A few days ago, I was telling you about the new varieties of alfajores available on the market in Argentina, and the truth is that when you see them all together, it makes you want to buy one of each to taste and compare flavors. But in my case, after comparing them, I settled on one that combined several flavors I like—the one called “Barrigón”—because it wasn’t just another one of the bunch; it was a brownie turned into an alfajor.

When you open the package, a large circle of chocolate kicks off this taste adventure without disappointing visually, since the coating is dark chocolate—my favorite—and because it sits atop the brownie, which has a soft texture, you can see the crackled effect that invites you not to bite into it, but to break it open by hand to reveal the layer of dulce de leche inside that binds together both halves of what serves as a substitute for the original cookie.

The sensation upon the first bite is one of a very smooth texture, packed with layered flavors—bitter, sweet, very sweet, and bitter again. It feels like a roller-coaster ride for the taste buds; rather than being overly sweet, it balances the flavors so it doesn’t feel excessive at first, allowing you to enjoy the entire treat.

However, unlike the traditional alfajor, this one is meant to be eaten slowly; it’s not just a cookie to satisfy a sugar craving, but rather a dessert to be savored, taking the time to enjoy each flavor and taste each ingredient separately.

In my case, the part I enjoyed the most was the coating, since I’m a fan of dark chocolate, and although my plan was just to try a bite and then share it with my youngest son—who loves dulce de leche—I ended up eating the whole thing without even realizing it.

In conclusion, this is a treat meant to be eaten as a dessert, not for breakfast—as many Argentines tend to do—and although I loved the flavor, I think I’d rather eat the brownie, dulce de leche, and dark chocolate separately.

¡Aprobado!

Buenas noches, feliz descanso.
