jardines del palacio, el tiempo pasó y la pareja real tuvo un pequeño príncipe, sin embargo la malvada bruja que tenía una hija tuerta llevó a cabo un malvado plan, entre ambas tomaron a la reina y la encerraron en el baño, prendiéndole fuego a la habitación, mientras la hija (que había tomado la apariencia de la reina) se acostaba en su lecho, sin embargo con el tiempo la reina verdadera apareció viva y le contó al rey lo sucedido, de modo que él castigó a la bruja condenándola a la hoguera, y a la hija la condenó a vagar por el bosque donde fue despedazada por fieras salvajes
My Opinion/Mi Opinión
As with all fairy tales—and especially those by the Brothers Grimm—the central theme here is the struggle between good and evil; yet, despite the barbaric acts and graphic deaths (elements the beloved Grimm brothers also accustomed us to), the story prompts us to reflect on resilience, courage, and sibling loyalty. The siblings refused to simply remain in their home or resign themselves to mistreatment; knowing that fleeing would be arduous, they chose to face challenges rather than continue enduring humiliation and abuse under their own roof—a testament to their bravery and willingness to confront the unknown. Furthermore, they complemented each other so well that they made a great team despite their obvious differences; the bond of loyalty between brother and sister was so strong that it remained unbroken by the spell, keeping them united even after they were transformed into different species.
Al igual que en todos los cuentos, y en especial los de los hermanos Grimm, el tema principal en este es la lucha del bien contra el mal, pero a pesar de las acciones bárbaras y las muertes explícitas (algo a lo que también nos tienen acostumbrados los adorables hermanos Grimm) la historia nos hace reflexionar acerca de la resiliencia, el valor y la lealtad fraternal, los hermanos no se resignaron a permanecer en su propia casa, no se acostumbraron a los maltratos, sabían que huir sería duro y difícil, pero prefirieron enfrentar desafíos antes que seguir soportando humillaciones y malos tratos en su propia casa, eso habla de valor y coraje, de enfrentarse a lo desconocido, por otra parte ambo se complementaban tan bien que supieron hacer un buen equipo a pesar de las diferencias obvias, la lealtad entre hermano y hermana era tan grande que no se diluyó con el hechizo, continuaron siendo unidos a pesar de convertirse en especies diferentes.
The stepmother symbolizes envy, wickedness, and greed; the spells she cast upon the forest springs represent the obstacles life itself brings—difficulties that can sometimes be overcome and at other times cannot—and could even represent temptations.
La madrastra simboliza la envidia, la maldad y la codicia, sus hechizos que encantaron las fuentes del bosque representan los obstáculos que trae la vida misma, las dificultades que algunas veces pueden ser sorteadas y en otras no, incluso podría también representar las tentaciones.
Another thing that caught my attention—and that I forgot to mention—is that when the two brothers lived in the forest, he could not resist the temptation to go out and frolic in the woods whenever he heard the hunting horn; in other words, he exposed himself to danger, yet paradoxically, it was precisely this that led the king to them—a detail that speaks to us of destiny, and of how everything that happens in life leads us toward something.
Otra cosa que me llamó la atención y que olvidé mencionar, es que cuando ambos hermanos vivían en el bosque él no podía resistir la tentación de salir a retozar en el bosque al oír el cuerno de caza, es decir que se exponía al peligro pero paradójicamente fue esto lo que condujo al rey ante ellos, y esto nos habla del destino, de como todo lo que sucede en la vida nos conduce a algo.
The boy's transformation into a roe deer can symbolize the loss of innocence but also a profound connection with nature; nature, in turn, can represent both danger and refuge—a very interesting duality.
La transformación del niño en Corzo puede simbolizar la pérdida de la inocencia pero también una gran conexión con la naturaleza, y esta a su vez puede representar peligro y refugio a la vez, es una dualidad muy interesante.
