#freewrite :: Prompt for Day 1447: morning hike

"Bang, bang, bang!" Who on earth was banging the door? Goodness! Weren't we all suppose to be in bed? "Get up y'all! It is time!" I was awaken by someone yelling. Whaaa....tt? I rubbed my eyes and slowly opened them, squinting as someone turned on the lights.

Then, I remembered, we were at a rest house, a little over three thousand metres above sea level and we were supposed to continue our hike to the peak of the mountain.

We hiked the whole day yesterday from the park to this rest house. It was a beautiful hike from nine in the morning until about three in the evening. We saw how the forest changed from lushes big and green trees to a more barren forest, mostly pine trees as the weather grew colder. It was a tiring hike yesterday but the real journey was just about to start this early morning.

We got ready and gathered at the meeting point to meet with our hike guide to start this early morning hike at two in the morning. Yes, it started at two in the morning just so that we could catch the sunrise by five.

The headlamps were our guide in the pitch darkness of the forest as we followed our guide. There were occasional ropes stationed at certain spots to help us climb the higher slopes. The wee hours of the morning brought with it cold breeze that gave us shivers even in our thick clothings.

The hike was slow as the air grew thinner. I could feel my breath getting shorter and I needed to rest more often as we got hiked further up. There were no more trees in sight, not even a pine tree and it was cold hard rocks everywhere as the dawn approaches.

We watched our steps as the slopes became steeper and at several spots, the guide happily told us that people fell and died there. We could only looked at each other with disbelief and pray that we did not end up with the same fate.

After almost three hours of walking and climbing, the guide finally pointed to us where the peak was. It was so near yet so far as each of us hiked slowly up, catching our every breath, towards that spot.

At that point, we no longer cared about the sunrise. All we wanted was to finish the journey, to reach the peak. We finally rejoiced as we did, just as we felt the welcoming heat from the sunrise.
