Los matices de la culpa | The nuances of guilt

Saludos apreciada comunidad Holos&Lotus, bienvenidos a mi blog.

Greetings, dear Holos&Lotus community, welcome to my blog. Our friend @charjaim invites us to a new topic: The Nuances of Guilt, Initiative #41 in her column, That Life of Ours.

Guilt is a very complex and heavy feeling that invades our minds, clinging to us and reminding us that we have acted inappropriately, whether because we truly failed, because we reproach ourselves for past behavior, or simply because we didn't meet the expectations of others. I believe we live with this feeling from a very young age when we commit some mischief and, through our actions, damage something or someone. When our caregiver scolds or corrects us, guilt instantly becomes a part of our lives, associated with our mistakes, missteps, failures, and stumbles. Every time we do something wrong, guilt makes its presence felt, sitting in our minds, judging our conscience and filling us with insecurities and remorse.

I remember when I was very young, I wanted to teach my younger cousin to ride a bike. Because of my persistence, I got her to ride. I let go, thinking she was ready, but it turned out she wasn't. She fell and hurt her knees and arms. I received a lot of scolding from several adults, including my aunt with whom we lived. This episode echoed in our house and in my mind for a long time. Every time I made a mistake, my cousin and the bike would come back to me. It was the same with everything bad that happened around me; I was always to blame. There was always someone pointing the finger at me, and even if it wasn't my responsibility, I ended up accepting it. I never defended myself, even knowing that at that moment I had nothing to do with it.
So I grew up with guilt on my side, where many times I didn't need witnesses or judges, just my own mind. And I was the first to reproach and attack myself with extreme severity, showing no compassion for myself. I was very humane and compassionate towards others, but I didn't apply the saying "Charity begins at home" to my own mistakes. You get used to feeling guilty even for something that isn't harmful, like setting boundaries, saying no, not being able to help someone at that precise moment, or expressing your feelings and making someone uncomfortable.

After a long time, I've been able to look at myself with more compassion, to understand that as a human being I can make many mistakes, to know when it is or isn't my responsibility in any act or action committed without waiting for someone to point the finger, taking only what is mine to bear, such as learning from my mistakes, growing as a person, and resolving or repairing my shortcomings. Guilt is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it makes you see what you've done right or wrong; on the other hand, it diminishes you, makes you feel less than you truly are. You live with the certainty that you always owe something, that you're not enough or don't do enough. The best thing we can do with it is not to let it become a permanent fixture in our lives, to listen less to external voices, more to ourselves, so we can live in the present and move forward with greater peace.
