#freewrite #weekend :: Single Prompt Option: street sweeper

"Do you see the street sweeper every morning, collecting withered leaves and rubbish, all the way into the afternoon everyday, under the scorching hot sun? Study hard or you will end up like them." Those were the words of my teacher who taught us Maths when we were sixteen. It was his way to motivate us to study instead of wasting our lives away and ending up as a street sweeper.

Back then, we just nodded our heads as our teacher said those words. We knew that we didn't want to end up as a street sweeper and most of us studied the best we could. Some of us did well in exams, while some mediocrely but each one of us moved on with our lives.

Today, as we have lived on this earth for a number of years, having seen and experienced a number of things in life plus watched many days and years of news on television, I realized now that I disagree with the statement made by my teacher back then.

It was a realization that not everyone has the same opportunity for education or job and for an individual to be sweeping the streets as part of their job, it may not necessarily be because he or she was lazy or didn't study hard enough.

Poverty, problems at home, in more serious cases - war and many circumstances can lead to lack of opportunity in education or job. It may not be the fault of a child who had to earn a living by becoming a street sweeper because of this. Is it fair then to say the statement? I personally do not think so now. It may serve as a negative motivating statement but today, I do not appreciate the statement.

Fantastic thoughts about street sweepers @marblely, here in Sweden I don't think we have manual street sweepers anymore, and not for a long while, but machines instead with drivers, and not poorly paid either.

But that was a bit besides your point I think, the fact that some jobs are seen as a failure of the individual for having to reside to such a job, and you are right it should not be looked down upon, I know several people who are driving those street sweeping machines out of their own choice.

Have an amazing new week ahead and stay awesome.

This is a beautiful insight @marblely. Thank you for sharing your thoughts :)

BTW, how do you get your writing to be centred in the middle? I do my posts via ecency and I haven't managed to work this out!
