Cuando era niña íbamos con mi papá y mi abuela al pueblo cercano. Mientras mi padre hacía las compras, mi abuela y yo esperábamos en el carro viendo pasar personas, observando la astucia de los vendedores y dando una que otra mirada a la plazoleta que está justo frente al mercado.
When I was a child we would go with my dad and grandmother to the nearby town. While my father shopped, my grandmother and I would wait in the car watching people go by, observing the cunning of the vendors and giving the occasional glance at the small square right in front of the market.
Niños, adultos y jóvenes iban de lado a lado en medio del ajetreo de los sábados por la mañana. Unos mostraban sus sonrisas de vez en cuando, otros iban frunciendo el ceño cual situación inaceptable enfrentaban. Pero lo que más me llamaba la atención era una pequeña que acompañaba a quienes parecían sus padres en uno de los puestos de ropa adyacente a la acera lateral del mercado
Children, adults and youngsters were going from side to side amidst the hustle and bustle of Saturday mornings. Some were showing their smiles from time to time, others were frowning at whatever unacceptable situation they were facing. But what caught my attention the most was a little girl accompanying what looked like her parents at one of the clothing stalls adjacent to the sidewalk at the side of the market.
Se trataba de una simpática persona, de tez blanca y cabellera rubia, muy dinámica y cariñosa, que de vez en cuando le jugaba alguna broma a los vecinos del área comercial.
Para mí ella era una persona en miniatura. Era la primera vez que veía a alguien como ella y eso me impresionó un poco... Cómo cualquier niña me llamo la atención del por qué ella era así. No era como sus padres. Ella era de estatura corta.
She was a nice person, with a white complexion and blonde hair, very dynamic and affectionate, who from time to time played a joke on the neighbors in the commercial area. To me she was a miniature person. It was the first time I saw someone like her and that impressed me a little.... Like any little girl I was struck by why she was like that. She was not like her parents. She was short in stature.
Me parecía, entonces, que esta niña enfrentaba todo lo contrario a mi. Y, es que, en la escuela primaria, yo solía ir de última en la fila, pues mi talla se destacaba entre los demás niños, aunque era delgada. "Es una niña muy alta", decían algunos. Por ende, siempre tuve que enfrentar eso de ser más alto: ir de último en la fila y ser discriminada en algunos juegos con otros compañeros porque era una niña "grande".
It seemed to me, then, that this girl faced the opposite of me. In elementary school, I used to be last in line, because my size stood out among the other children, even though I was thin. "She's a very tall girl," some would say. So, I always had to deal with being taller: going last in line and being discriminated against in some games with other classmates because I was a "big" girl.
Pues bien, si pudiera cambiar de cuerpo con el de otra persona, me gustaría cambiar ese rol al extremo y ocupar el cuerpo de aquella persona que me impresionó para entonces, con el cuerpo de la niña simpática y pequeña. ¿Que se sentirá vivir en un mundo ideado exclusivamente para personas de "estatura normal"?
Well, if I could change my body with someone else's, I would like to change that role to the extreme and take the body of that person who impressed me at that time, with the body of the nice and small girl. What would it feel like to live in a world designed exclusively for people of "normal height"?
Desde objetos tan simples como una silla hasta otros más complejos, han sido diseñados para personas de tamaño estándar... Pero, ¿qué queda para quienes son diferentes y únicos?
From objects as simple as a chair to more complex ones, they have been designed for people of standard size? But what is left for those who are different and unique?
¿Qué se siente tener que impulsarse con la fuerza de sus brazos hasta poder alcanzar el asiento y lograr sentarse?, por ejemplo. O ¿cómo subir en el transporte público y deslizarse entre los demás cuál niño buscando espacio para ir cómodo? Quizá no sea tan fácil ir sobre un asiento sumamente alto, con las piernas colgando e inquietas con el vaivén del desplazamiento, ni tampoco lo sea experimentar esas frenadas inoportunas del chófer cuando apenas da tiempo para alargar los cortos brazos hacia el puesto de adelante para evitar caer.
How does it feel to have to push yourself with the strength of your arms to reach the seat and be able to sit down, for example? Or how do you get on public transportation and slip through the crowd like a child looking for space to get comfortable? Perhaps it is not so easy to ride on a very high seat, with your legs dangling and fidgeting with the swaying of the ride, nor is it so easy to experience those inopportune braking manoeuvres of the driver when you barely have time to stretch your short arms towards the seat in front of you to avoid falling down.
Quizá lo más interesante sea aprender a ver el mundo desde otra perspectiva, en medio de la multitud de personas más grandes... Lo más interesante consiste en aprender a ser más comprensivos.
Perhaps the most interesting thing is to learn to see the world from a different perspective, in the midst of the crowd of bigger people... The most interesting thing is to learn to be more understanding.

I am a short person and I often find myself thinking... If I only was a LITTLE taller I could reach that 😜
I think the word Normal changes depending on Who you ask, and I think normal includes us al only in different ways as we all are Created differently.
