When we make a TBT it is usually remembering how we were before, or events that happened to us long ago. But in this case, my TBT is only partly mine, because through it I would like to remember a great friend, teacher, godmother and so many beautiful adjectives, that I would lack characters to describe her.

Her name: Laura Helena Valdivieso Florido, that last name was fundamental for her, because her mother was the pillar of her formation before an absent father. When she was called by her first and last name, she jumped to say after Valdivieso, Florido.

She came into my life when I was going through a very difficult time economically, but also emotionally. She was a professor at the Social Communication school I was attending, and from which she belonged to the staff of scholarship holders from the annexed Audiovisual Department.

So we met while I was working to pay for my studies, with the surprise that, the following year, I have her as a teacher in the subject of audiovisual reporting. She was a producer, because her face and name were not known to the viewers, unless they read the credits of the programs, which almost nobody does.

But yes, she was an excellent producer, one of those tough ones, who doesn't stop until she gets what she wants. For me, she became the model of what I wanted to be "when I grew up", because after graduating, we started out small in the work field.

quiero_ser

She chose me, adopted me as her daughter (although she personally had no offspring) just as she did every year with her year group. She taught me the tricks of the trade, gave me advice as a friend, as a mother and as a producer. In her I found the oasis I needed to recover emotionally.

I remember that once, when she saw me down, she told me: you must believe your own story! No one will believe you if you don't believe it yourself. Another of her phrases to me was: It can't be that I love you more than you love yourself. It killed me every time she said them. It was like direct punches to the soul, a kind of CPR she used to make me react and change the chip implanted by my biological mother.

flor

She was intuitive, like any good producer. Just as sailors know the direction of the wind when they raise their finger, with a glance she could grasp even the most hidden mystery in the people she was interested in.

She knew how to compensate for her short stature, she was less than six feet tall, but in that small body she accumulated so much love and dedication to what she did, whether it was TV, teaching, or in her personal life. She got to be married, but as she herself said: "that was not for me, I got tired and said goodbye". She dedicated herself to cultivate herself in other things and to look for love in other facets.

divorce

Those who had the pleasure of meeting her were simply captivated by her charisma and her gift for people. Once we graduated, we drifted apart a bit, although from time to time we would write emails or I would call her to check in, like a good daughter. And when I was late in doing so, of course the complaint would come: Girl, don't get lost for so long!

When I was shooting my first movie, coincidentally we were close to her house, so I called her, to see if she was there and we could at least have a coffee, with the luck that she was there, and that the director of the movie also knew her.

cafe

That brake was really nice, as I had not seen her in person for many years. The hugs were short before the emotion I felt when I saw my adoptive mother again, the one who chose me and lulled me in the middle of my crisis.

Not much time had passed since then, when a friend of mine, whose daughter was studying at the same university I graduated from, called me to tell me the terrible news.

Laura had passed away

I burst into tears immediately. I felt like a piece of me had vanished. I barely managed to write down the time and place where her remains would be laid to rest, so I could go to say goodbye to her.

I am not one for mourning, so I dressed in black to go, I went with the director of the film with whom we had coffee a year ago.

The cemetery was bursting at the seams, as if it were a star. There were boxes of the brand of cigarettes she liked left over, as a hope that she would never lack them in the afterlife. At the end of the service, the wife of her family doctor told us: Laura died of meningitis (a viral affection that attacks the meninges that cover the brain), that was why she fainted at home, and since she lived alone, there was no one to take her to a medical center.

funeral

From then on, there were many tributes in her name, I even found a blog, which was eventually abandoned. That was almost 20 years ago, and her mark in the university has remained a bit in the corner of memories.

When it was my turn to start my life in teaching, my role model was her, who without having studied was one of the best teachers I have ever had. I tried to be and do what she would have done in that case. It was a challenge to try to match her.

And in each new challenge, I repeat her words to myself, they are the ones that bring me the cable to ground, she is my conscience in spite of her physical absence, she is my chosen mother, my friend who from wherever she is continues to illuminate my dark days.

They say that people die when they pass into oblivion, but in my case Laura continues to live through me, at least for a few more years.
