It snowed properly last weekend. Now the skiing trails are in great condition again.

Taken from my car when on my way home.

In the recent decade or two, winters have become noticeable less snowy than before. As a result, many mass events like Finlandia Hiihto or Pirkan Hiihto have been scaled down or canceled altogether.

There used to be a 75-km long trail from Hämeenlinna to Lahti made for Finlandia Hiihto. That has proved unfeasible in the last couple of decades. As a result the event is still organized but only in Lahti.

Pirkan Hiihto will be organized on March 5. Weather conditions permitting, the route will be from Niinisalo garrison to Tampere the distance being 90 km. I've completed it in the year 2002. I was in much better shape than now. Although only had a 100 km or so total kilometers under my belt for that winter, I had been going to the gym and doing cardio the whole year. We had arrived in Niinisalo on Saturday evening and slept in a school near the garrison. The start for amateurs was at 7 am. My time was 10 hours 30 minutes. The longest break I took was lunch around noon. The longest I went on without stopping was probably something like 20 km. The last 10 km were not the hardest but the 10 km before the last. When I arrived at the last stop 10 km before finish, I decided to soldier on regardless of the fact that I was quite tired. My father picked my up from the racetrack in the northwest of the city where the finish was. At home, I took a shower, had dinner, went to bed and fell asleep almost immediately. Woke up in the morning.
