In November 1988, I was hired as a salesman at La Salle Optical Center, located in Comercio de Guarenas Street, Plaza Municipality, Miranda State, Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. The experience acquired helped me to train as a technician in the assembly of optical lenses, repair and maintenance of frames, also, I learned to read ophthalmologic prescriptions and interpret the nomenclature used in some cases (OD: Right Eye / OI: Left Eye / AO: Both eyes / ADD: Addition for Presbytes / ESF: Sphere / CIL: Cylinder / VL: Far Vision / VI: Intermediate Vision / VP: Near Vision / AV: Visual Acuity... among other symbols). ... among other symbols) in short, I learned many things: each of the parts of the lenses, types of lenses, products and even specific medications for each of the pathologies. Today I know what myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia and astigmatism are, I know what the characteristics of each one are and what kind of lenses should be used in each case.

One of the pathologies I learned about at that time was Glaucoma: group of eye diseases that can cause vision loss and blindness by damaging the nerve located at the back of the eye, known as the optic nerve. and I learned about this disease because my boss, the owner of the Optical, had to be aware of her eye pressure and for that she used a device called Tonometers that measures the intraocular pressure exerted by the liquids inside the eye, the vitreous humor and aqueous humor, which when altering its value can cause irreversible damage to vision. My boss, who was not an ophthalmologist but an optometrist, went regularly to her trusted doctor who prescribed drops to lower the pressure in the eye to prevent damage to the optic nerve.

Today, World Glaucoma Day, I want to encourage my readers to visit their trusted ophthalmologist at least once a year, I remind you that Glaucoma does not warn and, so far, there is no way to prevent this disease. Do not forget that sight is the main window to the soul, therefore, we have to protect our eyes, especially from the intense light of cell phones and the flashes of computers and electronic devices, intense light is fatal.
