The Kingfisher - Qurator's Photo Quest | Birds

IMG_20221121_185252.jpg

Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), Sweden

This charming bird belongs to the only kingfisher species that breeds in Europe. They are also known as the "River Kingfishers" as they are exclusively found at fresh or brackish habitats. As their name suggests, their prey mostly consists of fish but also other aquatic insects. They nest in burrows that they excavate themselves and can reach up to 3 meters long!

Their long and pointed beak limits water disruption when they dive to catch their prey.

This is my entry to the weekly photography contest made possible by @qurator (@scrooger , @ewkaw , @ackhoo , @brumest -- many thanks folks!)

Thank you for the visit :)

Hi @malos10 ! Yes indeed , it's a stunning bird , one of my favorite species. Not easy to get a glimpse of one as they're very silent and inconspicuous

Excellent photographic captures of this Kingfisher bird, your one up North is exceptionally pretty in green/russet colouring compared to the many we get down South.

Hi @joanstewart ! Thanks a lot for your comment, I'm glad you liked the shots. Indeed the colors of the kingfisher's plumage are mesmerizing! I suppose by down South you refer to Africa?
